For as much focus as golfers give Mizuno for their iron lineups, their wedge game has always been quite strong. That said, they don’t always garner the attention that others do, but the company hopes to change that with their new T22 wedges.
Mizuno T22 Wedges
The T20 was a highly thought of wedge release for Mizuno, one that offered some fun finishes and a decent amount of tech within a sleek forging. But there has seemingly always been a chase for the company in their wedges when it comes to the shape and flow, with the T22 they are once again looking for refinement.
While the T20 was a good performer, visually it just lacked that “smoothness” which many expect from Mizuno. The way the toe sat, the flow into the hosel, the general shaping, these were all things that were good, but perhaps not great to Mizuno’s R&D team. So, what to do? Well, look to the past for inspiration.
Mizuno is looking at the T22 as a blend of the T20’s performance with the lines of potentially the most appealing wedge the company has ever made, the T7. By beveling the top edge, they believe the look is much more traditional in its shaping at setup while they were able to keep the tapered blade styling of the T20 that allowed so much weight manipulation.
So, what you get is a smaller overall footprint and a more compact profile with a classic teardrop shaping that looks like it has a very thin topline because of the way it is beveled. However, you still get the weighting of the T20 which according to Mizuno makes for a more consistent spinning and flatter trajectory.
The Mizuno T22 wedges are Grain Flow Forged using HD Boron and will come in three finishes, Denim Copper and Satin Chrome which will both feature a copper underlayer, and a Tour preferred Raw option. The wedges also showcase Mizuno’s proven laser etched HydroFlow Microgrooves to maximize performance in moisture while the Quad Cut grooves are specifically designed for how each loft is typically utilized.
As is customary for Mizuno, there will be loft options aplenty, especially if you go the custom fit route, and this year the grinds have been bolstered considerably with four specific designs:
S Grind – with minimal sole grind for fuller shots and lower lofts
D Grind – with moderate heel and toe relief, allowing gentle manipulation of the clubface
C Grind – with heavy heel and toe relief for more skilled players and firmer conditions
X Grind – with extreme heel and toe relief for the real short game maestros
Release for the T22 wedges will be October 2021 and will be available in RH and LH (Satin Chrome only) with a price of $159.95 each. For those who cannot wait for information and feedback, several of the THP community members have been sharing their feedback on the new wedges, so be sure to jump into the conversation and share your thoughts while reading theirs!
I kind of feel like with wedges and putters I don’t always need all that extra science. It’s a spot in the bag where if I could get away with missing out on that stuff, those are the two spots I would be able to do it.
The right fit of grind and shaft makes the difference, to me, in a wedge. Although the moisture dispersion in the Mizunos is there for more consistent spin.

I was wondering what happened there.
Lost it on round 40 or so I think
Happens, im not stressing it. Was no way I was finding it though in the grass
Not bad 40 rounds in. I don’t think I’d have even looked, or considered looking. Too small and life’s too short. Pop off the rest and it looks more uniform + rust!
Yup, they’re going to get that done, then a Coke bath and some stamping.
Looks impressive. I’d just wished they’d stamp loft on the toe side of the sole. That’s all I need.
Nice look forward to seeing the finished product, then you can do mine, thanks in advance! Kidding
Yeah I could do without the side numbers.
Yes, I don’t like fumbling through the bag – let me see the loft!!
Raw is beautiful!
They’re hard to see?
If you are wanting a C grind, and your store has them out on the shelves a little early, you should maybe run and get it like.. right friggin now. Just to be safe.
Keyword headweight. For builders, these are the weights of my 54/08D and 58/08C. Full threaded hosels.
For me, it’s easier to see it on the toe side of the sole. Not a big deal, just easier.
I’m gonna try a +4 on these. As soft as these wedges are, my hands are getting old and I like the feel of the cushion in that rubber.
Also – this is where dueling threads get annoying. I always feel like once the official one like this comes out replies should be closed for the old ones. Or merged or something. ?
I got shined by my chrome 54 today for the first time today. Had me thinking about the copper ones immediately. And some black shafts.
Precision instruments, that feel great. Bring on the new Mizuno irons!!!
Awesome
Pretty sure he was shopping this afternoon.
Same as the 54 and 58. Right around 302g. All same stock length.
Grabbed this today, bent it, and put it in play a couple times. They really are pretty great. So soft. A friend did struggle with it in the wet conditions though.
Struggle? Probably the bounce.
Probably needed to shallow it out and return the entire loft at impact so he uses all the bounce. Not uncommon with me to stick it in the wet when I forget to shallow out completely and then I drag the shaft forward even a little bit.
It absolutely was. It happens. Needed to be pretty exact in the conditions and everything here gets pretty grabby when it’s wet.
I used it a couple times greenside, which I don’t normally do, and was loving it.
Got my set finished re-shafting and gripping. Good excuse to use up old ferrules. Don’t love the look or even the chrome really, but they’ll go well with the 221.
And enjoyed the 50 again today.
I’m afraid to order/fit any of these without trying all of the grinds first? Seems like C may be the sweet spot for me.
Yeah, they held them from release. It sucks. The only ones of us that have them got them early, mostly from the Mizuno Event.
The C grind is pretty sweet if you like a C. I love it in my 58. Hopefully you’ll get to see and try one soon.
Best feeling wedges I’ve hit this year, and they’re super predictable for me, which I desperately need in my gap and sand wedges.
Ive beat them up a bit, but they’re still ticking.
X Grind is tempting. But I need more work so it doesn’t stick into the ground – The C Grind, which no one can buy until they settle the legal dispute over the words, C-Grind, is working well.
Im a max versatility guy in the 62 so it’s pretty sweet!
I can only tell you that I have played and traded in or sold Vokey Wedges to friends, but the Mizuno T22 are keepers.
Awesome to hear. I had sm4’s or 5’s before but don’t recall however I traded them in after 6 months or so. I’m sure the sm8’s has improved but since I’ve never had Mizuno wedges before, I’d thought this would be perfect time to give it a shot. Also the denim copper, I couldn’t resist haha.
I think you’re going to really be impressed by them.
For me, they are softer, smaller, more playable.
I play the D Grind in the 54 and like it – just less aggressive grinding than the C Grind.
