The Project X steel iron shaft is one of the iconic designs not just for True Temper Sports, but all of golf. Played by the biggest names on the biggest stages in the world, with some legendary wins to boot, the blue label is as recognizable as any other golf shaft on the planet.
While it set the stage for what low-launch and low-spin iron shafts could be beyond the world of Dynamic Gold, times and equipment change, so it is time for a new evolution of the original.
Project X Red Steel Shafts
The reality is that not only have players changed, so too have the spin and launch profiles of irons almost across the board. With that, it is natural for a shaft manufacturer to bring additional options to market. In fact, we have seen it many times over within the Project X portfolio, but never quite like this, not when talking about the stability and control which the original is known for.

With Project X Red, True Temper is seeking to keep those traits front and center while also making them more tuned for the modern trend of lighter and higher. According to VP Marketing and Innovation (and all around legend in the industry) Don Brown:
“With Project X Red, we wanted to evolve the iconic performance of the original Project X by giving players more versatility in their trajectory and spin. Whether you’re looking to hold greens more effectively or optimize your ball flight, Project X Red delivers the perfect balance of launch, spin, and control.”

So, while the bright red in place of the classic blue on the label may be the first thing to catch the attention of golfers, True Temper believes that the more optimal trajectory and spin is what will really win them over. Not only does the Project X Red provide around 1-degree more launch and add 500 RPM, but it is also lighter than its patriarch. How much lighter? According to True Temper, 15g in 5.5, 10g in 6.0, and 5g in the 6.5.

The Details
While pricing and widespread availability details are still to come, the Project X Red is no longer a secret. In fact, True Temper began seeding the 6.5’s on Tour just last week, which means we should be seeing, and hearing, much more very soon.

These sound like a great idea for today’s strong-lofted distance irons. I never cared for the feel of the OG. I’m curious if these will be a bit smoother.

Most likely not as the goal was more to create more launch and a little more spin, but in the same familiar feel, otherwise I don’t think they’d have put that classic label on there (in red), we would have gotten a new PXi or something that way.
Those should definitely be more playable for more people. Little less weight and a little more launch should fit a lot more people than the original Project X.
Nice to have options. I’d try it.
Crazy that it’s taken this long for a shaft like this to appear in that line. That being said the blue is so iconic I can see why.
Definitely intrigued. Wouldn’t mind trying a bit of a step down in weight and I usually need the spin.
I feel like Project X has always had its own feel..to be able to replicate that with some more launch and spin sounds like a win for a good amount of people
Less weight, more launch, and same feel as project X? I can’t wait to try them. I’ve always have good dispersion with PX until I get tired.
I feel the same. It is pretty exciting to have something like this available for the player that never quite did or no longer fits the full beast of the old ones though.
PX(i), Is that you?

No, it’s not.

Pretty similar though.

But a new and unique design, it’s not a rehash of PXi.
Any of the pro’s using these?
Where was this 3 months ago when I built my new irons. Ugh.
These are going to be very popular
Most golfers need launch and spin. Seems like the right direction for the majority of golfers.
The 5.5 sounds like a great option for me if I still played steel shafts. I hadn’t used a PX shaft since a set of Cobra II Osize in 1999. As I got older I just didn’t get along with them. These sound like they would have addressed what I needed, though. Good option for the market.

More interesting is this was very much a Tour driven design

Your guys probably need launch and spin more than your average joe due to the courses they play.
But I doubt you will see many of these on tour. Just a guess.
That is what I was thinking.
This seems to make all the sense in world to me. Classic shaft plus a little extra launch and spin should do big numbers.
About time! Whenever I hit them in modern heads I’ve had to drop down a flex to get the height/launch and spin I wanted. Now I can get that but on the stiffness I want. Let’s just see if the blue 6.0 stiffness equals the new red 6.0
This is a really interesting shaft. Add another to the ever growing ponder list @bsbmike

Do you worry about swing weight also?

If you mean swing weight you can get a finished club in D1-D2 with either. If you mean shaft weight, I prefer less than 120 but the 6.0 .

Right on! Yeah I always worry going lighter weight in shaft as it also affects swing weight! But thanks for clarifying that you can reach D1-D2 with these.
My first iron fitting in 2015 put me in PX 5.5 so these intrigue me. And it’s cool to see the lineup expanded.
Interesting. I’ve played the classic blue in a number of irons over the last decade and is one I really get along with. I’m going to need to try these at some point.
Same weight as PX IO shaft in 6.0 at least. I wonder how they differ
Likely a dumb question, but how do these differ from the IO?
I have always liked the feel of Project X steel shafts. Like the sounds of these quite a lot. Little more launch and a bit more spin sounds nice and i like the 110g weight for the 6.0s.
