Off Course is back this week with a fantastic show and this is episode 240. Hosted by Dan Edwards, each Friday he gives you a deep look into the world of golf and equipment in a way unlike any other podcast has done before. Today, Shaft Icon Don Brown from True Sports joins the show to discuss shaft weight and how it has changed over the years.
It wouldn’t be Off Course without some tangents, but Dan and Don dive into many topics including the the challenges of working against a shaft brand identity and the overall impact on the shaft. This show has a lot going on and is one you will not want to miss as Don Brown goes Off Course.

Episode 240 is here and Dan and Don discuss the following topics.
Shifting Focus from PGA Show to the Rest of 2025
Shaft University on THP
How Has the Shaft Weight Discussion Changed Over the Years
Managing Weight in a Shaft and the Overall Impact
Project X Red and SteelFiber Nexus
And so much more
You can listen to the show right here, Apple Podcasts or anywhere you do your listening and downloading from. Search for the Hackers Paradise and make sure to subscribe so you never miss an episode. The differences market to market were quite wild and really interesting. For some reason I assumed Europe was like the US, but even the differences country to country were super interesting.
I didn’t know Germany was that way. I know here people buy mostly off the rack.

that Germany stat SHOCKED me!

It blew me away, honestly. I know quite a bit of Germans, not golfers though, and I never ever would’ve thought the golfing population there would be this way.
Btw, a fantastic episode @Canadan, if I didn’t remember to say it already.

Reindeer is fantastic, we’re fortunate to get it from relatives up in the north.
You’re the man dropping wisdom bombs that even my simple mind thinks it understands. I’ve loved the short snippets, but a full episode was enlightenment in a box.

I have a question that is really just a pure curiosity on my part: How much overlap is there between the golf and hockey divisions? I have a couple buddies who both still play beer league and both just got Project X Smoke sticks and have been gushing about them and was just curious how much the technology that goes into sticks relates to golf shafts.
Finished episode this morning. Really great episode and info!

The hockey stick R&D is done in the same facility and lab. We utilize a lot of the same materials and talk a lot about new technologies. The head of the hockey stick R&D is actually the guy who trained me on golf shaft design and our current director of composite golf R&D was a hockey stick engineer for 8 years before moving to the golf side.
So a lot of overlap…
Wow! Finally got to this one, tons of information here. I thought I was smart buying a heat gun, good thing I haven’t tried to use it yet!
