The Contest
Your job will be to tell us about the first Callaway golf club you ever purchased. Why did you buy it? How did it perform? What replaced it? You have 50 words or less to accomplish the task. Don’t tell us what you think we want to hear, tell us about your journey.
Qualifying
You must be a 2024 or 2025 Albatross Club Member to enter. The club is open to anybody and helps benefit a wonderful charity. Not a member and want more details? Click here to find out what the AC is all about.
How to Enter
This one involves one step and not skimming : )
1. Tell us about your Callaway Birth : )

You only have a certain amount of words. Make them count. Then sit back and see if you get your ticket punched to the Grandaddy of em All! This one may be judged. Read the entire post.
Good luck everybody. This contest will remain open until end of day Saturday the 12th.
My first Callaway club was a XR driver.

This was a fairway finding machine. The XR allowing me to hit more approaches from the short grass. I replaced it after at least 4 years of play (a century in THP time) by a Cobra Speedzone in search of more distance.
My First Callaway club i had was an Erc Fusion 9.5. I bought it because of the nice carbon look on top. I loved the forgiveness of the club it was also sneaky long. After a few good years I replaced it with a cobra amp cell.
First set of Callaway clubs I bought were in fact not for me but for my oldest son when he graduated from university 18 years ago. He had a Callaway driver but not irons so why not. He still continues to play Callaway today.
Not sure how much longer this one will be open, but reading through here there are some things missing from some of the entries. Just make sure we’re not skimming!
(Just for fun, not an entry)
I thought the #7 was the dumbest looking putter ever. Then tried one, then bought one. Then bought 8 more and tried every configuration Callaway made. Now I don’t even look at other putters and it’ll take an act of Congress or the Callaway staff to make me replace it.
I bought the X18 Pro Series irons. I really liked the cavity back design. Coming from blades, this was the new design at the time. perimeter weighting. These were very forgiving & absolute launchers. I gamed them for a number of years until I replaced them with the 762’s

My first was the unforgettable Great Big Bertha. She got my attention after doing everything better than the competition during my first fitting. She was temporarily replaced by an XR16, then came back for some fun, then was replaced by Epic Flash. My wife hits bombs with her now.
First purchase was a Callaway Mavrik SZ. When hitting it against every other driver that came out that year I felt like it had an added pop and accuracy others didn’t. It’s also my sons name so it was a no brainer. It’s replacement is a Cobra Darkspeed X.
My Callaway birth was the Steelhead Plus 3 wood. A poor college student, 1st upgrade from my original starter set. Its stellar design aesthetics including color, sleek sole, and satisfying sound were unforgettable. Smooth like a knife through butter on fairway and rough. Replaced by a Ping G2 with graphite.

My first Callaway clubs were X-22 Irons bought immediately after a quick demo post round where the current irons disappointed. They performed admirably with some nice forgiveness before being replaced by TaylorMade R-11s for a THP event, which in turn have been replaced by many increasingly awesome Callaway sets.
This one is all closed up.
Entry:
The original Big Bertha RCH driver. I wanted to be better. I wanted to make the team. It was new exciting tech that was worth every penny of mowing money, because I was better and did make it. And didn’t replace it until I joined THP over 20 years later.
I really do wish everyone luck on this. Amazing event and thinking back to that first one and why was surprisingly emotional. Always grateful for that kind of thing.
Entry:
First Callaway: 1999 Big Bertha Hawkeye Driver, Proforce shaft (Lakers)
My friend Paul (RIP) had one I liked.
It was a revelation for my driving, which I had struggled directionally with for a while. Changed my game.
Replace by Mizuno MP001 2005
Thanks for the opportunity!
I learned to play golf in my teenage years so my set was a cobbled mix of pawn shop irons and putter. My first experience was the original Big Bertha driver. It was a gift from my parents. It performed beautifully considering it replaced my 4 iron.
Good luck everyone!
Great Big Bertha was my first Callaway Club and i got it when it was released a first for me. and It performed better than any driver i ever hit. That began my journey into equipment which would lead me here. Replaced it with the Great Big Bertha II
