Shot Scope’s impact on the distance measuring and performance tracking aspects of golf is well documented at THP. By providing stylish and feature-packed products without the hassle of subscription fees, the company has managed to secure a substantial customer base in a relatively short time. Another way they’ve done that is by creating a diverse product line that is accessible to an extremely wide range of golfers. For example, if you’re not interested in their performance tracking features like those offered in the X5 watch, they offer the very affordable G5 that only tracks distance. If you don’t wear a watch but want to track performance, they offer solutions like Connex, tags that interact with a mobile app, or the Pro LX+, a laser rangefinder with integrated tracking.
Somehow though, Shot Scope has managed to recognize a hole in their lineup and is seeking to fill it. Their new V5 Golf Watch may outwardly bear strong resemblance to the flagship X5 watch, but it occupies a space in both pricing and design that may appeal more to you. Read more to find out why.
Shot Scope V5 Golf Watch at a Glance
At $249.99, Shot Scope’s V5 Golf Watch features similar styling, the same advanced distance measuring and performance tracking capabilities, and lack of subscription fees as the X5 at a lower price. The key differences between the two are 1) the V5 scraps the touch screen in favor of a button-based navigation system and 2) the V5 comes with an ABS bezel instead of ceramic.
V5 Golf Watch Features

The V5 is a full-feature Shot Scope product, meaning it offers everything we’ve come to expect from the company when it comes to GPS and performance tracking. At its most basic level, it provides F/M/B distances to the green on over 36,000 golf courses, but most should already know Shot Scope’s distance-measuring capabilities go far beyond that. Each hazard has been mapped with both front edge and carry numbers as well as predetermined layup distances so you can plan an attack to best suit your game. Even more exciting is the recent addition of Full Hole Maps, which gives a great visual of the hole’s layout and allows the user to select distances to any spot between tee and green with the V5’s buttons.

Green View and Pin Placement brings the golfer’s focus to the micro level. By seeing the shape of the green up close, you can eliminate some of the visual confusion that course designers are so good at creating. While the view from the ground may make it appear you only have a sliver of green to aim for, an overhead view may be able to assure you there is plenty of room to work with. Pin Placement narrows this down even more, as you can place a marker where the pin is located and obtain a more accurate number.
GPS is only one part of what the V5 offers. In addition, it supplies robust performance tracking capabilities to help you improve your golf game. It all starts with the 16 2nd Generation shot tracking tags included with each watch. You simply screw the RFID tags, which are embedded with smart GPS chips, into the butt-end of your club’s grip and they seamlessly interact with the V5’s software to not only record each shot, but also mark where you took it from. This includes putts, which can be marked manually or with the Pin Collect feature. No internet connection, phone, or tagging is required during gameplay, limiting unnecessary distractions.

Post round, a simple upload unlocks over 100 available statistics to analyze on either the Shot Scope mobile app (available for both iOS and Android) or desktop Dashboard. Data points like shots gained, average and performance distances, fairway and green accuracy, and more, give a clear picture of what aspects of your game may need more attention. In addition, add-on features like MyStrategy, which takes your saved data and allows you to impose it on any course you are playing in the future, and Shot Scope Academy, a service that instructors and coaches can use to analyze student data, put your statistics to even more use. Of course, it’s always worth repeating that all of this comes with no additional fees, making the V5 a one-time purchase that can serve the user for years to come.
Customization and Other Features

Shot Scope has always recognized its users’ desire to have a wearable that is both stylish and customizable. For example, the G5 GPS watch can be personalized with several differently colored bands. The V5 doesn’t have that option yet, but it does offer five different color themes so you can make it your own. As you might expect, we are partial to green, but if you go with a different look, we won’t hold it against you.

