Straight from the Lab: Titleist Releases EXP 01 Golf Balls

Very interesting release coming from Titleist that they are calling the EXP•01. It is important to note that this is not necessarily a new ball moving forward, but part of the entire process that they are calling the EXP Project.

“The EXP Project invites golfers into the early stages of our R&D process, and allows us to broadly test experimental materials, constructions and processes that could be integrated into any segment of our golf ball line,” said Michael Mahoney, Vice President, Titleist Golf Ball Marketing. “EXP•01 is truly an exploratory product and there’s no better way to evaluate our progress than getting it into the hands of dedicated golfers.

With the vast amount of research and development employees working at Titleist on new golf balls (there are more than 75), lots of ideas and prototypes end up on the cutting room floor so to speak. The EXP•01 could actually end up as one of those cuts or it could end up as the next ball you call your favorite. They are making this ball available one time only. According to Titleist, the development will continue on EXP•01 today, when a limited run of these balls will be made available to golf shops in the US and Canada, as well as available on their own website while supplies last.

Why? Really, why not? What better way to test than to put the product in the hands of golfers and let them tell you what is right and wrong with it? Player testing has been around for as long as golf balls have been manufactured…Just not necessarily with the public involved. With the current way golf is discussed online through places like the THP Forum and through social media, what better way to get feedback, since it is already happening already.

The EXP•01 Golf Ball
Let’s break down what we know about the ball in three parts. Cover, Core and Aerodynamics. First up is the cover and that is the most discussed as it relates to golf balls. Titleist calls this a MTR Developmental Cover System that is Spin Enhancing in the short game.

Moving further inside the EXP•01 we have exactly what you expect to hear. High speed core construction with a specialized casing layer to deliver low spin off the tee for great distance and tight dispersion. There is not a lot of info given on compression yet, but we will run it through our THP Club Lab soon and follow up with that info in the forum thread soon.

Finally we move to aerodynamics, which means dimple design. The EXP•01 features 346 dimples and when looking at the current Pro V1 and Pro V1x that are featuring 352 and 328 comparatively and also the AVX with 352 and Tour Soft with 342, you see it doesn’t match up with any of those designs.
