Off Course is back this week with a fantastic show and this is episode 224. Hosted by Dan Edwards, each Friday he gives you a deep look into the world of golf and equipment in a way unlike any other podcast has done before. Today, wedge expert Terry Koehler, joins the show and we discuss both Edison 2.0 wedges and the overall challenges of wedge play.
It wouldn’t be Off Course without some tangents, but Dan and Terry dive into many topics including leading edge vs trailing edge and player impact. This show has a lot going on and is one you will not want to miss as Terry Koehler goes Off Course.

Episode 224 is here and Dan and Terry Koehler discuss the following topics.
Player Impact on a Wedge
The Overall Challenges of Wedge Play
What Matters More – Leading Edge vs Trailing Edge
Wedge Launch Monitor Battles
And so much more

Really good episode this week. @Canadan diving in deeper and really challenging some of the answers brought a great conversation.
Sunday drive, I know what I’m listening to!
Really enjoyed when Terry was on a few months ago, this will be great
Digging in now.
Great episode. TK is a wealth of knowledge on equipment design.
Another great episode. Some thought provoking stuff, for sure. I need to try an Edison next time I replace a gap or sand wedge. I only use my lob for close in touch work, rarely more than 30 yards, and do well with it, but wouldn’t mind a touch more forgiveness in the other two.
About halfway through but man when he talks about making a sole that doesn’t have to be specialized based on your lie, that spoke to me. Especially when speaking on bunker conditions
So much knowledge in Terry!
will dive in later..
Man, really enjoyed this. Likely would have ordered a head to tinker with over winter if I could have found them in the site.
Six hour drive tomorrow, can’t wait to hear this one! I’ve been knee deep in wedges this past summer and am looking forward to hearing how wrong I am.
@Canadan it’s funny that you talked about Scottie using vokey wedges and not Taylormade wedges. ??
So I’ve listened twice and am halfway through one of the older ones.
That’s a lot to unpack….
Man this was such a good listen. I’ve never used Edison wedges, but they sound like they think about it the right way!

A different way, for sure. Which I think is great because more options for all golfers is a great thing.

Very interested to hear your thoughts, and thanks for listening!!

What wedge (loft/bounce/grind) would you consider to be the most versatile across all skill levels and playing conditions of your entire line of wedges?

So first off, I think the answer to my question from the other thread is: “anything that says “Edison 2.0”.
He has a very pragmatic approach and delivers very logical reasoning. I can’t claim to know what I don’t know about wedges. Now I have a ton of questions.
1. “Wedges have hardly changed over the years.” Makes sense and looks that way to me.
2. “We’re playing tour inspired/designed wedges”. It’s funny how people say what the pro’s play doesn’t effect their decision about what to purchase, but what we do purchase is totally influenced by the pros. Thinking back to the Opus release and how much the Callaway Staff was involved.
3. “Play a spinny ball to help around the greens”. Sounds good to me.
4. “Shaft flex/weight matters”. Makes sense to blend them with the set and avoiding drastic weight/flex differential. I don’t know anything about KBS but he’s got three flex options which I don’t see anyone else doing.
5. “Bounce/Grind is over done”. That was a warm and fuzzy for me and kinda where my question on the other thread came from. One minute I think I want more, the next I think I want less. I totally believe I get fooled by randomness of good days vs. bad. I know I can feel the difference between of 8 and 14 but who the hell knows if it’s helping or hurting. I was starting to think the smart move might be a “jack of all trades” and know it forwards and back. Pretty sure that’s what got me sucked in.
6. “The Koehler Sole”. Just looking at these makes me think I’ll do nothing but lay sod over the ball. He explained it well, but man it just seems too simple.
7. “Grooves are grooves”. Nobody has a groove advantage. Bold statement but if everything has to be by the book then OK.
8. “The tech in the 7 iron spot isn’t helping your wedge game”. Makes sense too.
9. “Driving range mats and launch monitors”. Get them in the grass, on the course then see.
He’s so passionate about what he does and how he does it, it baffles me why these aren’t more mainstream. Put the forgiveness where you need it. Could we (true hackers, not you good golfers) actually just be playing “vanity” wedges and not know it? Or admit to it? So much of what he talked about just sounded like stating the obvious, which apparently didn’t seem so obvious…..at least to me.
It almost seems like he’s where Solheim was with irons (or even the Anser putter he used as an example) and Callaway was with Big Bertha. I guess people are just that set in their ways? Dunno, add it all up and if you don’t like it send it back.
Just damn, I gotta try one.
Gotta say this was a good listen and now I am very intrigued with his wedges.

