Two weeks ago, Mizuno unveiled the JPX 921 line of irons and if you missed our preview, check it out here. Over the last two weeks, we have been busy in the THP Tech Studio putting each of the four sets to the test.
The lineup consists of the Hot Metal, Hot Metal Pro, Forged and Tour. We wanted to not only tell you about the results, but show you the testing and talk you through some swings.
In the video below, we take each set for a test drive and talk a little bit about the tech, but go a step further and compare all four to each other in the wrap up with all of the data.
After watching the swings and hearing about the clubs, which set do you think fits best for your game?
The Details
In Stores: 9/17/2020
Cost: $1000-$1400 depending on set
My $.02 – I bet it’s swing dependent. And by his description of being steeper, makes sense that JB would be fine with the HM sole.
I took this picture yesterday. I think people are assuming huge sole differences.

Yeah that’s really minor. Thx for sharing
Why are you holding the same club three times?
More of his stop-motion magic.
Having a mat phobia and hitting the clubs 10 or more yds shorter than the distances I laser all the time is always vexing. Hard to deny the numbers, but I still find it odd.
We must be polar opposites. My handicap would be like 10 shots better off mats. Can’t miss a shot off them haha.
I have done many fittings off mats and never had a good experience, I think with my ott and evidently shallow swing I just can’t make good contact. Off grass I will take a normal divot with the 7-wedges on a decent swing, but have some mental block about hitting down on a mat.
Its a perfect lie, maybe a bit thin depending on the mat but perfect. Could be I just suck and even when I fully intended to try and buy a better game could not justify it and I am pretty easy to convince.
PGA Superstore had the heads today(well not the Forged), so I got a great look at the Tour, HM, and HMP. Addtionally they had a full set of the 919 Forged on the rack.
I’m 90% sure(pending hitting them), I’m getting the HMP up and down the set. It looks great, pretty much what I like to see. Very similiar with the 919 Forged to my eye, with a little more offset added.
VERY glad the HMP fit my eye, as: #1) it’s $400 cheaper than the Forged, and #2) If I had to go Forged to get the look, that brought the PXG Gen3’s into play for me.
Today was a good day, now to got hit them, and think about shafts….I have not seen much posted here on the shafts, any thoughts on the Project X LZ that come with them? The flex(5.5) is about perfect for me).
I was initially disappointed in these graphs until I noticed you can select each iron of the set to compare specs against the other models.
I love that I can have complete confidence that moving the ball is a real possibility on every shot. Where I generally lean on a straight flight or whatever is trending on the day, I stepped up on the second par three with the pin tucked hard right, which means bunkers are short and right and a draw into the pin simply isn’t a real option. Grabbed six iron, played it to fade off a line about 10 yards left of the pin, and hit a shot that was loaded with great feedback. Slight fade, just like the doctor ordered, and converted my 12 footer for a birdie.
It’s good and it’s bad though – I hit two shots late in the round that worked more than I wanted to (read: didn’t stay straight lol) and cost me a couple strokes. All that’s really occurring here, is that i am not getting away with bad (or less than great) shots, and that’s always a tough pill to swallow… but I think expectations on a product like this, with the presentation that it provides, shouldn’t be about forgiveness, should it?
I just keep circling back to sound/feedback. of all the things I could have asked them to improve for the 921 iteration of the JPX Tour, I would have put sound at the very top of the list – and I really think they did a nice job, from wedge to 4 iron.
It’s a great product that exceeded the sound expectations, and challenges you to hit a great strike on every swing – and when you do, you are rewarded in a big way.
Compared to what? I still haven’t seen the HMP
Good question….I suppose in my mind I’m comparing it to a players club profile. I dont pay much attention to SGI type category, but I assume it falls in that range.
Awesome to hear you felt this way. Definitely a great design and option
Glad to hear some store has a forged demon. It seems everyone has the Tour/HMP/HM bit no one has the forged for some reason. I’ve seen that several places and called my 4 stores here and same thing. Weird.
I agree with you here. I hit the HMP at GG the other day (they don’t have forged in yet) and was impressed. Way better looking than i had imagined. The price is certainly better as you mentioned. The Forged is what my mind was set on before seeing any of them. At the forged price and adding the custom ferules and Steelfibers, it does indeed bring the PXG 0311 Gen 3 in to play and I’ve hit those and we’re seriously impressed.
Someone trying to be helpful stealing your thunder?
Any toe misses to speak of? That’s always my biggest concern.
It’s not the best performer off the toe. I’ve said it in some earlier posts but the toe miss is probably the worst spot. Low or heel misses aren’t all that punishing.
the more I look at the lineup the more I lean towards the HMP. Seeing the heads in person, the HM looks really nice as well and isn’t massively different in size
Hardly. Simply pointing out that the info was already posted – including the image of the charts. Guess you were the only one not to see that.
And when I posted did I say that I didn’t see it. Maybe others missed it as well. Carry one moderating the forum. This response gave you more of my time that I feel you warranted. Have a good day.
Please don’t say things like that. Those are my misses. Hardly ever toe. I love my irons. I love my irons. I love my irons. There, fixed.
and my 90% getting the HMP just went to 96%………
Yeah, the toe miss is fine but I’ve definitely had clubs that retained speed out there better. It’s at least a half club reduction
Really different irons. One sounds really really good. The other is the p790 ?
As luck would have it, I’ve played both for several rounds this year. What are you looking to find out?
Looks, feel/sound, distance differences?
Looks are incredibly subjective and there are a lot of photos of each out there. I think both look good and they have small profiles, just are a bit different. You won’t feel like you are playing a shovel with either. The feel/sound goes to the 921F and it isn’t close, particularly off the the short irons. I Never minded the feel of the the 790s but they are far harsher than the 921F. But the opposite is true on the distance front. I’m seeing similar distances but the 921F are a yard or two shorter for me (it could be the shaft at that point – I wasn’t fit into them). But what they are giving up in a few yards has seen a consistency increase for carry distance and I haven’t seen any hollow-body missiles from the rough.
I think it really comes down to which design to do you want and what you are looking for from the iron because both a really good.
When I saw the design differences in the forged from the 919, you could see they weren’t giving as much toe help this year. My miss is toe but I know why – it’s a hangover from my Hank Haney swing where you were told to swing to the right – that big in to out swing.
When I began with a new instructor about four years ago, he asked why I was holding my trail shoulder back. He said, "Don’t". Just sequence. ie. lower body opens, upper body does its thing. So whenever I toe a shot, I know that I held my upper body back. I work a lot on opening up and swinging left. The toe miss is actually fairly easy to get rid of – just relax your upper body and put it into the shot in sequence.
The P7MC also have me impressed, but since I already have the T100S irons, I kinda want a fun/forgiving setup to mess with.
Thinking 921 forged 4-PW, $-Taper X, SSx2, Z-Cord Align……sounds naughty…
Maybe get really dirty and order a HMP 4 iron with a light weight shaft setup….
How did the forged compare to your T100s?
I hit the forged today and really really liked them. The only issue is they reminded me exactly of what i have now. Looks, feel wise. Now I’ll have to go back and try them head to head vs mine.
Talk dirty to me.
I don’t know what Golf Shake is, but I don’t agree. I think we kind of showed that in the video with @Canadan and I have seen similar. From the larger sole to a bit more mass in areas most should see more help with forgiveness
