Rising Stars – What’s in the bag?

The PGA Tour is officially in action and THP has some great coverage planned for the 2013 season. We thought it would be fun to profile a few players that are making a splash on the professional tours, so our readers can get a little insight about them and what gear they are playing.

Jonas Blixt

Jonas Blixt

Blixt, a member of Cobra Golf’s stable of young rising stars, had a breakthrough season as a PGA Tour rookie. In 21 events he recorded five top-ten finishes, culminating in his first professional victory at the Frys.com Open. Blixt, who is 29 years old, is a native of Sweden and attended college at Florida State in the US. He can be exciting to watch since he tends to make quite a few birdies and eagles. In addition, he possesses an excellent short game. Blixt spent part of the2012 season hampered by injury, which likely held him back from Rookie of the Year honors, but the future looks very bright for him.

Here is what Blixt is carrying in his Cobra staff bag:

  • ZL Encore 8.5 (black), neutral  (UST Attas T2 6X shaft)
  • TaylorMade RocketBallz 3 Wood (Graphite Design Tour AD)
  • Baffler T-Rail 2  (Graphite Design DI 105X)
  • S3 Pro MB 3-P  (DG X100)
  • Callaway X Forged (52°, 60°)
  • Yes! Donna
  • Titleist Pro V1x

As the year progresses, it will be interesting to see if Blixt incorporates some of the new Cobra MyFly technology into his set up, though it’s hard to expect him to change a bag that is obviously working well for him. Stay tuned to the Tour Spot for updates in Blixt’s bag.

Billy Hurley III

Billy Hurley III

THP last wrote about Hurley in 2011, and if you haven’t heard about him, this article is a good story to check out. As a PGA Tour rookie, Hurley had an up and down season in 2012, with a couple top ten showings at the AT&T National and the John Deere Classic. In the end, he was 151st on the money list, narrowly missing conditional status on the PGA Tour for 2013. He has a spot in the Web.com Tour secured for the season and we can’t help but wish him the best.

Here’s what was most recently in Hurley’s Bridgestone bag.

  • Taylor Made R11S 9.0 (GD Tour AD di-6X)
  • Taylor Made RBZ 15 Degree (GD Tour AD di-7X)
  • Taylor Made Rescue #2 17 Degree (Fuji Motore F1 80X)
  • Bridgestone Golf J40 Cavity Back Irons 3-9 (TT DG X100)
  • Bridgestone Golf J40 (blk) 48, 54 and 60 Degree Wedges (TT DG S400)
  • Bridgestone Golf TOUR B330-S golf ball
  • Odyssey White Hot Putter

Charlie Beljan

Charlie Beljan

Many may remember the scene at the 2012 Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Classic, the site of Beljan’s first victory on the PGA Tour. While suffering from debilitating panic attacks, Beljan carded a final round 69 to win the event by two strokes. Another player in his late 20’s, Beljan is a true bomber of the golf ball, finishing the 2012 season 2nd in driving distance (311.9 yards) among his PGA Tour peers. Prior to earning his PGA Tour card, he won 8 times on the Gateway Tour, so he definitely knows how to finish. Beljan has a ton of enthusiasm for both his sponsor and his profession. Look for more good things out of this rising star.

Here’s what Beljan carries in his Cleveland staff bag:

  • Cleveland Classic 290 10.5° (Miyazaki B Asha 5)
  • 588 MT irons (2&3)
  • 588 Forged MB irons (4-PW)
  • 588 RTX CB (52, 56, 60)
  • Scotty Cameron Go-Lo
  • Srixon Z-Star Prototype

Up until the Tournament of Champions, Beljan was carrying two hybrids, but it appears that he has opted to incorporate two of Cleveland’s new 588 MT irons in their place. Amateurs will also have the chance to build a combination set out of the 588 line, so it’s nice to see Beljan embracing the idea. We’ll keep an eye on what changes, if any, Beljan makes to his 2013 set up.
