Let your fitter decide and make sure you tell them your concerns. I discussed this with my fitter when were determining what wedge bounce and grind would be best for me.

BTWā¦ā¦TPI is about 33 acres and sits 350ā above sea level. If anyone was wondering.
As Iām starting to decide what to order wedge wise shortly this thread has extra meaning. My SM10 54° 12D is so very good from 30 to say a 100. That spot will be replaced by same spec SM11. Itās my higher lofted 58 that Iām considering changing. Currently itās 8° of bounce and M grind. I could see myself changing that spot up to either and D or maybe S grind. The fact that you all get fit by the experts is freaking amazing.
I need to do some research on the different finishes Vokey offers. I always revert to the basic. Maybe itās time to switch it up with the nickel or the raw. Has anybody made up their mind what theyāre looking to do?

Black looks cool and Iād end up gun bluing the raw anyway. I think the nickel is going to be the call since it should wear better. It looks really good too.

I was considering the nickel as well. From the pictures (looking forward to seeing in person) that is how I was leaning as well!
I have the Nickel and love the low glare finish.

Meh, hadnāt really thought about it. But the average temp in Oceanside, CA for the past 4 years has been about 60* for the first week of February. Bob Vokey moved to the US when he was 25 and his father was machinist.

Are we there yet?
You are going to experience the absolute tightest and purest grass to chip/pitch off of. Honestly at first it was a little intimidating how firm/tight the grass was. But after getting acclimated after a few swings it was amazing. I’ve never seen golf balls spin/zip as much as I was seeing there during the fittings and when we got some free time to play the short course and practice. 30 yard pitch shots with the 54 were hitting 10 feet past and spinning back to the hole. I was floored. The highlight for me was volunteering to hit shots in front of Mr. Vokey. Was so nervous I was going to chunk or blade them but he was so awesome to be with. If I mishit one he would say that wasn’t you… it was the wrong grind for you. During lunch when we had the Q&A with him and Cory we could have stayed and listened all day. At 86 yrs old his passion is still so strong its incredible and infectious.

I think you were one of the few that hit shots out of them during your fitting.
So last night while trying to choke down a Monte Cristo my wife asked āwhat exactly do they do when they fit you for a wedge?ā
āWell baby doll, they look at your swing and your divots and the ball height and spin and where the ball is contacting the face then determine the optimum loft, lie angle, shaft length, shaft flex, shaft weight and grip thatās best for youā¦.ā
(My best guess of how it goes, anyway)
And told her about all the stuff from last yearās Vokey Experience.
Then it hit me, again.
Holy smokes guys. ?

I did not…unfortunately. But I did hit out of one during our loop on the short course.
My short game comes and goes. I put some custom KBS Rev 2 red, white, and blue shafts on them. But went with the stiff flex which are a bit too heavy and that causes a bit of chucking it. I was planning on replacing them this year and then this opportunity came along.
I mainly use my 58 most of my short game and my 54 for bunker shots. Not sure if I am a sweeper or a digger, at least not on purpose.
I am hoping to get some good chipping technics, as I have never really been able to get much spin. That is probably why I stick with the 58 most of tje time.
I'll probably go with something patriotic or represent my Packers š¢.

Yea…definitely probe your fitter on shaft. I think the common guidance is go 10 or so grams heavier from your iron shaft. Mine is a LOT heavier (25 grams), so make sure you bring that up with them.

If you don’t know, just pay attention to the divot you create on wedge shots (particularly short grass / tight lies). For example, off a tight lie, I barely touch the ground, even when I’m trying to get steep on it. This is how the grind will be an important consideration.

My fitter gave me a ton of tips / best practices as he was throwing different lofts / grinds at me. Soak it all in.
Ooooo, homework. Love it!
– How would you rate your current short game? What’s working and what’s not?
Iād say itās halfway decent. I think Iāve been rather obsessed with wedge work for a few years now. Even staking a few pros for some slo mo video at a few tournaments.
Part out of need, part out of itās been then only golf outlet since taking on some big house projects, which are finally finished. Thankfully.
It seems to come and go sometimes and Iāll usually find that itās flipping my hands and not a turn. Iāll spend hours āshooting groupsā at the practice green. Usually around 15-20 yards. My next spot is into 58, 87, and 99 yard flags. No target green so itās anyoneās guess. Struggle with smoothness/tempo when I might second guess that Iāve put the right amount of effort in to the swing and panic flip at impact.
– What is the biggest question you have around wedges?
1. Dialing in bounce and grind. Iām all over the place with my current set up(s). Iāve got a pretty good spread of vintage Vokey, 200 series to SM8. I donāt know why or how, but the 256-14 is my favorite of them all.
2. Shafts, shafts, shafts. Tour 115, S200, S400. I can tell the difference between them all, just donāt know which is correct and why.
– How do you currently play wedges? Or you a sweeper, digger, or something in the middle?
Probably more on the digger side. I think my swing is a bit upright and the tendency to flip just digs a bigger hole. Normally play square but no fear of a 60* flop. Ball position will creep back when things start to feel wristy.
– Besides the fitting, what else are you looking forward to once you step foot on TPI property?
Oh manā¦.turf! Former course superintendent so you know I wanna see all the guts. They wouldnāt have to ask twice to bomb and level divots. Iāve been through the 2025 Live thread too many times to count and still canāt believe Iāll get to walk the halls that the pros get to. Excited to see behind the scenes and the racks of hardware. And of course, the crĆØme de la crĆØme if we get to meet the man. Itās already overwhelmingā¦so friggin excited.
– Finally, a fun one: If you get the option to custom stamp your wedges, what are you going to do?
Iāve about worn out the Titleist website with this, just in case.
#1 – 4 daughters, 16-25 who are as thrilled as I am about going to TPI:

#2 – This is a reference to the 2025 Experience. Bob Vokey said something about āyour authentic wedge gameā. I donāt know the entire context was, but I liked the idea. To me itās kinda ādonāt internet golfer or arm chair golfer this shot, do what YOU can doā. May or may not been what he was referencing, but it keeps me humble thinking about it.

I have a decent short game. I don’t hit any of my wedges full. I can get enough spin and land soft. I haven’t found a swing I’m comfortable with to get the ball to roll out.
Lately, I have been using my 50 degree wedge less and less. It just doesn’t feel comfortable anymore. It’s likely because I replaced my irons and play the DG S300 shafts vs. C-taper lite. My 56 and 60 have the S400 shafts, while my 50 have the C-taper lite shaft. I originally got the 50 with a shaft to match my old irons thinking I would be hitting that wedge full. As my game improved, I rarely hit it full anymore. This opportunity is perfect timing because I’ve been thinking about replacing my 50 degree wedge. Might even go 54/58 for a 4 degree gapping. I’m excited to see what I get fit into at TPI.
My biggest question on wedges is on the grind and bounce. I play a slightly open or squared face. I’m a borderline sweeper. Hoping the correct bounce and grind will give me more consistency with my short game.
I’m happy and excited to be at the TPI facility. Hoping I get to meet Bob Vokey.
Haven’t decided what stamp to put on the wedges. Going to think about it between now and when I’m there. I’m pretty conservative, so I’d probably just go with Lsquared or LL.