While it’s not a full-fledged smart watch, the V5 can be worn off the golf course as a normal watch with some add-on abilities. The hardened glass lens and 64 color, 240×240 pixel display will be visible in sunlight and the silicone strap is quite comfortable for extended wear. Speaking of extended wear, the V5’s battery is capable of finishing 2+ rounds of golf in GPS mode, so you should be able to squeak in another round if you decide to skip mowing the lawn in favor of 36 holes.
Expanding on customization, it has a variety of watch faces to choose from. In addition, an onboard step counter can help the fitness-minded golfer keep track of the wellness-benefits offered by walking both on the course and off.

Great write-up @Hawk . I am going to have to replace my current almost 10 year old Garmin soon and what I don’t like about it is the face gets scratched and is not perfectly clear. I am looking forward to hearing how the ABS bezel performs. I can do without touchscreen although nice feature but screen clarity is a must.
Great write up @Hawk . I might like this one over the X5 that I have.
The touchscreen isn’t the best in the world, especially when it comes to colder or wetter weather so I don’t think it would be that much of a loss. I’m also curious to see how it performs with the slightly different style. I don’t think I would trade in my current ShotScope for it, it doesn’t have enough difference to the table but for those that do not have a watch and want one, it is a great option.
I’m torn as I don’t necessarily need the touch screen aspect that my X5 provides today. If they offer reduced pricing like they did when the X5 came out for current customers I may make the jump. 36+ hole battery life is a plus although I typically play 36 holes in a day anymore.
The new face material is interesting.
Ponder mode engaged!!!
Man I love this idea. I wish this would have come out alongside the X5
The touchscreen has been a bit of a frustration for me to the point I don’t wear it to track as often anymore.
Might have to ponder grabbing one of these to get back to buttons versus touchscreen

I find myself using the buttons on the X5 to scroll through the menu versus the touchscreen. Might be time to just go to the V5.
Did they change the configuration on the wristband though is the question?

Ya for me it’s the accidental stuff and how wonky it gets if it gets a little sweat or rain on it.
Just give me simple buttons please haha

Should have a sample in hand here before too long, so stay tuned.
Great write up and another great option for those that don’t want or need a touch screen.
Interesting product. Hope to be able to see it in hand at the data experience in a few weeks. The touchscreen is a really nice feature but it is definitely clunky. The styling looks as good as the X5

I’ve had a few of those as well with the touch screen so this option is exciting.
Now what color to get….?
@Hawk – great write up, is the battery life different from the X5 with the 36 hole comment? (I’ve never done 36 a day with my X5 yet ?)

I think we can tell what color options are available from the product video! That was well done.
Just reading some of the details on the website and it’s nice that the step tracking feature works both in and off the course. Thats a nice perk imho.

Will definitely have an eye on that. I tended to use the buttons more often on the X5 as it is, so it should be an easy transition.
I’m pretty torn on whether to make the transition or not and make the investment just for non touchscreen and improved battery life…
Is the difference between this and x5 just the touchscreen?

Yea that’s the real bonus here imo. You can grab another segment of consumers. Personally, I really like the look and feel of the ceramic bezel on the X5, but options are good.
Nice write up. This looks like an excellent addition to the Shotscope lineup. If i didn’t already have the X5 i’d definitely upgrade the V3 to the V5. Styling looks nice, the ability to adjust the color for the yardage display is cool.
Great price point and stylish, sort of.
Went from a SkyCaddie which was extremely accurate but got tired of continuous yearly fees. Picked up a Garmin S40 when they came out and enjoyed compactness of a Golf Watch vs Phone. It has many short comings that the V takes care of at a great price. This might be my Father’s Day present to myself.
P.S. as for Ceramic, I love the solid feel of it. I have it on the Controls on the Car after testing one without Ceramic.
I don’t mind ABS on a watch which will make it lighter and less chance of it rotating on my Wrist.
Man, saw this, saw the email. temptation high but my G3 continues to give me numbers i want. debating if the form factor and hole/green pictures are worth the upgrade.
Nice write up @Hawk it might be time to jump into the shot tracking for myself. Will be following along once you get this in Hand. Long battery life and a step counter are some nice features to have in the new model.
Lowering the price point is a good move by SS.

