PING refreshed their forged version of Glide wedges back in the fall, and it’s been well over two years since we’ve been introduced to the Glide 3.0 series. While the golfing world got a glimpse of the new Glide 4.0 Wedges since being released on Tour, we’ve all been waiting for the official details to be released. Well, wait no longer, as today, the Glide 4.0 wedges from PING become official.
The Glide range has been well received over the years, especially by PING loyalists. As we look at this newest generation, it’s not surprising that there are more evolutionary tweaks than a complete rebuild. We get a material change from the 431 Stainless Steel of the Glide 3.0 to 8620 Carbon steel. PING used 8620 Carbon steel back in the Glide 2.0 Stealth, arguably the best feeling wedge within the range. Also helping to enhance the feel is a softer and larger elastomer insert allowing 36% more face contact.
Being that spin control is a vital part of wedge design, PING has utilized precision-milled grooves and a new Emery face blast, which adds even more texture in between all those grooves. The presence of this Emery face blast will produce more friction help to impart more consistent spin from shot to shot. PING also manipulates the grooves depending on the loft. Lower lofted wedges have grooves with a 20° sidewall, while the higher lofts (54° and above) have a 28° sidewall to generate more spin on those shots closer to the green.
PING has long been known as a brand that pushes fitting. Therefore, it should be no surprise that they offer four different grind options to help match a Glide 4.0 wedge to golfers playing conditions and angle of attack. Below is a quick breakdown of the four grinds.
S Grind: Offers heel and trailing edge relief, with plenty of bounce. According to PING, this will fit most golfers.
W Grind: Full sole design and the most forgiving through the turf. Specialized for bunker play and square-face shots.
T Grind: Only found in 58 and 60. Half-moon sole shape with a high leading edge bounce. Overall bounce is the lowest of the group.
E Grind: High toe design with an improved leading edge shape. Emulates that classic Eye 2 wedge design proven to excel out of bunkers.
PING Glide 4.0 wedges offer a compact, rounded shape that should be pleasing to many. The wedges will be available in April 2022 and with a price tag of $208 a wedge, that will surely be part of the conversation.
With plenty of loft and grind options, will a Glide 4.0 wedge find its way into your bag? More information on the latest wedges from PING is available at www.ping.com.
No real world play yet, but hitting them into the net, I really do like the feel. Not as soft as my forged wedges, but there’s something about the feedback that I really like.
To be determined…
Black. Ping called it stealth in the glide 2.0. Was just borrowing that terminology.
The prices on the 4.0 are amazing. I still can’t believe I didn’t buy them. I have loved the 3.0 I’ve had two sets of them. But this time I went with the tailor-made MG4. S159 look fantastic though.
I game G425 irons down to the UW and towards the end of the season last year also put a Glide 4.0 56.14 Wide sole in the bag. While they blend pretty well from a looks perspective being a Ping and all with the same satin look, I felt like the profile was a hair too small to blend well. I don’t get the same level of confidence as I do with the set wedge.
I game a CBX2 Full Face 2 60* and was thinking about swapping the Glide 4.0 for a CBX4 56*. I feel like profile wise it would be a better flow.
But thats just me. I have hit and scored well with the Glide so I am not taking anything away from it.
I do feel like the glide 4.0 were slightly too small, as well. Although i really like them. They have the glide pro for that size. The glide 3.0 were chefskiss size wise.

Was the 3.0 a little bigger ? I skipped that one. Had the 2.0 then 4.0
I have the 54 and 58 in the Eye 2 sole in the 3.0 so size didn’t seem to be an issue. I got the Eye 2 again in my 58 but the 52 doesn’t come in that. Head size doesn’t seem to matter to me as I rarely use these as full swing clubs but I will be interested to see if I notice a difference.
From a head size view, they seem to flow pretty well into the G425 irons.
How their next set of wedges will look is still TBD I guess but the Hot List showing their name seems to probably align them more to the i series.

Yes the 3.0 seemed bigger to me.

So far, I’m very glad that I did. It’s been tremendous for me out of the sand and for touch shots/chips around the green. I’ve been getting up & down from spots where I vastly have not in the past. Made a very tricky chip-in for bird today with it. Short shot, green running away. Put a tremendous amount of spin on the ball relative to how short it was, chip couldn’t have been holed without that action. I’ve only used it a few times over 3 rounds for full shots, and it’s been very good there, too.
The Eye 2 sole grind seems to jibe very well with my short game swing. Like the name, "Glide," might signify, more than the SS wedges for me, the ES feels slippery through the sand and greenside rough. It’s been a really fun experiment so far.
