It has been interesting to follow the journey which PING has taken their legendary G irons on in the past few release cycles. There has been a focused effort from the company to find ways to keep the forgiveness which the series is known for but evolve the look so that it appeals to more golfers. The PING G440 irons take that blending further than ever before, and they should generate some interesting conversations.

PING G440 Irons
The main description of the G440 irons from PING is that they are an iron which will fit golfers who need game-improvement playability, but want the look of a more player-style shaping. Now, does that mean PING has gotten them as small as a true players iron? Of course not, but it does mean that they have used a plethora of design traits to blur the line as much as possible.

Overall, the irons are more shallow and boast thinner faces than with G430, not to mention much work has been done to get the CG lower, thus increasing the launch to go along with added speed. Going to a thinner face did make them have to advance their PureFlex cavity further as well, now a 4-piece molded badge which is more flexible to expand and add support to ball speed creation while also improving sound/feel.
The satin body as well as the clean shaping of the head are tied together by that badging and its flashes of chrome with blue accents. Along with all these changes though, PING has reconfirmed its commitment to proper gapping by lengthening the 4, 5, and 6 irons and reducing the number of wedges from five to four. If that wasn’t enough the 56-degree is actually inspired by the legendary Eye2 sand wedge, one of the best bunker clubs ever made.

Aiding in the journey of producing one of the most playable irons are the new PING AWT 3.0 (R, S, X) shafts as the standard steel option. They are the result of years of development to better tune the ascending weight technology and its performance. The graphite option will be the PING Alta CB Blue (SR, R, S). There will also be an High Launch (HL) option on the G440 irons using lighter PING Alta Quick 35/45 shafts as well as lighter grips.
The Details
PING will still be offering the new G440 irons in standard, Power Spec, and Retro Spec options for those curious, there will also be a wide assortment of optional stock shaft choices available. The G440 irons will be made in 4-9, PW (42) , UW (47), 52 and 56 degrees with pricing at $170 per club for steel, $185 for graphite.

Good looking iron in this segment, but I’ll be honest. Looks Like a Srixon iron from the back.
The will do well. Ping’s really crushed it with their releases lately so I don’t see why they wouldn’t, but I am curious to see how the shallower face plays out with some of their player types. Here at least.
Feel like this segment of iron always does pretty well for PING…especially at a competitive price point per iron
A big improvement in looks and shaping for this line. Long overdue and I am sure that aspect will be loved. I’m not usually anti-chrome, but it does look unusual for a PING G iron to me. I want to try them for sure.
I’m definitely in the camp of seeing these as a big aesthetic improvement over previous G-irons…to the point that they don’t look very “(recent) Ping” to my eyes. I’m sure they’ll be as successful as all of their recent releases seem to have been.
That cut out near the heel of the Ping irons always throws me off.

after handing these last week, most of the head is still the normal Ping satin finish. Thankfully. 🙂

This is one of the better looking GI irons PING has released in a while. Too bad it looks like the Cleveland Zipcore XL and the Srixon ZXi irons had a baby. But, the wedge options to a 56* is a nice touch.
Don’t ask me why, it’s probably a me thing…I hate the little 7 etched in the corner

My only gripe is the blue stripe across the back. I wished they would have just left that off or painted it black. If I adopt I will definitely remove the blue. Not a dealbreaker though. I didn’t like the blue on my 925 HL’s but don’t even notice it now.
I have played PING irons in the past including 2 versions of the G line. I like the looks of these new G 440s.

Good looking set of irons. Based on some of the pictures, it looks like they did a pretty good job of hiding some of the mass.

I agree, they are good looking irons. I was making the statement that PING basically had to steal the looks of those clubs to make a good looking GI iron for themselves.
Looks wise these are a bit of a miss for me have a bit of a components vibe to them.
Wow! I love these.
Not generally the profile or type of iron I go for but if there was any … darn just remembered the ZXi4 … Okay the GI space is awesome his year and has so many good options. Always enjoyed PING irons so pretty sweet they came back with such a great looking iron in the GI space.
Going to be hard to pick between the PING G440, Elyte and ZXi4s.

Consumers like color swaths on clubs, I agree with you on the whole head looking better without it, but they wouldn’t do it without reason (sales).
I am very impressed with how the shape of the G iron series has evolved over the past 15 years.
From an iron I would NEVER play visually/size-wise, to one that I could probably put into play and be ok with it.

Agreed. I have always liked the G series irons, but as I have improved, I have been hoping for a smaller profile G series model. These may possibly meet those criteria. Blade length seems shorter than the G430’s.

Metalwoods I get, and maybe its just internet golferspeak (is that one word? lol), but it seems Srixon gets alot of love when it comes to irons as well as Titleist and both are about as vanilla (from a color swaths perspective) as you can be. People also love players distance irons, P790 type irons etc, which even in Ping’s lineup (i530) are very clean looking and color agnostic. One would think that would sell better than one with some colorway on it because of it maybe not matching one’s metalwoods colorway, bag itself or headcovers., etc.
But then again we are the .001% lunatic fringe where stuff like this matters. But if you are saying oems want a colorway then it must matter to the everyday golfer??
Which leads me to ask. I could see a matching colorway if one were to buy a G440 set from driver down to the irons. But do people still do that nowadays?

