Back in February Srixon added to the ZX lineup with the new ZX4 irons. The ZX5 and ZX7 had been announced a few months prior, but rumors were swirling about the new hollow body style that would accompany them.
Today we are in the THP Tech Studio for another episode of TESTED! Where you see the swings and get a full breakdown of the data on this new set of Srixon irons. The video below starts off with some technology talk, then hops into the hitting bay for some swings. Finally, we will walk you through the information that the Foresight GCQuad presented and give you some final thoughts.
This episode is full of information and data. Can forgiveness and distance meet performance and control? What about feel and sound and how it relates to this style compared to the previous Srixon iron releases in the lineup?
After watching the THP TV video above, what are your initial thoughts on the Srixon ZX4 irons? Is it a set that would fit your game either fully or partially?
For more information on this specific set or anything from the Srixon ZX line of clubs, balls or accessories check out their website at www.srixon.com.
Played hollow body in the last few sets, and I do wish they had better sound and feel, but I also understand the construction doesn’t lend it to that. With that said, the hollow body that gives you distance, tight dispersion, and forgiveness, even in the sound/feel profile isn’t perfect, is definitely something I can and would play.
@Canadan you said it was a great compliment to the rest of the lineup, but do you see any issues with gapping based on the difference in design and intended performance from the ZX4 to the ZX5 and/or ZX7? Did you happen to hit the ZX4 back to back with the ZX5 or ZX7?
V-sole is fantastic! It just works from so many lies that you see on the course.
The whole package sounds very attractive.
Finally, Srixon bought Cleveland Golf (I believe), so this design the entire line was that by any chance a collaboration between designers or just an evolution of previous Srixon designs/tech?
Thanks Dan – and JB great show.
There are some really deep dives on VT Sole throughout THP and the different product release items. But next time we are with their R&D team we can have them go into more depth.
Srixon and Cleveland R&D is one and the same (generally speaking) and has been for a number of years. The head of design in the US is Jeff Brunski, who has been on the Off Course Podcast as well as THP TV discussing their products.
Thanks – I was asking as I had not considered any of the Srixon line in recent years, I had believed they were predominantly players clubs. This ZX4 is quite attractive in that regard, it has all the latest tech and still looks the part – so to speak.
I wonder – have you all considered a show on the similarities and/or differences of the hollow body design clubs? Now that everyone (sort of) has a model in their lineup, I think it might be interesting to see how they perform compared to each other – maybe that’s just me.
Not @Canadan , but I have been in the Tech Studio and hit all of the ZX irons side by side.
The ZX line was designed to combo & gap, Noelle talks extensively about gapping on an episode of The Off Course podcast.
The ZX4 is probably in the 4 and 5 iron spot if you are combining a bag.
Thanks. I know it was talked about with the ZX5/7, but couldn’t remember hearing about the ZX4 and how it would combo. They would definitely be in the 4 and 5i spots in the bag if I was looking at new Srixon irons.
You would have to ask yourself what is the reason for the combo? Is there an issue in the scoring clubs of the ZX4 for that golfer?
It would work … in fact if I would have went with Srixon, I was pondering that same set up.
I usually shoot in the mid to low 80’s. Previously played a Srixon 565 (4-6i)/765 (7-PW) set. For the most part I really enjoyed the irons, but always wondered if having the 565 in the 7-PW spot might have been better for my game.
Now that the ZX4 line has come out, I would definitely give strong consideration to playing ZX4 in the 4 and 5i, and the rest ZX5. For me and my swing the added forgiveness in the long irons is a no brainer. But I also have to ask myself, would I be better off playing ZX4 through the entire bag? Just have to hit some and see what works!
I have a ZX4 6i bent 1* strong that I use in the 5i spot. Haven’t hit it much but it seems to fit that spot really well
Not this time around, no. I won’t make any assumptions on gapping but I’m also not afraid of it at all, especially for my game. I typically bend my irons a bit strong to accommodate my dynamic loft, which means I could probably just put the ZX4 in play without altering loft if there happened to be a gapping issue. That in mind, I also wasn’t hitting any crazy numbers with the head, it was just consistent. On the button with my current player irons, I can get the 7 out there pretty good. What I can’t do, is freely hit a 190 yard flag with them haha
maybe even 6 and 7

?
After seeing you stripe that 7i maybe haha. 200 yd 7i are
So we at least agree that it was a ridiculous performance by the ZX4.
I’d say by me too, but I’ve seen me golf recently.
I think that’s key.
A very smart man once told me you should play the most forgiving club you can stand to look down at.
No doubt a combination.
But not sure you, or anyone, could jump out there with just any club and put out numbers like that on the best of days. ZX4 very impressive in that regard.
I’d definitely take consistent with the performance that is offered with this lineup, especially in the long irons. Not only does that allow me to hit more greens, but be more precise off the tee, or lay up approach shots.
They really do. They’re not for me, and I know that, and I still can’t help myself when I see them. Lol I see it, have to grab it, and put it down to look at. For what it is, it’s a good looking club. The whole ZX lineup are lookers.
Good info in the vid guys. I like the Neo stock offering. Real popular with a lot of people who might fit these clubs.
"I watched the video and the tester spoke about a level of consistency not always found in irons of this style or type. Then he said he would consider them in long irons, why not the full set if they are as consistent as it appears in scoring clubs?"
I don’t have a good answer to this – probably should have hit the 9 iron as well to see what it was like.
Likely the only reason I said that is because I am so completely comfortable at the top of my bag of incorporating forgiving long irons and utilities, I was trying to relate to others who likely do the same.
Interesting. Thank you for answering them.
My wallet is getting nervous.

It definitely has a bigger look, but it’s real sharp for what it is. There’s a much bigger change in appearance between the ZX5 and ZX4 as there is between the ZX7 and ZX5 though.
P. S. Club looks barely past parallel at the top! Enjoy that flexibility while you’re young!
I’m pretty numb to offset. It doesn’t make me think twice unless it’s on something different and visible like some of the fairway woods out there.
To the question of relief, I think it has more to do with the VT Sole performing on heavy strikes, not something that might be hitting the leading or trailing edge – so the focus is about centralizing that turf interaction, reducing how much drag is on the turf itself.
@JB might be able to steal an overview look at the two heads as they are in the club lab.
I know a lot has been said already about the top line of the ZX4, but without direct comparison, I really didn’t think much of it in the 7 iron. My regular head right now is either a Mizuno CB or a Callaway X Forged and I didn’t think twice looking down at ZX4 – Thought even less about it as I watched the ball go straight down the pipe repeatedly haha
I’m used to playing GI clubs and don’t mind top line, but like anything there is a tipping point. I love the ZX5 look and think a 4/5 setup in ZX would be similar to my current set…. Besides, these are shiny and who doesn’t like shiny? ?
I think this image is pretty helpful;

I checked their website but didn’t see this comparison… is helpful thanks!
I wanted to see the HMB MP20 from Mizuno, but they only had some 921s and a few woods and hybrids was shocking how little they actually had (right next to a sign saying they are a top 100 fitter of Mizuno stuff). ANYWAY – sorry, the Srixon stuff was right next door. I was able to pick up ogle and waggle the ZX4s they look really nice, And I better understand the sole design (and they had the 5s and 7s too, so more to look at). the ZX 4s they looked different somehow from the picture in this article – they don’t look as ‘deep’ in the cavity, can you tell me what iron was used for the photo? Could be an illusion but it was sort of strange the photo versus the real club – the real club looks considerably meatier – heck maybe it due to the proximity to the 5s and 7s.
