Off Course is back this week with a fantastic show and this is episode 211. Hosted by Dan Edwards, each Friday he gives you a deep look into the world of golf and equipment in a way unlike any other podcast has done before. Today, THP Staff Writer, James Miles joins the show to discuss various different shafts and the new Titleist GT drivers.
It wouldn’t be Off Course without some tangents, but Dan and James dive into many topics including a UST Mamiya Prototype shaft that could be exciting. This show has a lot going on and is one you will not want to miss as James Miles goes Off Course.

Episode 211 is here and Dan and James discuss the following topics.
UST Mamiya Prototype Shafts
Expectations with a Putter
Mitsubishi Shaft Talk
New Titleist GT Drivers
And so much more
You can listen to the show right here, Apple Podcasts or anywhere you do your listening and downloading from. Search for the Hackers Paradise and make sure to subscribe so you never miss an episode. I was just checking 10 min ago, if I have Dan to enjoy on my drive. And now I do! More shaft knowledge is always better. Jumping in now.
This will be a great listen! Can’t wait to dive in!
1 minute 28 seconds in and I knew it was going to be a fun episode. Always enjoy the show @Canadan ! Glad to have @Jman back on Off Course.

We tend to go way off course hahaha
What a fun way to spend 45min. Listening to you two is just hearing two buddies talk life and golf, with very cool insider tips interspersed between.
Good one as always!
thanks for tuning in, guys!!!
Always a great time with the buddy @Jman
Really enjoyed this show guys. Lots of fun discussion and you both seem pretty excited about some prototype testing.
Somehow I missed this drop this morning- tuning in now though

Will definitely be listening to this when I get some time.

HEY I KNOW THEM
Where do I sign up for the @Canadan putting school?
Enjoyed the episode gents! Well done
Not done yet but enjoying the conversation. I like the idea of going lighter in iron shafts. Will look at it for my next set. And I’m really interested in learning more about the mystery UST shaft testing.
And I actually enjoy practicing putting more than full swings on the range. The lack of feedback from hitting on the range doesn’t hold my interest.
Another great show!
What a boss golfer move by not taking a photo on the bridge while you were there, @Jman! Not sure I could have restrained myself…
Good show @Canadan and @Jman.

I’ll be back.

Appreciate the pickleball shoutout ?
Great episode guys @Canadan @Jman !
Enjoyed the listen even if I probably looked a little funny laughing and driving an empty car in traffic. I’ll have to give it a second go. I always feel like I miss stuff when I’m driving.
Listening now. Little late to the party but I am enjoying the chat. Shafts are always among my favorite topics.
Having tried a few different graphite iron shafts. So far, I have not found one that I liked long term. There are always some good shots, but there is always something still missing. The project x LS iron shafts have been a godsend for me.
Saved this for a rainy day and it is raining so…..
I’m sorry, I misunderstood what this was about.
So can we say that steel shaft are now for the older generation or just those that are not informed? I know I’ll never play with steel shafts again unless something really special happens. Like Jman said, graphite shafts are so much easier on the body too, my arthritic body is very happy that I’m not playing steel.

Not quite when so many of the pros are still choosing to play them.
I don’t think you can say that at all.. I will try to find the post, but a shaft designer that has designed lots of graphite wood and iron options says he won’t play graphite iron shafts that HE designed. He said, if you want control, play steel. If you want distance play graphite. So no. We are not there yet. Are we getting closer? Maybe. I don’t know yet.

Here is the post..
Because the Youngs Modulus of steel is defined by its crystal structure. Therefore regardless of heat treatment and/or presence of interstitial elements, the stiffness of said steel will always be the same, leading to better flexural consistency from shaft to shaft.
Graphite’s Longitudinal modulus, or E11, is based on the modulus of the carbon fiber, the resin and the ratio of those two materials. Each of the constituent materials can have variation in their moduli and depending on the accuracy of the ratio (up to ±3%), can leave you with a raw material with modulus variation of up to 5%, meaning either more variation in the flexural profile of each shaft, or more post curing manual manipulation of each shaft, again leading to potential inconsistencies.
Sort version, if you want “ball go far” use graphite, if you want “ball go same place every time” use steel…
PS-Exceptions for if you want lighter than 80ish grams and steel options and flight become limited…
PSS- I am one of the better graphite shaft engineers in the industry and have the ego to boot (see the beginning of this statement) and I have never gamed my own graphite iron shafts.

Definitely not. Steel absolutely has a place.
I’d love to make the jump to graphite in my irons. Was fit into a hybrid (steelfiber) at my fitting but the cost is a hard pill to swallow. If I knew they’d be the shaft for me for the next 5-10 years I could do it but I get worried about the swing changing as I get older and needing something “different”. At $60+ per shaft I’m having a hard time making that commitment.
