Golf clubs can be quite expensive, and while some people appreciate them as genuine art, no one likes the thought of potentially damaging one. It’s an uncomfortable feeling to stand over a shot knowing it could result in a ding, dent, or significant scratch on the sole or elsewhere. Golfers in desert areas often face this dilemma more than others; a loose drive could lead to a tough decision: take a drop or risk getting “desert rash” on your hybrid, iron, or wedge.

Headquartered in Scottsdale, Arizona, PXG is familiar with these challenging situations. Today, they are excited to announce the launch of a new club specifically designed to tackle rocky lies, the PXG Desert Golf Club. This club is built to help golfers confidently navigate even the harshest conditions.
“We’ve all been there—you hit a stray drive, and suddenly you’re battling against the elements to salvage your shot,” PXG founder and desert dweller Bob Parsons said. “The PXG Desert Golf Club is your ‘Lord help me or God save the King’ recovery tool so you can play it where it lies without thinking twice about damaging your favorite club.”
As one might expect, a club of this nature has some unique features. The Desert Club measures 36.5 inches in length, comparable to an 8-iron. Unlike an 8-iron, it has a head with 44° of loft, similar to a modern pitching wedge. This combination of extra length, loft, and a lighter head weight allows golfers to take a full swing or utilize the versatile sole for pitch shots to get the ball back to the short grass.

Length and lie aside, arguably the most important aspect of this release is the decision to use raw-hardened 17-4 stainless steel. PXG typically uses 431 stainless steel or 860 carbon steel for their regular range of irons and wedges. Both materials are common in the industry and are known for being softer than the 17-4 steel used here. This change in materials boosts the durability of the Desert Club, allowing it to withstand the challenges posed by unforgiving areas like the desert or cart paths.

PXG has carved out a unique design language over the years, particularly evident in their 0311 irons. They’ve decided to go off the beaten path with the Desert Club, which is fitting since that’s where this club is meant to be used. While many of their releases feature a chrome or black DLC finish, the Desert Club gets a rust-resistant raw finish.
In terms of design elements, the cavity of the club features several stamped cacti, reinforcing the connection to the desert theme. A skull takes center stage in the cavity, which replaces the large circular weight typically seen in PXG irons. The presence of the skull brings to mind the imagery of the Punisher, which is entirely appropriate given that this club is built to withstand the punishment of challenging conditions.

The PXG Desert Club is priced at $99.99 and serves as a great “just in case” golf club. It’s an ideal light-hearted gift for a golfing friend who struggles to keep their ball on the fairway. Think of it as an insurance policy; you might not want to use it, but you’ll be thankful to have it in your bag when needed.
PXG’s Desert Golf Club is available for purchase today at www.pxg.com.

Great write up. Thanks. Interesting for a number of reasons. I guess it replaces one’s ??
Or, is it an emergency 15th?
This is a fun idea. I like it when OEMs go outside the beaten path.
Curious how this is received and what sales might be. Has its place in market.
Not anything I need to worry about but nice to see them come up with this unique idea and to price it affordably.
It’s kinda like a chipper that’s not really a chipper that is designed to destroy whatever it hits. I’m really tempted to buy this.
I think this is kinda cool, and would definitely have a use based on some of the experiences I had in Arizona.
With that length and loft, I could see using this when you need extra height on a wedge shot too. They probably won’t sell a ton, but it’s a cool idea.
I spend quite a bit of time without 14 clubs in the bag, so a specialty club like this always resonates a little more for me. I don’t really have the use case with where I play, but it’s a great idea. Looks pretty cool.
I gotta admit, I actually think this is pretty damn cool.
It’s a fun idea for our desert dwelling golf brethren.
I like this, and at $100 bucks it’s reasonable too. Not something I deal with, but if I did play desert golf I’d want something like this so I don’t mess up my gamer set.

Yeah, I’d likely be all over this if I played a lot of desert golf.
It’s a pretty reasonable price, and I definitely have a use case for it. Niche product, but good idea by PXG.
if im ever in a position or lie that could damage my club, im not hitting it
At first i thought this was a pretty dumb idea, but as i read i found myself saying i could see the use for this for some people. Then when i saw it was only $99 i was convinced its a cool and unique idea. I dont know if there will be a ton of interest since im not a desert golfer but i think people would pay $99 for it and carry as a 15th club
Not anything that fits my needs, but I’m actually impressed with PXG thinking a bit outside the box and bringing something at a reasonable price that fits a small niche need. Good on them.
This club could really come in handy at most of the courses I play here in AZ!! Clever idea by PXG!
Thinking about this a little more, because the idea of a specialty club like this taking a bag spot could be a roadblock for some people.

