Between darker iron finishes, raw wedges, and more custom builds, golfers are paying closer attention to how everything in their golf club comes together visually. Nippon Shaft is addressing that with a new Luxury Black finish across parts of the MODUS³ lineup. We have been long time fans of Nippon, and when we first caught sight of this new finish at the 2026 PGA Show we immediately knew we needed to bring it to your attention.
While differently colored iron shafts aren’t a new thing, Luxury Black isn’t a painted finish. Nippon is using a plating process that bonds the color to the surface of the shaft rather than applying it on top. The goal is a deeper black tone that appears premium while also providing better resistance to wear compared to traditional coatings.

In hand, the difference is noticeable. The finish has more depth than most black shafts and avoids the overly glossy or flat look that can come with other options. It sits somewhere in between, with just enough sheen to catch light without creating glare. The company, version, and flex labeling are all in a glossier finish that manages to make them nondescript unless you view them in the right lighting angle.
The Finish – Nippon Luxury Black
Pictures are one thing, but Luxury Black is one of those things you just need to see in person to fully appreciate.

There’s no unevenness or variation in tone, aside from the aforementioned labeling. From grip to tip, the color stays consistent, and the graphics are subdued in a way that fits the overall look. The Luxury Black matte finish also has the side benefit of making the “unsheathed sword” sound when you pull it from the bag. There are a few other shafts like this on the market and it always tickles us when he hear it.
Compared to painted black shafts, you definitely get a sense that Luxury Black is more durable. There’s a hardness to the surface that you don’t typically get with coatings, which should help with bag chatter over time. That has been one of the main drawbacks with darker shafts in the past. If you look at the butt end (without a grip), you’ll see where the shafts transition from plated to unplated, and it becomes obvious that there was a well thought out process here.

When we address the ball with shafts like this, the darker tone changes what is seen. Chrome can reflect a lot of light, especially in bright conditions. This cuts that down and gives a slightly softer look behind the ball, with the shaft almost seeming to disappear from view at times.
Why It’s Being Offered
According to Nippon, the shift toward darker finishes in irons and wedges has created a mismatch with traditional chrome shafts.
For players building out a set with black or raw heads, this gives them an option that keeps everything consistent. Rather than changing performance, Luxury Black is a way to impart customization that finishes your build.
We’ve seen increasing growth in customization over the years. Golfers are more willing to make aesthetic decisions alongside fitting decisions, and this fits into that trend without requiring any change in how the shaft performs.
MODUS³ Tour 105
The Tour 105 is one of the most widely used shafts in the MODUS³ lineup.

At roughly 105 grams, it offers a lighter option that still maintains stability through the swing. The profile is designed for a mid launch with controlled spin, making it a fit for a wide range of players.
It’s often the starting point for golfers moving into MODUS³. The feel is smooth, and it doesn’t require a major adjustment from other lightweight steel options. For players looking to maintain speed while tightening dispersion, it’s an easy transition.
MODUS³ Tour 120
The Tour 120 moves into a heavier category and is built for players who want a more stable, controlled flight.

Weights fall into the low-120 gram range depending on flex. The profile features a softer mid-section with a firmer tip, which helps produce a more penetrating trajectory.
It suits players with a more aggressive transition who want to keep launch and spin from getting too high. Compared to the 105, it feels more solid throughout the swing without losing the smoothness Nippon is known for.
MODUS³ Wedge Shafts
Nippon approaches wedge shafts differently than most.
Rather than simply extending iron shafts into scoring clubs, the MODUS³ wedge series is designed specifically for those shots. The focus is on trajectory control, spin consistency, and feel on partial swings.
The lineup includes multiple weight options, typically 105, 115, and 125 grams. That allows players to match or slightly increase weight relative to their iron shafts depending on preference.
As a general guideline, players using the 105 in their irons may stay in that range or move slightly heavier. Those playing the 120 often pair with the 115 or 125, depending on how they approach their wedge setup. Golfers who rely more on full swings may stay closer to their iron shaft, while those focused on feel around the greens may prefer a heavier option.
More Models Likely
The initial release includes the 105, 120, and wedge shafts, but as you likely know, the MODUS³ lineup is much deeper than that.

It would not be surprising to see additional models added over time. The finish itself is likely going to be popular in the aftermarket, and we hope to see Nippon expand it across more profiles to give players more flexibility without changing what they are already fit into.
Our Take
Black shafts have always looked good at first. Keeping them that way has been the challenge. Moving to a plated finish instead of paint addresses that directly.
With the performance side already established in the MODUS³ lineup, this gives players another option without changing anything about how the shafts play. For those already using Nippon, it’s an easy way to update the look of a set. For others, it’s another reason to consider a lineup that already has a strong track record.
Nippon Luxury Black – The Details

The Luxury Black finish is available on select N.S.PRO MODUS³ models, including the Tour 105, Tour 120, and wedge shafts.
Initial availability is limited, with additional models expected in the future.

Modus were my last steel shaft and I loved them. If I were looking at going back to steel then Modus are on the top of the list. I see these and think.

I’m almost upset these released the week after I ordered Modus shafts for my wedges. If I hadn’t gone with graphite in the irons the 120s would’ve been the play.
I did a thing. Ohh boy
These look incredible. I’ve been playing my Forged tec Black OL and these would be great. Repeat my mantra “I don’t need, I don’t need, I don’t need.”

Fortunately for me they are only available in sets and I’m playing one length so I can’t order these. Darn.

120X 4-PW on the way
The 120x shafts fit me great… if I were building another set this black finish would be at the top of my list!
This blackout trend, if you can even call it that? Is something I’m hear for and loving…
If I wasn’t moving to CBZ’s because of the Srixon Experience, I’d definitely be buying these to go in my black RTZ’s.

I’ve got all the components and now I just need to find time to do my build. It’ll be Modus 105 R, Srixon ZX4 MK11, green/black ferrules, and REVL Comfort grips.
i had a set of the 10th anniversary black shafts. the screen printed logo chipped off, but i never had issues with the finish on the shafts. these look pretty sick, too!

Yea! I think so too. A little THP flavor.
Dang…the 105s is already sold out in 5-PW.
Loved the Modus 120s played in the past. These would look so good in my brushed copper Ai200s. Probably a good thing for my wallet they’re out of stock!
Good stuff @Hawk great writeup and photos.
Great writeup! Love that they chose plating. They look stunning!
