Limited edition putter releases always make for a good time, but when they are dropping from Scotty Cameron, they tend to hit a little differently.
Today, it is the Phantom lineup’s turn to step-up and step-out. Not only are we getting four different head shapes in the Tour Black PVD, but each and every model showcases Tour driven alterations to the standard versions.
Scotty Cameron Phantom Black Putters
When the Cameron crew says that a release is “Tour Inspired”, rest assured they absolutely mean it. Four different head shapes are present, but each one is showcasing modifications which have been requested on putters for their Tour staff. Ranging from shapes, alignments, shaft configurations, modern head weights, and even the mean chain link face milling, the Phantom Black special release is destined to turn heads.
“With last year’s B3 Triple Black Design LTD putters, we re-introduced to dedicated golfers our Tour Black finish on some very desirable blades. This time, we focused on the mallets, notably the Phantom models we most commonly modify for tour players. With the Phantom Black 5.5, 7, 9.2R and 11 mallets, we have created four new models that incorporate specific feedback from the pros related to alignment, overall shape, neck configuration and, of course, the Tour Black finish.”
– Scotty Cameron

The black finish is actually a PVD application onto the 303 stainless steel putter heads which reduces glare and visually looks mean in the best way. Additionally, any 6061 aircraft grade aluminum sole plates and components showcase a misted anodized black, so the entire design blends seamlessly.

“With the Phantom Black putters, we’ve created new models based on the prototype Phantom designs we developed for tour players. For example, the double bend shaft used on the Phantom Black 7 was crafted specifically for a player looking to emulate the way a plumbing neck provides alignment. Many players have ordered the Phantom 5.5 and Phantom 11 in our Tour Black finish with different alignment configurations. And the Phantom Black 9.2R is a completely new model with a custom plumbing neck and rounded contours. Each Phantom Black putter is a response to a tour player request. From the Tour Black finish to new sight line configurations and neck designs, we’re excited to offer these tour-inspired models to dedicated golfers looking for a tour-like mallet putter.”
– Austie Rollinson – Senior Director of Putter R&D

As mentioned, each putter also features the Scotty Cameron “Chain-Link milling”. This actually reduces the surface area coming into contact with the ball, which if you have read our Education Zone piece on putter milling here, then you will know it creates a softer/lower sound at impact.
Each model has a unique look, and traits specific just to that head shape:
Phantom Black 5.5

This is Scotty Cameron’s mid-mallet “wing back” head shape. It features a slant neck and custom single topline and dual flange alignment setup. This particular head will be offered in RH and LH.
Phantom Black 7

As the number gives away, this is the Scotty Cameron take on the most popular fanged mallet design of all time. Not only does this version feature a single topline and dual flange alignment, but the double bend shaft was designed with a Tour player to mimic a plumber neck style visual setup.
Phantom Black 9.2R

One of the absolute most unique mallet shapes we have seen yet in the Cameron catalog, the 9.2R not only has a custom short single topline but also much more rounded overall features. The head also uses an “009-inspired” plumbing neck that is shorter and placed more to the heel side of the putter.
Phantom Black 11

Driven by its multi-material design elements, the 11 is a perimeter weighted shape which is a bit longer heel to toe and operates with a high MOI. This not only has a mid-bend shaft setup, but also a unique elongated parallel site-line.
The Details

The Phantom Black putters will be available worldwide starting 7/25/25. Each putter will come paired with a urethane coated Matador grip as well as special release headcover which showcase the Chain-Link Milling pattern. Pricing on the four putters will come in at $725.

9.2 looks really cool. I’m glad the chain link milling keeps showing up
Got me a 7 secured! Super excited for a double bend Scotty. Don’t mind the single bend shaft but don’t love it either. Yet another Odyssey influence seeping in.
We will be with the Scotty team next week at their R&D lab

I’m very curious what Austie is cooking up next.
At that price, I will never own one!

Put the 9.2 in play today and had one of my better putting rounds of the year. I’ve been on a string of solid rounds 3-5 over where making more putts would have let me get around or even under par.

The heads look fantastic, but I think an opportunity was missed by not using black shafts.

And put Batman on at least the one. Huge mistake.
The more I see it, the more I like that 9.2.
The 9.2R caught my eye right away. Went to a couple golf shops in my area and finally found one, rolled it for a few, and it is now in the bag. Once winter gets here, I’m going to explore black shaft options and even some paint fill to black it out.

Legit the only think stopping me from figuring out what to sell to get one is the Golo 6.2.

I know. I do to. I am just really cheap in that segment of the market.

In the segment that golfers use the most in a round. Hahaha
yep. lol. I know I am the odd one. here. :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:
Grabbed a lefty 5.5. Haven’t rolled yet on a course but first impression is it is a work of art. Love the face milling as well as the new alignment. I rolled the original 5.5 and could never feel confident with setup as none of the lines seemed to be parallel with the direction; they have done a great job there. My one gripe is the terrible cover! It looks great but Velcro with double flaps is psychotic in this day and age. Otherwise thrilled and can’t wait to get it out this week!

I was too late to grab one but there’s one on ebay from Canada… I love my 5.5…but am leaning toward grabbing a 7.5 for no real reason…I’m in a putter phase lately….
Just got my P9 out of the local pro shop.. A mere 7 putt demo and was sold. They threw in 2 rounds and a free cart to seal the deal..
Then boom this drop’s, yep yep… black shaft would have been nice..
question is.. should I just spring for a quality 17 dollar can of Krylon flat or semi gloss black spray paint and clear coat and go all in on a custom. Getto RAT golf’n with a combat ready snotty’Skotty… who would know…
shaft and head.. LET’S GO.. BET ME…
and yes the headcover is Velcro… and I also was a little miffed about that but it’s got a satisfying sound when your opening it.. or have I just gotten used to it.
I’m going to add my own mini neo dyne magnet some place on it as a handy retrieve. Great suggestion.

These are gorgoues. That 9.2 in particular is a beauty. Very interesting to see them use the Matador on these as I don’t think that’s ever been an OTR option, even in a LE before. And love that the chain-link is present. Great write up @Jman

Well said… the 9 is a 10!! Amazing sound too.
That limited edition looks nicer than the original. Wish they release a bolder edition too
I finally broke down and bought a Phantom 9.2R. I love the looks and rolled one in a store and it felt great. First round in the bag last night and the honeymoon is on! I made 4 long putts and shot my first under par round in a long time. (3 birdies, 2 bogies 71). For now, this kicks the Lab Oz 1i HS out of the bag. The thing I noticed most is that it puts me on line incredibly well. Distance control was as good as anything I’ve ever used. Hopefully it continues…
