Off Course is back this week with a fantastic show and this is episode 183. Hosted by Dan Edwards, each Friday he gives you a deep look into the world of golf and equipment in a way unlike any other podcast has done before. Today, Josh Babbitt, Publisher of THP joins the show, to discuss pace of play and getting better at golf.
It wouldn’t be Off Course without some tangents, but Dan and Josh talk interviewing coaches and what goes into finding an instructor. This show has a lot going on and is one you will not want to miss as Josh Babbitt goes Off Course.

Episode 183 is here and Dan and Josh discuss the following topics.
Pace of Play in Golf
The LPGA and Golf Coverage
Interviewing an Instructor

Different people get better different ways when they are at a different place in their game. If that’s not using different too much in a sentence.
This one should be good for listen this am! KEEP IT UP!
ALSO BRING MRS. CANADAN ON. I need to convince mrs. gMan to start playing!
golfTec to check it out and they mentioned the swing evaluation. Glad to hear it was beneficial
It was a really cool way to audition. Will it hold longterm for me? History says no, but I liked what I went through and while not the least expensive "lesson" I have ever had, it seemed like a good investment to audition an instructor.
And it sounded like there was value gained with understanding your swing, even if you don’t carry on there with lessons
I think there was.
It was kind of a breath of fresh air seeing someone that I didnt have to explain my issue to, but rather noticed it with in a couple of minutes. There was also really good dialogue throughout.

sounds like a dream scenario to me.
1.. I am starting to wonder if we are getting too crazy over pace. but, I agree that on any given day a 4 plus hour round is pretty solid.
2. If @JB is improving I would love to see is as I was impressed when we played at Dormie.
3. The Netflix cup was awful and I am getting tired of all of stuff. I think I am hitting saturation with golf content and I am starting to feel that these are just cash grabs for millionaires and I not into it. I would rather watch youtube golf.
4. Seemed to drop unless I have missed it somewhere else that it will be a @Canadan/@JB pairing day one at the Grandaddy.
I thought I corrected it by saying playing together as in part of the Grandaddy.
maybe, I might have missed that. I am still listening as I get my energy drink in and get going at work.
You and Yagley playing slap tickle with story time, was not fast.
Honestly had no clue till we made the turn and I was like Oh f**k…All I can say is you’ve played it with me it’s not my fault haha
Maybe this is why he wins.. he ices everyone out..
This is the only ready golf thing I try to pause it. Hole winner should get honors. The exception being is if you are playing different tees. Then whoever is playing the furthest back should go first.
After the Srixon event I realized the limited time I have I wasn’t using efficiently. I got progressively worse this year throughout the summer because I just didn’t practice enough.
My answer last year for the do you want to get better was honestly no. I was shooting bogey golf and was content with that. But playing 3 times a month with no practice does not keep me at that level. I realized I do want to get better. I don’t need to be a single digit necessarily but I do want to actually be able to go out and shoot in the mid 80s. This winter I plan on focusing on practicing my short game and take a few lessons.
When you listen to this, I talked a bit about our round together at Briggs Ranch with @bigbov and Rank. About in a way, it changed my perspective a lot.
the new Tox legacy.
Cool. Having been there I’m sure it will hit. That was part of it was how into getting better Rank was. Then at the chipping green Danny having me bang chips for 30 minutes made me realize that a simple drill that I wasn’t doing could help me so much.
that narrative is a lot more entertaining to me though.
golf is so often approached as a leisure activity, so there’s very little practice and much less emphasis on winning for most people.
if you really want to get better, approach it in a competitive manner: practice way more and care a lot more about what happens when you play.
i lines..
Ughhhhhhhhh
End of an era.
You putting for 4 from 15 ft? Okay, I might be able to hole this bunker shot for my 7, so hang tight.
They’ll remember your twelve, Roy.
I will definitely be checking this out later. As we have discussed earlier I am making it a point to get better this winter. As Josh stated… I’m not worried about being a single digit right now but the 80’s again would be great. Used to be there.
Not sure if you noticed… I paid attention to a lot of that lesson. Tried it out next day and my chipping did improve.
– GolfTec swing evaluation in my future- just need to figure out which location
– I’m happy @JB gained a bit of a new perspective on golf
Thanks gents!
I can only speak from my perspective but I think @bigbov and Rank would agree with me.
I did not come in with expectations other than to have fun. I think starting with a shamble and getting into the flow of the experience was super helpful. I know some were worried that the nature of not having a competition would change the experience. For me not having any competition made it easy to just enjoy what an amazing experience we were having. I definitely would have been a bit frustrated had it been a competition by Tuesday. Most importantly though it was just a great 5 great guys (including Kyle) who made it easy to get into just enjoying the moment. I was legit in pain with my back and when no one scoffed at my first shank no one said anything and it made it easy. It was all about enjoying the course and the company. I genuinely like this golf by nature.
I want to get better for the next time I do an experience but I think I will approach it the same way. Just be in the moment and focus on what you can control which is to have fun.
I certainly agree w/ everything said here. Love that you included my man Kyle when saying all 5 of us because he certainly added to the enjoyment of the round.
I told Josh on Saturday when I picked him up at airport to just sit back, take it all in, and enjoy it. That first round made all of that possible.
Also, @Canadan ST+2 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> MCC
While my world of golf may be very different than @Canadan’s and @JB’s, I found everything you guys talked about very relatable. Agree on what should be a reasonable expectation of pace of play on a typical day. Some of the points about improvement and enjoyment of the game hit really hit home.
Even as a huge fan of the LPGA, I understand why it isn’t for everyone. The top tier of men’s golf is the best level of golf out there. But that’s probably only due to distance. I forgot which of the LPGA players it was and the exact number, but there was recently a string of consecutive GIR that was just mind- boggling. (Looked it up… 63 by Jin Young Kim.) I guess if I were tasked with marketing the LPGA, that’s what I would bring up… numbers and stats that exceed what we see for the PGA.
Anyway, it was great to listen in on today’s episode and I’ll listen again. Thank you.
Stop encouraging this!