There’s an earlier episode, I think it’s #209, that’s really good as well.
Another very good listen. “Reasonably close” makes way more sense than one might think. Seems like Edison has a very unique and deliberate approach that could benefit a lot of golfers.
Great episode. I have enjoyed each time Terry is on. I’m playing the 2.0 in 55* & 59*. I have 55 rounds on them this year and I love them.
I watched this show yesterday. Just a ton of info on wedges.
Their wedges would enhance any golfer’s game I believe.
Finishing this up right now on a walk.
Good talk. Fun listen.
Always fun to listen to someone devoted to wedges and not just from the tour player perspective. What he’s saying about striking wedges too high resonates so much for me everywhere outside of Briggs Ranch.
The tech in the 7 iron isn’t helping your wedge game…. I felt that deep in my guy while listening on the plane. He makes some really good points that I need to test for myself.
Just a FYI….
I signed up for his newsletter and messed around with some of the online fitting a few days ago and a happy little coupon just showed up in my email.
Hint ?
Sold.
I read all I can read and heard all I needed to hear. Talked to Bill for a bit and ordered a 55* today. This is the first “brand new” golf club I’ve bought since 2003.
Stayed tuned…..
This was a good listen as was the previous episode with Terry. I’m definitely intrigued. I’d love to test one before buying. The high miss isn’t that common for me but I’m quite familiar with low and toe. Curious what kind of difference these offer there.

You can’t lose, money back guarantee. I figure if they’ll put their money where their mouth is, that I’d do the same.

Awesome!!
I’m really looking forward to your feedback.
Really enjoyed this one. The 7 iron tech to a wedge resonated with me as well.
Interesting about all in on shafts, compared to others who say just put your irons shafts in, but both are close compared to playing 75g graphite irons and 130g steel wedges

His pragmatic contrarian personality reminded me too much of myself and too much of what he said made too much sense to me. Can’t wait to dig into this thing!
Those Edison wedges have been messing with me horribly since the podcast. I have a bunch of wedges I’ve been messing with and Mr. Koehler pretty much threw everything out the window.

Dang! I should have signed up for that newsletter.
After the podcasts, and reading most of the review thread, and checking the wear pattern on my Ping wedges, I ended up ordering a 49* head earlier this week. It should be here tomorrow actually. I’ll shaft it up asap and have it bent to 48*
I’m really anxious to give it a try.

Yeah man, spill your guts when it’s all said and done!
My 49 arrived this afternoon. As many have mentioned it does look much better in person than it does in pictures. The biggest surprise, to me anyway, is its size. It’s very compact.
I’ll post up some side by side pics with other clubs tomorrow after I glue a shaft in it.

That’s true, but it would feel wrong to ask for my money back unless the product quality was awful. I don’t think that’s the case here. As Terry also pointed out, wedges need to be tested off grass. I wholeheartedly agree and my outdoor season is closing quickly. This may be a spring time purchase.

I’m 100% committed to it. I spent hours and hours this past year with a pile of wedges at our chipping green. So much that I’m confident to know what to expect from different lies and landing areas all around the green. I’m not planning to play “back and forth” with any of the others. In fact, all my other wedges (except set PW) are coming out of the bag. I’ve got 2 rounds planned coming up and am only going to bag this 55*.
I won’t be sad to put these out to pasture.

I understand what you’re saying but I don’t think it would be in bad faith if you gave the wedge and honest run and concluded the performance didn’t achieve your expectations.
I played his Eidolon Wedges about 25 yrs ago. They spun like no one’s business. If you don’t go for a thorough wedge fitting, I’d check them out.
Been there.
I was fit at Artisan in Ft Worth for 2.5 hr – 3 yrs later I still have no need to purchase wedges. I tried the above for many years, even was fit, but no one fits like Artisan. Just ordered another 59 and will use the old one as my practice wedge. I do think bounce and grind matter when you have a consistent wedge swing.
Good luck.

I get it, been there haha. I have a short game membership at a local course and frequent that practice area. My wedge play was pretty solid this year and I feel pretty good about my setup. However, I’m not a great wedge player by any stretch. Definitely room for improvement and these are intriguing.
Ok! I got a shaft glued in this morning and this thing is ready to go.