Personally I wouldn’t care, but I understand others might feel differently.
This is the first thing from PXG that I think is really cool and unique, and its a great price as well for something that will take a beating. I don’t have much use for it here but those that play desert golf may find it useful
I like the potential opportunity it creates for league play. You could allow one of these clubs to be with each foursome or cart that is a de facto 15th club, but it’s always the same club so no one can get any perceived advantage for having an extra
I’ve never been a PXG guy because of the shouty commercials they use to do but I really like the idea of this club. Kudos to them for coming up with this and the price is great too.
1. Often enough that I just play the iron than is called for to get back into position. More than once a round. If you want me to put a number on it.
2. You do you. Just have fun doing it.

A third question would be how many thrift store/garage sale clubs can you get for $100?

Would you consider adding one of these if you just bought a new set of irons?

That’s a good point, though I do think the configuration is pretty versatile with the length and loft. Plus it does look really cool.

This is my same thought exactly, can a $5 old scrappy iron from the local thrift store have the same result?
Agree with everyone this is kind of a quirky and fun idea….It’s basically an 8 iron length with the loft of a PW. I might have gone one down on each club (like, 7 iron length at 40 degrees or something, so you could hit it a bit further.
But it’s an interesting concept. Especially for people who don’t need all 14 clubs

Probably not.
If I were a super soft forged MB player…maybe, but then my need for said club would be reduced.

I think it’s more if you have a full bag of PXG clubs, you might not want to have a spalding 8 iron mixed in with those just on principle.
I would guess that 95% of people who buy this will be current PXG users.

Yea that makes a lot of sense.
Fan of the idea, priced right to go through the ringer.

Yeah, but like @Hawk said, they won’t look as good plus you’ll have to tinker to get the same configuration.
love it, smart and unique.
the almost OL element to the club and PW loft is a perfect pairing. I can recall punching out and having full swing options off rougher terrain. Having this club would have been a good option.

Seems to me that I remember some Dessert Courses allow for a 15th “Rock Club”
Also in some 14 way bags with a Putter Well actually have a spot for the “Rock Club”
I like the concept, curious to see how many get sold.
Some have mentioned it, but I love that they released this. It’s fun, it’s different, and it’s very un-PXG in many ways.
Interesting and at a good price point. I would never buy one, but the use of 17-4 is quite a bit more “valuable” than the softer carbon alloys, simply from a material value point of view.

I agree with this, but I do think they did some pretty unique things to make this a bit different.
You know if this thing didn’t look so damn good I would just scoff at the idea. :ROFLMAO:
I have had my King Tour CB’s in the bag for a year and half and while there are some scrapes and blemishes I wouldn’t say they are beat to hell. I don’t need this type of club for the desert shots I hit. As far as a 15th club, I won’t do it but I get those that would.
I love this release, have no use for it personally, but absolutely love this from PXG.
If I lived or played a lot of desert golf I could see me adding this to the mix for sure, maybe even as one of the 14 in a competition
This is a really cool release. I will definitely give it a look at that price point.

This is cool and for 99 bucks you can get an MMT or recoil shaft! This is full ponder mode right now.

1-not every round but then some rounds i seem to be in this situation multiple times. Some are just not playable but plenty of them are. This would be a cool club to have for that.
2-I do not care at all it really is not a big deal for that situation.
My 56 & 59 get beat regardless- my new 59 got a huge rock gouge 1st week i owned it, from our bunkers.
I’ll pass

1. It’s course dependent to me: most of the time I’m okay, but certain courses (I’m looking at you, Starr Pass!) are nothing but desert trouble!
2. No problem with it at all.

This is pretty awesome, and brilliant!
1. 1-3x per round normally.
2. No. No.
This is really fun. Feels like a cool nod to them being from Arizona.
Ok this is pretty cool. The courses here at home don’t have enough situations where I would be able to justify meeting this. Every time I head over to Arizona, I absolutely wish I had this in the bag.
