Last week we got together as a staff and made predictions for The Masters. We were tasked with choosing the winner, as well as a dark horse, someone not ranked in the top 25 that we thought had a chance to grab the green jacket.
Of course directly after the graphic was made, Jordan Spieth won at the Valero, so dark horse might not be the best descriptor.
Crazy to think that none of the staff made the same predictions.
Who do you agree with? Who do you think is way off base? Give us your thoughts below.
He’s been inside the top 10 3 of the last 4 as well. I know he’s not hot but I had a feeling.
Haha it was not a coordinated effort. Everyone sent their picks blind and thats what we got.
@ddec with a champ pick. Not sure about that guy.. he has played terrible this year.
I like the @Canadan finau pick.
surprised no one took Tommy Fleetwood. @Jman poulter pick is a serious dark horse pick but I could see Poults top 10’ing.
On the flip side, I think @jdtox has missed the mark completely. Rors has shown much lately and Brendon Todd hasn’t shown anything in any major that I am aware of.
so the Champ pick. Needed to be outside the top 50 and to be honest, I’m not thrilled on any of those really. Wanted to stay away from past champions, and even though he was above 50 when we picked, I didn’t view Spieth in that way. I’m taking a big flier on a guy who performed pretty well in his first Masters, and was in the mix at the PGA last year. He has the length to make this course considerably shorter than it will play for many. No doubt he has really struggled with the putter, but for a darkhorse style, a hot putter could get him in the mix. Do I expect him to win….hell no. But I’ve already used up my Jimmy Walker magic for that 2016 PGA.
Who would you pick outside of the top 50 in the OWGR rankings? Todd doesn’t have distance but is a #1 in driving accuracy and a decent putter. In reality does anyone expect a dark horse to win?
exactly and when was the last time a player outside the top 50 won the masters?
I hate him just enough I could see him winning in RC year.
Haha see my edit above
That would make a pretty good statement.
Overall i see @jdtox coming with some Canadian Conners love later on in the thread, but I like @MWard and @JB picks…
oh man, please don’t let us start sharing a brain haha
While I don’t expect anyone outside of the top 50 to win, my first choice in that category would be Bubba. He’s streaky I know but he has already felt the pressure of The Masters and his 2 green jackets show that he can handle both the course and the pressure. JMHO
Thats fair and no question bubba has played well there previously. Course history definitely plays a factor.
Collin has the ability to, but he also doesn’t know this course left from right yet.
Yeah agreed. This is a hallowed ground that has no replacement for experience. But he has the tools. Augusta rewards great iron play and precise shots into greens.

Over "Top Gun Phil"

? @MWard
I’m hoping you can get that 2016 magic going again!
If I would have scrolled past the top 100 I maybe would have picked Phil as a choice instead of Todd
Touche! ?
Criteria was outside top 50 or thats what we thought haha and he’s currently 30th.
Here is my selection for this year…..let me know what you think.
Outside of the norms Im big on Scheffler and like the Wolf inclusion.
Ha ha. Ok that make more sense.
I think we’re going back to Angel Cabrera in 2009. Ranked 69 before. The win shot him up to 18th.
Surprised no love for Westy
Looking into the last winner outside the top 50 a few posts back, I was reminded that Danny Willet was ranked 16 when he won. Seemed to come out of nowhere.
and it’s not like he was a slouch. Always seemed to be involved in the majors and had a US Open title to his name.
He’s got one Green Jacket, yeah? What’s one more?
1) JB
2) MWard
3) Jman
4) Jdtox
5) Ddec
6) Canadan
True. And it didn’t look like too rough a stretch at the end of 2008 dropping him down either. Probably the US Open Win points dropping off.
Though he did MC Bay Hill and Houston Open in back-to-back weeks before winning his green jacket.
Bingo.
Wardy with the solid choices followed by @Canadan. I’d love to see Tony win one, but the ?? in me would be quite smitten with a Connors victory
That said @Canadan and @MWard tie.
@Jman losses.
Didn’t know we were supposed to pick to win THP’ers over
100% praying I curse them.
You do you buddy!