I think I posted my measurements already in the old 440 thread, but I am the goof ball that keeps a soft sewists ruler in his wallet at all times just so I can measure new irons once they come into the shops. 🙂 When I hit the 440 last week I measured it. Maybe if I put them side by side and calipered it instead of my soft ruler there would be a larger difference, but while the size of the G4xx iron has shrunk a little bit over the years, I am not seeing that large of a decrease from the 430. The biggest jump was from the G2016 to the G400 (sole width being smaller) and the G400 to the G410 (blade length being shorter) based off my database below. The 440 sole ‘might’ be a hair thinner than 1″ wide in the middle. The toe height is a hair shallower than the 430 supporting the Ping info, and the blade length I had as 3″ from the bend in the hosel to the very end. If I had to measure again, I might be convinced its 2 15/16″. I don’t have it here but the blade length on the i200 was 2 15/16″.
I do think Ping has done a nice job of chamfering off the top line year over year to help make it appear thinner/smaller. And I have seen this first hand making a difference to my eye. When I did a fitting 2 years ago, the i230 and ZX5 measure very similarly overall, but the ZX5 looks more inviting to me with the thicker topline than the i230. The 230 looked like a blade to me. Which I know its not but coming from GI/SGI irons I told the fitter, I just need more girth up top 🙂

I don’t think you can go wrong with the Ping iron and the G440 is proof of that. They will never be the top performer in all categories, but for the mere mortal golfer, they will perform very reliably. My first set of irons were the GMax (remember this) and after selling them to one of my playing partners, I moved on to something else. Recently started playing the G430 HL’s and they are forgiving and reliable, but I really need something with a heavier shaft and I think it will be the G440’s.
In my opinion, this is the best looking set in the series since the G25s.
It feels like there’s a constant ebb and flow between looks and performance. And occasionally they get the balance just right.
While I’m not a fan of the blue, I get where having a bit of color helps it stand out. But Titleist, Srixon and Mizuno have gotten by for years without color.
I also think they are similar to Mizuno in that the lofts have gotten so jacked that I would question if I needed to start with a six or seven iron. And at some point does buying a five club iron set seem kind of silly. I guess you could buy the UW to get back to six.

Agree on being the minority and will agree Callaway and TM prior gens had colors, but even their GI irons are trending into the color agnostic realm for 2025. I don’t see any green on the Elytes this year.

And TM is sticking with the Qi irons but making them in a black/gunmetal finish, but starting with last year’s Qi irons they are pretty plain when their accent for the metalwoods was blue and orangeish… and the Stealth irons were also just black and white badging even though their drivers had red accents.

I used Ping G410 irons for a year somewhat recently. I agree with many that these are quite handsome for a true SGI club
Not for me anymore, but i have a major softspot for the Ping G series. One of my best seasons ever was with a full G bag (Ping G15)

I liked how they retooled the lofts on the 440 wedges. Although to Ping’s credit, when I had the G430s they did gap off right:
6i – 155
7i – 145
8i – 135
9i – 125
PW -115
45* – 105
50* – 95
Now with the 440 42* PW and 47* UW I much prefer that setup which matched another set of irons I gamed and liked that gapping.
I would rather have my GW/UW be my 100 yd club.
And the 56* was inspired by the EYE2 design with its bounce profile, sole design, and slimmer hosel. Neat.
The more I look at these, the more they are growing on me. I am going to GG on Friday and hit these. These may have jumped ahead of the ZXi4 and AI200/300. Tied with Elyte for the most likely to purchase category. I can save a little money by going either G440 or Elyte.

I think looks people in this segment are always chasing the Hot Metal releases. The Elyte looks really good as well.
The lofts on these match up rather well with the i530. If the middle irons are anywhere near as good… look out! Not sure about the shorter irons for control as I have well documented in the i530 thread.
Had a chance to hit the G440 7 iron again yesterday.
One thing I am noticing, is Golf Galaxy and my local Golf shop both had a “Retro” spec head which is AWESOME to see. Especially for us that need some added loft to get the ball air born.
The shop was dead and so I did a little self fitting. Retro Lofted 7i G440 head with Chrome Tour X ball and 3 different shafts AWT3.0, Alta CB and Elevate 95 all in R flex.

I noticed that the Alta blue graphite shaft now says “AWT” on it. So I asked Ping if it was an ascending weight shaft like the AWT steel shaft is. They said yes but only in one direction..
Stated weight is for the 7i. So in reg flex would be 73g. Then each iron stronger in loft is 1.5g less and from 8i on down is the same weight as the 7i.
So:
