Off Course is back this week with a fantastic show. Hosted by Dan Edwards, each Friday he gives you a deep look into the world of golf and equipment in a way unlike any other podcast has done before. Today, THP Staff Writer Ryan Hawk joins the show and they discuss the Waste Management experience.
It wouldn’t be Off Course without some tangents, but Dan and Ryan Hawk talk about the experience at the Waste Management event and courses played on tour having an identity of sorts. This show has a lot going on and is one you will not want to miss as Ryan Hawk goes Off Course.

Episode 143 is here and Dan and Ryan discuss the following topics.
Waste Management Experience
Tour Courses Having Identity
Trusting the Data of Indoor Devices
Improving During the Off Season
And so much more

Oh God. Is that real?
I have not.
Buffalo throws snowballs…
The discussion on hats for hat tricks to golf needing something for a HIO is interesting!
Launch monitor discussion…
Only a couple times a year.
Haha.
Also, Sorry Dan. We’ve all been there. Well, physically I probably can’t actually get there, lack the flexibility, but you know what I mean.
It has been a fun mental progression for me this week, pondering what I would do with my time there.
The more I think about it, the more likely I would be to give it a chance about mid way through my day, with a few brews in me (because crowds), and I suspect the experience would keep me longer than planned.
My dude, I know there have been times where my scores were talked about, or a video with my swing on full sync was put on display, but I am about as human as anyone else around here, and probably more critical.
The biggest issue I face right now is how similar it looks to what worked three years ago beautifully. The difference is a bit more inside on the takeaway, and this weird little re-route hitch at the top of the swing. If I can solve that this year, I really think I can get back to what made my game stand out.
Until then? Pain.
@Hawk your swing journey has been great to follow along with and I’m envious of your practice set up!
Only comment is regarding data. Couple years ago a new shop provided great GCQuad hitting options, and courses started offering in-door hitting as well with Trackman. We went from zero winter golf to shockingly good indoor options. One, that made THPing more fun in winter for me. Two, I overdid it. Three, I learned that chasing numbers was not so good. Four, I still like it.
Heading to hit in about 20 min.

Thanks for listening. I am pretty chill for the most part, though a few people here have seen me go the other way.
You know for legal reasons we are only allowed together in a party setting once every 6 years ?
Well, 2029 then
yeah, If I’m going to the WMPO, it’s for that hole only.
Plenty of golf tournaments other places.
Man, I am so ready for golf season to get here.
I’ve got a tentative tee time scheduled for Sunday, but the weather is only looking ‘okay’ at best. We’ll see.
this is the conversation I thought would really stir up some THPer feels this week.
Can you casually hit up an indoor sim for any amount of time and have full confidence in the results without validation from a visual/outside source? I still haven’t fully wrapped my head around that idea.
Yea, I’m not sure why I trusted that at first. I didn’t even trust the ball speed numbers. How could I trust something the radar can’t even see
Much more trusting of video for path, starting line of the ball for face angle.
It depends on the location. The indoor sim place where I take my lessons I have full confidence. They’re selling a service and ball flight is an important part of that. If things weren’t taken care of they’d get a reputation for being shady or bad pros. At my LGS? Nope. The setup with walls feeling too close and some really weird flights robbed any amount of confidence I had unless it’s the fitting bay. That one has given me normal results. The weirdest thing is they all use Trackman. I guess like any piece of electronics it all depends on care and the last time they turned it off and turned it back on again.
I think I’m the same. Maybe I’m a little more willing to trust until I’m burned once. Then that particular device is forever deemed bad. Not the model or brand necessarily, but the physical device. The whole path and face angle calculations confuse me. I’d guess Trackman has a pretty good algorithm when the monitors are well taken care of. There were a few times I’d fade one with a draw swing and the pro was able to show me the contact point on the screen which was confirmed by looking at my head.
In the end calculated values are only as valuable as the confidence I have in that particular piece of equipment. It’s also one of the things I do look for and compare against the marketing for the device. Questionable marketing throws up some red flags for me.
@Canadan “So let me show you something”..
@Hawk ”OMG”!!
I lol’d in my car as I drove home at the point.
I am excited to read in as you fix it though. I have zero doubts you get it.
I am going to figure out putting!
???
That pronunciation of s’mores (sa -mores) > dan’s pronunciation for vague in this episode
