PING G740 Review

PING G740 Irons – Putting the Super in Game Improvement

While true super game improvement irons may not be as trendy to talk about as they once were given the creation of so many “in-between” designs, they remain notably popular, especially when talking about the G-Series from PING.

Since this lineup was introduced by the brand, it has been a leader in the category, and a go to for golfers who need launch and forgiveness but don’t want to sacrifice distance.

PING G740 Irons

When you see the G tag on a set of irons from PING, you know already that the name of the game will be forgiveness. With the G740, the brand is fully targeting the super game improvement(SGI) segment. Naturally, that means unwavering attention has been given not only to creating an iron that looks like a PING G release, but also committing to distance and launch above all else.

Bigger Shape, Faster Face

With the new G740’s, a major goal was finding ways to create as much ball speed as possible for golfers who battle inconsistent impact tendencies. To address that, things got bigger.

Specifically, the 17-4 stainless steel design has undergone a new heat treatment which let PING go with a thinner face than in the past. That means not just more flexion, but a bigger surface area as well. Combined with a wider sole that uses a dual camber grind, the G740 is an iron with low-back CG, massive speed potential, and more space to miss.

Sound and Feel Management

Of course, with such changes, it would be easy for the sound (feel) to get a bit harsh and cumbersome, thankfully though, PING remains a leader in dampening technologies.

Within the cavity of the G740 they are using “PurFlex” badging which actually has three specific flex zones to both control the bending of the face while also bringing acoustics into a more G-Series zone of audible familiarity.

As you can see, the G740 irons are certainly touting the technical innovations which differentiate them from their predecessors, they are also still very faithfully PING in all aspects.
