PING G440 Irons

It has been interesting to follow the journey which PING has taken their legendary G irons on in the past few release cycles. There has been a focused effort from the company to find ways to keep the forgiveness which the series is known for but evolve the look so that it appeals to more golfers. The PING G440 irons take that blending further than ever before, and they should generate some interesting conversations.

The main description of the G440 irons from PING is that they are an iron which will fit golfers who need game-improvement playability, but want the look of a more player-style shaping. Now, does that mean PING has gotten them as small as a true players iron? Of course not, but it does mean that they have used a plethora of design traits to blur the line as much as possible.

Overall, the irons are more shallow and boast thinner faces than with G430, not to mention much work has been done to get the CG lower, thus increasing the launch to go along with added speed. Going to a thinner face did make them have to advance their PureFlex cavity further as well, now a 4-piece molded badge which is more flexible to expand and add support to ball speed creation while also improving sound/feel.

The satin body as well as the clean shaping of the head are tied together by that badging and its flashes of chrome with blue accents. Along with all these changes though, PING has reconfirmed its commitment to proper gapping by lengthening the 4, 5, and 6 irons and reducing the number of wedges from five to four. If that wasn’t enough the 56-degree is actually inspired by the legendary Eye2 sand wedge, one of the best bunker clubs ever made.

Aiding in the journey of producing one of the most playable irons are the new PING AWT 3.0 (R, S, X) shafts as the standard steel option. They are the result of years of development to better tune the ascending weight technology and its performance. The graphite option will be the PING Alta CB Blue (SR, R, S). There will also be an High Launch (HL) option on the G440 irons using lighter PING Alta Quick 35/45 shafts as well as lighter grips.

The Details

PING will still be offering the new G440 irons in standard, Power Spec, and Retro Spec options for those curious, there will also be a wide assortment of optional stock shaft choices available. The G440 irons will be made in 4-9, PW (42) , UW (47), 52 and 56 degrees with pricing at $170 per club for steel, $185 for graphite.
