Off Course is back this week with a fantastic show and this is episode 204. Hosted by Dan Edwards, each Friday he gives you a deep look into the world of golf and equipment in a way unlike any other podcast has done before. Today, James Miles, Staff Writer from THP joins the show to discuss some new golf shafts that you might want to pay attention to.
It wouldn’t be Off Course without some tangents, but Dan and James dive into many topics including pacing of play and going low. This show has a lot going on and is one you will not want to miss as Staff Writer James Miles goes Off Course.
Episode 204 is here and Dan and James discuss the following topics.
Going Low
Managing vs Keeping a Handicap
Briggs Ranch
New Golf Shafts from Aretera and Mitsubishi
And so much more

I don’t have an official deal with the USGA and like help I am giving them 70 dollars..

Well I don’t really have a USGA handicap. I use the grint.. but making up hole scores is stupid.

I have yet to figure out how to upload my score when I don’t finish 18hole from the Grint. This time of year I get a lot of 14-16 hole rounds in before it gets too dark.

I just did it. You just skip the holes till the end and it will ask you if you want to submit the uncompleted round.

I must be doing something wrong. It always wants me to back to the first hole with no score and complete it.

Hmm.. I don’t know. Sorry.. it let me submit it.
Finally got to listen to this one.
I’ve never understood managing your handicap or sandbagging. Handicap is meant to be a living thing and reflect the current(ish) state of my game. I post pretty much every round, except if I know I’ll be playing two balls as practice or something similiar.
I recently played with a rando who said he has an annual friends competition coming up. He had several 70-80 scores in hcp calculation from the end of last season. Now he wanted to shoot several rounds close to 100 to manage his handicap for the upcoming competition. I said nothing, as he was a random, but didn’t understand that approach at all.

I know a guy who seems to often forget to post his good rounds to GHIN, but his bad rounds always get posted.
What guys like your rando forget (or don’t realize) is that posting a few bad rounds usually won’t do much to raise your handicap – and soft/hard caps limit how much you can “manage” it, especially in the short term.

Yeah, that’s why he said he needs to play many of them early on in the season…:mad::mad:

If I had that guy in a competition, he’d go to the pond straight away. Since he wasn’t someone I know, I let it be, but man what a dick.
I just don’t get handicap management. I keep my handicap to track my own progress. Granted I don’t play competitions of any kind, but I’ve been considering entering the Houston Mid Am (mainly because it’s using a private course that I want to play) I even turn in those rounds where I drop an extra ball here and there ( I always score the original ball) and I know those are supposed to be “practice rounds” and solo rounds.
My latest posted score was 20.6 over
It dropped my handicap.
I’m clearly doing it wrong lol
It does weird things to your handicap sometimes, it basically all depends on that 20th score that’s getting dropped as a result of the last round you posted. If your 20.6 replaced a differential higher than 20.6 that was counting as one of your best 8 of the last 20, it could drop it.
I’ve had the opposite happen too, where I’ve posted a differential below my index but my handicap went up. If I post a 10.9 differential that ends up being one of my best 8, and it bumps an 8.2 differential off the bottom of my last 20, my cap will go up. I just post ’em up and whatever happens, happens.

That actually makes sense. I’ve had a few brutal scores this season. It must’ve kicked one off

My oldest/20th score is an 82 and one of the low 8, so my next round there should be some movement of my handicap, unless I shoot another 82

My handicap dropped 2 points in the last 3 months… I think the also is bugged

Yes, the oldest round falls off.
Always the oldest. Your handicap is derived from your 8 best differentials of your most recent 20 rounds on a continually rolling basis, so the oldest round will always be the first to drop off.
