Golfers spend plenty of time talking about clubheads, but finding the right shaft can be just as important. The Nippon Shaft Experience gives golfers an opportunity to explore that part of the fitting equation on a much larger scale.
The annual event brings together Nippon Shaft’s National Fitting Team, PGA Tour representatives and an enormous selection of shafts for golfers to test. With roughly 1,000 test shafts on site and heads from major equipment manufacturers available, there are plenty of combinations to work through.
Going Through an Iron Shaft Fitting
During our visit, we went through an iron fitting to see how Nippon approaches the process.
Rather than simply looking at shaft weight or flex, the fitting provides an opportunity to compare different Nippon profiles vs my current shafts while paying attention to ball flight, consistency and, perhaps most importantly, how each shaft feels during the swing.
It is also a reminder of why testing matters. Shafts that say one thing on paper can produce a very different experience once paired with a golfer’s swing and preferred iron head.
Inside the Nippon Shaft PGA Tour Van
The fitting is only part of the experience.
Nippon also brings its PGA Tour Van, giving attendees a chance to step inside and see where its Tour representatives work with some of the best players in the world.
For equipment junkies, it is a rare behind-the-scenes look at a side of professional golf that most golfers never get to see up close.

Checking this out now!
Really have been loving this type of content.
Never would have guessed 110’s, but that’s a really solid change. Love the TOUR van coverage too. Really cool.

Me either. Never in a million years and even the fitter said they see something different on the range than what is stated on the spec sheet. Which is why its important to get fit.
First thought that popped up just seeing the Title was “I don’t’ remember a THP Nippon Experience” then got into the article and saw what it was and man that had to be a cool experience. It’s always fun seeing @Lord Tox test out different clubs and shafts as he has that swing consistency to really be able to tell and show a difference. It has been super interesting this year hearing from different shaft companies that all of them see shafts react differently for different golfers and how much fitting is super important for shafts, and this video was no different.
Than tour truck is also very cool and it would be fun to be able to visit and see that for sure. All those tournament passes, wow.
Great video @Lord Tox! I’m loving this type of content, keep it coming!
“on paper this doesn’t make a lot of sense” seems to be something we’re hearing more and more these days. I think that really speaks to why you should always be fit for your equipment. You said it yourself – the modus3 was a shaft you never would have thought of trying but it looked to be your best choice for generating height.

What’s your plan? Going to play the 110’s going forward?
Heck yes….I can’t wait to watch this one. Love myself some Nippon shafts – keep this awesome content coming along!

Going forward is hard to say. But certainly going to try them. I do think it could be club dependent and may not work with all styles of irons for me.
I am really liking the Modus3 115 in my irons and 125 in my wedges. It is a very stable feeling yet they feel very smooth without a lot of vibration.
That is pretty cool to get to try the various Nippon shafts back to back.
Pretty cool! I’ve heard good things about Nippon but haven’t had the chance to try any of their offerings yet!

I will tell you they are the best feeling steel shafts I’ve ever hit.
Another great video. Really cool to see the differing flight between the shafts. I’m assuming it was the same club head in all of them?
Another feather in the “get fit” cap though

Yes it was the same club head in all of them. Ai-150
This is so freaking good.
Seeing the difference in the 5’s and 10’s at the end was interesting. I never knew that.
Great video! Some really cool info in there, especially the differences in profile between the 5s and 10s.
I’m gonna need to find something to swing, The 950’s are interesting to me
This is great. There is a lot of nuance to the Modus line it seems and this helps highlight some of the differences.
What a cool experience! I used to love going to Carl's Golfland every weekend as a kid to hit balls, walk around, look at product, etc. Been to both that location and the one in Plymouth many times. Nippon shafts are top notch. I have the Modus Tour 120 X in my irons and really enjoy them all around.
I have had good luck with Nippon 120s. They have a TX version I want to try.
I had a couple testers with the 1150 GH tour in them and they were so so smooth. Possibly the best shaft I’ve ever hit.
Love love love Nippon shafts. Can’t wait to watch this.
What a cool experience. It’d be awesome to just go try a bunch of shafts, because like we saw – what something my fit or feel on paper can we way different in your hands.
I couldn’t really make out what he said, but I’d love to know why they made the 120 so different.

Pretty cool. I really like the chart with the difference between the 5’s and 10’s. I played the 950GH for a bit, and really like the smooth feel of those shafts. Those were the last steel shafts I played before switching to graphite.

That chart and graph was pretty cool wasn’t it?

I love the tidbits like that I get from THP. It was also not the tour van tour I am used to seeing on YouTube. Where are the sofa and espresso machines. :ROFLMAO:
Quite the immediate ball flight difference there. Cool to see.
And the truck, of course.
Carl’s looks like a fun place. I’ve only ordered online from them.
Huh. The Tour 120 shafts sure are unique. I didn’t even realize that but man they work nicely for my swing.
Very interesting fitting video and Nippon sure make some fantastic shafts, I don’t have tonnes experience with all their iron shafts but I really liked the Modus 130X any time I have hit it, its super stout and really requires players with tonnes of speed who load the shaft real heavy with a late release to produce the best results so I don’t think it would have been an optimum fit for @Lord Tox based on how he was swinging in this video but he hit the Modus 110S very well though, I could never play the Modus 120 as that shaft is just a horrendous fit for my golf swing.
I really like this shaft, and if I were still playing steel this would probably be the one I’d game. More manufacturers need to carry it though, I know Callaway and maybe one other offer it.
Very cool, I’m always amazed when a simple shaft difference can change height that much. Goes to show I need to be open to other shafts and listen to the experts on them, fittings are always so cool!
Really good and eye opening stuff. I’ve wanted to try the 110s since they came out.
Did the 110’s feel like anything you’ve played in the past?
Fantastic content!!! I wish it was easier to try different Nippon shafts. I’ve always played the 105 because it feels great and works for my swing. You hear about the different models and that some golfers fit the ‘5’ profile and some fit the ‘0’ profile…but there isn’t an easy way to test. And for the longest time there wasn’t a lightweight option for the 0….(though the 120 is a bit of misnomer as it’s only 114 grams.)
The fact that it played different than expected makes me even more curious.
I wonder if Nippon will ever go for a bigger market in graphite shafts. Their Regio line is supposed to compliment their Modus line…but it’s only available at certain fitting locations.
Thanks @Lord Tox !

They had all the Nippon shafts at the event, including Regio but there was a scheduling issue and we ran out of time. This was the 3rd annual event I believe. They do this once a year at a different location, just happened to be in my backyard this year, so keep an eye out next season.
