While there is no doubt Mizuno is still an iron company in the eyes of many, that is absolutely selling them short in what their last two release cycles have been. In fact, them choosing the hashtag #ReachBeyond is perfection for what they have been bringing to market in every club in their lineup.
Look no further to see that than the buzz which their ST-X and ST-Z drivers generated earlier this year, two clubs that offered two diverse options for golfers with flat out performance. But, for many the immediate question was, “What happened to the G?”.
Well, you have your answer. The ST-G 220 driver is here, and it takes adjustability and versatility to the max.
Mizuno ST-G 220 Driver
The “G” driver has honestly been ahead of its time for many iterations now when it came to overall adjustability, but for many it lacked firepower. Mizuno believes they have fixed that in a big way.
Before we get too deep introducing the newest member of the ST 220 driver family, it needs to be pointed out that though it may look similar to previous versions, there has been a lot of tweaking done to create a driver that to some extent situates itself right in the middle of the current lineup. This is important because it could very well give Mizuno the deepest lineup of drivers from top to bottom when it comes to fitting.
Obviously, the tracks and moving weights are here with the ST-G 220, but Mizuno has once again tweaked their location to try and optimize the overall fitting and performance capabilities of the head. The biggest part of that was shortening the lateral tracks while shifting their locations. What this did was allow for a third weight location as low/back in the center as possible that really allows an effect on the CG of the head to be had. When all three tracks are viewed in their totality of options, Mizuno believes they have now created a unicorn of sorts that will allow for spin and fade/draw bias to be adjusted. Most drivers are aimed at one of those things, the ST-G 220 is looking to do it all.
More than the external adjustable weighting, the shape itself is one that will appeal to many with a 460cc body that is shorter from front to back but with a deeper face than many. Internally, much has been done to help create an extremely balanced framework that offers good MOI and overall forgiveness compared to previous versions. Obviously, those can both be impacted by the chosen location of the weights in the tracks. The company is also adamant they have kept the same focus on sound which was much lauded in the ST-Z and ST-X so that despite all the adjustability, it is still an appealing head acoustically.
The big story though, is how Mizuno believes they have stepped up the power which the ST-G offers to make it a true contender not just for amateurs but also among their Tour staff. By implementing the same SAT2041 Beta Ti which is a Super Alloy Titanium that gives 17% more tensile strength and 8% more flexibility than the previous face material Mizuno was using in their drivers. The thing here is we know that it’s real and not just marketing because of the feedback and testing that have been done on the ST-Z and ST-X drivers already. Add in the new and improved Wave Sole and you have the recipe for ball speed potential, but more importantly, a maximization of energy retention and transfer across the face.
The ST-G 220 will hit retail in October 2021 and carry with it a $499.95 price tag. Several THP’ers have already had the ST-G 220 in hand for an extended period now with their initial feedback on the THP Community with much more to come! Jump in and let us know what you think!
Have you measured or seen changes when you move the weights front to back in that area?
I did try it and made a little difference. I think there is a shaft change needed and actually already in progress as well. I think that will make some difference.
Mostly it is my fault. I am always on the low side. This is just a bit too low.. I also probably should have gone with a 10.5 head.
Agree.
I went with a lighter, higher launching shaft to generate more spin and speed (I have the need) while leaving loft at 9 degrees. My AOA is about +6, so that helps. I am going to attempt to get more data on Friday during a lesson.
It might be the no-sleep talking. I reserve the right to alter my opinion next year. Calendar year. And it’s September.
I don’t necessarily it is about improvement but rather fitting. X and Z offer one that is a bit draw biased snd one that is a bit fade biased. This one has max adjustability to fine tune.
I like this head, huge ball speed and feels great. But honestly it is too low spin for me. Its an absolute cannon when I can get it airborne. If there was a 10.5 it would be a beast.
It’s SO low. I was seeing 1600 today.
I have seen the same. For many this could be a godsend. for me, its neck high bullets.. haha.
DUDE. Remember when I was hitting it at HQ? I had to switch heads because it was so low
Just think about me and my 96 SS…
I placed both weights in the High MOI position and have a high launch shaft but would like more spin.
I hope they do. I will swap out for that and hit some “don’t be nasty” bombs!!
The next question is "Will a light, softer tip work?" Well, it’s in there already – Fuji Atmos 5 R flex. Possibly going to 45.5 inches may help loosen the spin up.
This is a great candidate for the Auto-Flex Shaft.
But I keep on thinking TPT Golf Shafts – because I swing them, they have no flex rating, you can go softer and lighter in them – it’s what fits. But they are costly.
G220 – it is an excellent driver with a fit shaft for you. Perhaps a third weight for more swing weight to loosen up the shaft and get it to D4-5.