Same. I don’t think its worth the $180 for me. The battery always lasts a full round for me so that not an issue for me
I’ve been looking forward to this release, it looks good! Buttons instead of touch screen is a nice move, this could be the one that makes me jump on a Shot Scope.

I saw a lot of value in the hole maps while on a newish course over the weekend. If you rotate your golf a bit or play a lot of travel golf it might be worth it.

TBH – I rarely use the touchscreen on my X5, so in theory, I’m using it like a V5.
This V5 unit feels like SS got feedback that the X5 was too complicated, and too much of jump from V3.
I’d rather have the V5 however at $180, just don’t think I’ll “Downgrade”
I like the button only option since with rain or sweat, the touch screen can act up a little. The color options on the screen is nice, but having a few band color options (maybe in the future?) would be a bonus. Still, if I were to need a replacement of my X5, I’d go V5.
Thank you @Hawk for the write up. I’ve been kicking around the idea of a new watch and specifically I have been looking at ShotScope as an alternative to the Apple Watch I have now. The X5 was on my radar, but given how little I play this might be the better option for me. I need to dig into the comparisons between the two and see which one makes the most sense.
Call me intrigued. I didn’t like the kludgy X5 and all the issues I had with it, so I returned it. Still have my V3. I’ll look forward to the feedback on this one.

the looks and touchscreen will keep the X5 on my wrist, but the $300 tag might be a lot for some.
Kudos for ShotScope team listening to some feedback on the Touchscreen issues and battery life and updating the model. They always have the ear on the market to make sure their tools are the best.
This looks really intriguing. To me this is a version I can use in misty conditions as the buttons allow for easier control in those conditions.
I can’t wait to really dive into the differences at the Data Experience in a month or so.
My V3 has been rock solid but I couldn’t resist the temptation to get this one at $180. Looking forward to using it all summer!
My X5 performs practically flawlessly, and I even use it unlocked. I do still have my V3 and use it when it is cold, and I have to wear certain clothing, long sleeves that have loose cuffs that I can’t keep up on my arm above the watch. Because, even in “locked” mode, the Pin Collect screen is unlocked, and I have had sleeves run across it, or me swiping across the watch to get at the screen affect the number of putts captured or record the wrong hole location.
I don’t use a lot of the features on the X5 as it is, such as the green view, whole hole view, scoring, pin reminder, etc., and only very rarely look at other features such as distance to/over hazards, layup yardages or distance of the last shot. I don’t play in the rain, so the touch screen isn’t an issue for me under those conditions, either. I am happy to stick with what I have and what I know works well for me.
I applaud them offering that huge discount for current Shot Scope users! They didn’t have to do that!
This is a hard ponder. Need to replace my Apple Watch and also need to add tracking. Was considering a Garmin for the ability to track shots without needing tags, but the amount of data seems much better with Shot Scope. And while I can get a set of arccos sensors for free, not really a fan of the subscription model.
This might be the answer if battery life holds up. Or an X5 if battery seems to be the same as I think I could get an ex-display X5 for less than a V5. Hmmm
I’m very tempted to get this with the discount but I just bought an X5 2 weeks ago. I listened to them talk about the V5 on a podcast but was under the impression that it would be missing some of the features of the X5. Kind of disappointed I didn’t wait now
Does the V5 have the same charging port/system as the X5, or did they improve/update it?
Guess I’m going to give the watch version a try over the H4….
Great write up! The move to buttons from touchscreen makes sense to me. Touchscreen, especially when rain, sweat, moisture is at play, is pretty tough to do. Not necessarily from SS’s perspective, but whoever makes the underlying touch sensors. I’m still using my V3, but the one thing I’ve been missing is the hole layout and always go to my phone for that piece. Definitely need to do some pondering on this.
dang, with the discount that’s kind of tempting. I like the X5 but the touchscreen gives me fits sometimes. I almost feel like my V3 was easier to use.

I was thinking the same thing. Touchscreen on the X5 isn’t really a selling point, I’d way rather have the buttons.
Great write up, this is shut a great piece of gear for any golfer and the price point is great as well.
