Just when you thought release season was slowing down, another drop is coming in hot, and this time it is PING doing the honors as they introduce their new i540 irons. The second generation of the brands foray into the modern players distance hollow style iron, this time around the emphasis is on control driven distance.
PING i540 Irons
The i540 look to take what PING started with the i530’s and turn things up a notch within the players distance category. Given that this segment shows absolutely no signs of slowing down, it has become a bit of an arms race for many companies, and PING is ensuring golfers that they are up to the challenge.

This type of iron has certainly taken a life of its own with golfers that want something which at setup looks very much on the more compact side of things, but does not sacrifice sheer speed and power to create that visual. Obviously, the way most companies have accomplished this is by going to a hollow body type design, and PING’s foray into that with the i530’s was met with positivity, and some constructive feedback as well.
Distance Through Materials and Weighting
For the new i540 irons, PING has worked to add more distance through the implementation of tungsten sole weighting in the 4-7 to lower the CG as well as implementing a maraging steel C300 face welded to the 17-4 stainless frame.
These two aspects, according to PING, combine to create a “metalwood like” face reaction to increase ball speed potential while increasing the launch.

inR-Air Technology and Internal Design
The biggest story though is internal. With the iDi driving iron, PING introduced their “inR-Air” tech which actually uses an air pocket within the iron. For the i540’s, that pocket has been designed to sit behind the club face and work in harmony with the i-Beam structure to remove any off-putting acoustic frequencies while also adding support.
Essentially, this acts as a dampening situation to tone down the firmness of the C300 face and give a more “full” sound at impact.

Okay, so this afternoon I got a chance to hit the demo 7 iron again at the golf shop.

I will amend my original statement about it being a soft iron and say that it feels softer than it sounds. As I found it to have a very sharp sound, but a good feel when hitting it out of the middle
Going to get get fit for 540s soon, have G 430s now. Being a senior, my fitter felt I should try these (many of his older customers love them). My 7 iron ball speed is right around 100mph. I like the modern lofts but have to keep spin and decent angle in mind. Age affects swing speed not passion. Thinking about T350 also. Thoughts?? Thanks

Get the retro spec. You’ll be fine!
It was 73 degrees in Ohio today. I finally got a chance to hit my new i540’s. I went to the local mom and pop driving range. Shitty balls, off a mat. I have not swung a club since October. All that being said, I really love these irons. Keep in mind, I have only played big, chunky, game improvement irons my whole life. I wouldn’t know what “soft” feels like if it hit me. These irons feel powerful. They felt better than all the GI irons I have played over the past 15 years. I was worried about being able to make solid contact with such a compact head. This was not an issue. I hit them pretty damn well. Lots of height, lots of distance, and a great feel. I also spent time using the gap wedge for a bunch of chips just off the green. So easy to control, loved it! Just a small sample size with shitty balls and early season form but I think I am going to love these once I get some time with them!

No, a crappy little range called Westlawn on Collier Rd. I think the balls are like 30 years old. They have been in business over 50 years.
These might be the best looking PING irons ever.

Looking to get the first nine holes in with mine this week. Had them at the range over the weekend and I really like them!! Looking forward to dialing them in! And yes, I love the looks of them even though there are many haters who diss them.
Forgot to put this in here, but last week I had some fun with 7i’s, I’ll let you guess which is the 540 🤣

For a guy that has owned 26 sets of Pings since the “Eye”’s, these are one of my favorite looking Ping irons since the S56, which is still one of my favorite Pings ever.
I just got back from the driving range. Second time hitting the i540’s. First off, I don’t know why I waited so long to make the move to player’s distance irons. I was afraid they would be hard to hit. These things are easy to hit!! And they look much better at address (less offset, thinner top line) than my super game improvement clubs of the past. I should have made the switch long ago. I need to stop reading stuff in forums and experience these things for myself. They feel better than my previous two sets of irons (Rogue ST Max and Elyte X). I was able to use the grass tees for the first time but we got a ton of rain and tees were mushy and hard to compress the ball. Even under those circumstances I was easily getting the ball in air with little effort. I have taken a few lessons this winter and that may have played a part in my success but I am loving these irons! If anyone has been hesitant to give up their game improvement irons and move to something sleeker, I say “do it”!! Can’t wait for golf league in a couple weeks!!
I found that PING irons are never the best looking. They always have this futuristic type look to them, but the i540 irons have a refined softness, which is nice. The i230 irons have this Quality as well.

Eh, imo, this badging/cavity-cap could get beaten and abused.
Theyre definitely an improvement in the 500’s though, I’ll give you that!

I suppose if you are hitting out of 6 inch mud, and the club gets engulfed in it, you might have issues.

I’m not talking mud, it’s solid, mud wouldn’t be an issue. I’m speaking of chatter based on the material itself having it in hand.

If you think I mind chatter, then you’ve been under a rock….😜
Also, I know some of you think I’m being hypercritical, despite me being a long time PING fanboy here on THP, but they are points worth conversation.

And you can’t please everyone. It’s like being a high school football coach. Half the kids sit the bench and their parents are pissed. Say something less than positive about a set of irons that someone just dropped $1500 on and they take it personally. This is why people should do their own research. Everyone’s tastes and preference are different.

Saw these today. They don’t look bad. Be a good set of irons if they fixed the wedge issues of the i530

Patiently awaiting the UPS truck. Today is the day! Will put some grips on when they get here and hit the SIM for some numbers tomorrow. Stay tuned….
Got them! A little background…I’m 61 years old. Have lost a ton of distance the last few years. I play at a 7 handicap currently. Currently playing Mizuno JPX Forged Black with Steelfiber i95 cw Stiff. (2 up , one strong.). Love the irons but was hoping to find something with more distance.
Ordered the Ping i540 Blue Dot, Steel Fiber i95 cw REGULAR. Standard lofts. The lofts are very similar to the Mizunos.
First Sim session: My distances jumped one full club. My dispersion was much better. I’m not getting some of the numbers some of you do, but for example, My Mizuno 7i distance was 150 yards, the i540’s are 165. The Gap-8i were similar to the Mizunos. Less than 10 yards difference per club. The spin numbers on the 7i are lower but similar to everyone else that hits these. (4750). The descent angle was pretty decent at 45-48. If these numbers transfer outside I’ll be happy.
In summary, no surprises with these. They’re longer than my Mizunos, forgiveness seems similar. Dispersion is improved. I really like the looks of these. The sound and feel vs the Mizunos doesn’t bother me at all, but I’ve been a long time Ping fan which may make me somewhat immune to feel and noise. :ROFLMAO:Overall, I think I’m going to really like these.
Played my first nine holes with the i540’s this morning . First hole, 349 yard, par 4. Second shot, 119 yards out. Pull the 9 iron. High, soaring shot to 3 feet. Make the birdie putt!! Needless to say, I am loving these clubs. Easy to hit, look good and go far!