Perhaps, I’ll give a look to the new X driver next year, but for now the current ST-X has a secure spot in the top of my bag.
ST-X is a BEAST!
Yup, I’m thinking it’s not me either haha
It was LOW. It’s fast as hell, but man it’s low spin.
Performance wise, just like the previous 2 G series, this was super low spin. I hit 13 launch and sub 2000 spin over and over. For my offseason swing I was very impressed with the speed also. I didnt get to play around with all the weights but properly fitted I think this would be a very tough driver to beat head to head
i think the sound is good. Maybe try it outside.
PS I’m deaf if I can determine the difference inside/outside you can too.
Sounds good outside. In cold weather, it sounds even better in my experience. It is a low spinner.
Looks like the G still beats it out:
That’s the old Z….and I can say having done that comparison as well, the G is still lower launching and spinning than the Z. The G might be the lowest spinning and launching head I tested this year.
i will validate this statement.
From what I’m seeing, I second this. I may have to put the weights in the back or loft it up. I’m still not quite sure what I just said outloud.
You are typically a very high ball hitter are you not?
I had to do both, and it was still not quite enough. But on the nuts, filthy long.
I am, yes. For me, this thing is like hitting wind cheaters. In current neutral mid flight setup at 9 degrees, I wouldn’t at all be surprised if I was launching 8-10 degrees on a normal swing. Normal for me was 13-16.
I’m playing next Thursday, but I’ll charge up my BLP and hit a few balls with it on Wednesday or so and see if I can do a bit of fine tuning. Or aggressive tuning. I’m aiming for like 12-14 launch and something in the low to mid 2000’s for spin.
To back up what @Jman said, this thing is pretty filthy when you catch it. It does for me have a fade bias, so that’s not a bad thing. My course doesn’t super punish you with a fade on most holes. You fight the doglegs a bit, and on one hole in particular, a hard miss right is having you rattle around in the trees.
I like the level of adjustability and Golfworx are doing a deal with this and the ST-Z 3W for just over $510 which is a great price for two clubs.
Hoping to see my swing and distance improve a bit this year too so the adjustability makes sense from that perspective too.
510 for both total? That’s a hell of a deal.
As far as low spinning, yeah this needs to be lofted up and start from there. I’ve not often found a driver head where I need to loft up because I’m having trouble getting it up in the air. Thats actually pretty cool, honestly.
I think it depends on your swing speed, and based on the numbers you provided, I assume you are in the high 80s, low 90s. Because I was getting similar numbers. I preface the following by saying I love the feel of the club and it’s fun to swing. I have 3 shafts for it, one is mid launch, one is mid- hi and the last is high. I got the most distance from the high launch shaft. But still most drives were in the 220-230 zone. So, to sum up, I do not think you will get the laugh or spin you need to increase distance. I think one needs a faster swing and consistent launch angles. I did find when I worked on launch I could move the weights to the sides and get a bit more distance, but still inconsistent – probably due to the low spin.
Hope that helps.
It’s not a deal if it does not work for you.
Based on how you described your swing, I’d say no, you will not get extra yardage with it. It is low spin, to get some spin, you’d have to hit down on that driver and then the ball would not launch and because it’s low spin it would still be low and not spin. Nowheresville.
It only comes in 9 deg. It’s a good driver for high speed, high launch players who would probably need to play a different shaft than their usual.
Find something else. I think the 2020 fairways also need more speed to make them work – especially a 3 wd. They are excellent fairways, but a heavier feel, lots of cc’s but you need more than a 85-95 driver swingspeed to get them to go.
Look at my bag – those fairways are a good deal if you can find them for less than high-speed players – they go, have less cc’s so very playable, a light feel. Or Callaway or other OEM’s.
I love Mizuno but I think that I need more speed to have their STG and current fwy work for me.
No I made a mistake! It’s $770
Cheers JW.
Cheers Des. Wasn’t looking for more distance with it, just not losing any due to the spin.
If it does not spin, it won’t help you get yardage at our swingspeed – 88-96.
Even the high-speed guys like @Jman and @templeton80 posting above have difficulty spinning it. That’s not good news for the slower speed guys.
My AOA is +6. I like the feel, like the look, but I want more yards. I go Callaway or Ping and not Cobra, Titleist or others only because I don’t have time to try everything.
No too late, quoted 510. I look forward to this purchase.
I’ll keep looking at the ST-X I think.
Do not discount the Z – I hit it expecting it to not work – it worked really really well for me – I was not getting a massive distance jump, but accuracy improved. It was mostly point and shoot, and that was with a random shaft. The X was a bit more left than I expected as well – or maybe I had a good swing that day. For those reasons, I am going to hit the new X and Z when I am able to swing them again 2-4 weeks out (I hope).
