Back in August, we featured a new release from Cleveland Golf called the Launcher XL. As part of that line, the Launcher XL Halo Hy-Wood seemed to get a bit lost in the shuffle…Part hybrid, part fairway wood, where does it fit in the bag?

When we put it to the test in the THP Tech Studio however, it quickly became one of the favorites and something that could help a lot of golfers. Bridging the gap from woods to irons has never been easy. Be it through higher lofted fairway woods, hybrids, utility irons, etc.
This new breed is upon us, something that could offer the distance of those higher lofted fairway woods, in a package that might just be easier to hit. Rather than continue to extoll the benefits, we hopped into the hitting bay to tell you all about it.
We kick off the video below, with an overhead view discussing some of the technology that makes the Hy-Wood unique. From there, we take some swings in the hitting bay of the Tech Studio and show the data and of course finish it up with the table view breaking down what you just saw.
After watching the video above, is this a club that would fit into your bag? If so, where would it slot and what would it replace?
For more information on the Hy-Wood or any of the entire line of Cleveland Launcher XL, check out their website at www.clevelandgolf.com.

I’ll be getting the Hy-Wood out again tomorrow, it’s going to be pretty soggy out there, so a very good chance I’ll be giving it a few swings. Might play again Saturday, expecting more of the same, it will probably be cart path only at both courses, so likely shorter drives, and longer second shots for the Hy-Wood..
Played 9 more holes today… hit 5 of 7 fairways, the 2 I missed were close and in no danger… holy crap this club is awesome! Nine for 13 in the last 2 days!
The Hy-Wood was my best purchase last golf season. Virtually point and shoot from 200 yards. The key for me is to choke down about an inch on the shaft. Once I started doing this the magic was unleashed. I will never part with it.
I got a shipping notification. Time to join this party.
Hit mine a few times this weekend. Swing was rusty, but hit a few that had me smiling.

OMGosh! I’ve played about 4 rounds with my HyWood and had inconsistency with it. Choked up about an inch and BoOM! Success. Hit two par 3 tee shots 180yds+ into 20-25mph winds with one landing 2 feet from the pin and rolling out about 10 feet. Off the fairway I draw it.

Yep. Choking down is the key! Crazy but true!

Smoked this thing today 223 yards from a side hill lie to reach a par 5 in two. Just one of the reasons I took a flyer on this club. Missed the 10 foot eagle putt but enjoyed the tap in Birdie. Hy-Wood for the win!

Still loving this club! Every time I pull it I’m excited to have it in my hands. I put a real velocore shaft in it and it just works. Wonderful to have such an easy to hit dependable club like this.
This club is so freaking good. Took it out cold for a quick evening round and it was money. Easy to elevate, on a rope, and I haven’t looked at distance but it felt fast.
Maybe one more chorus to the other voices here will get more to jump on it. If you aren’t currently confident with this spot in your bag getting the hy wood on sale right now would likely be your best purchase of the year.
I’m going to miss this club this year. But until I get my Cobra clubs for the Morgan Cup, the Hy Wood will be in the bag.

I may bag battle this and the King Tec, but after today I may just give it the spot through Spring
Was reviewing the maiden round and this deserves a bump. It was long high and consistent from the tee, fairway, and rough.
Hy-wood was automatic today on the range. Truly the safest club in my bag.
for those who swapped hywood shafts, what was the shaft of choice?
Fuji Ventus HB velocore for the win. Stable like no other.

In the interest of full disclosure what I built when I pulled the head and reshafted the HyWood was an “Accuracy Build” with mine playing at 40”. So I can’t really comment on the standard stock build. But this club has worked for me and keeps finding it’s way back in my bag as a 5W replacement.

I see a lot of you are choking down or playing a short build, I feel like a trendsetter.

How is the swingweight with the new shaft? Part of me wants to work with my fitter to find the optimal fit like we did with my driver. Part of me doesn’t want to mess with whatever voodoo Cleveland did to make a light shaft club that works so well.

I’m thinking similar, if TEEm Tour Edge gets to review fairways this year I might go with a 5-wood to see if it can kick the Hy-Wood out of the bag.

I wish they made a 3W 15* Hy-Wood instead of the Launcher 3W which is just a low screamer off the deck.

Nope, it’s nothing like the Hy-wood for me, glad it works for you.(y) I gotta wonder if their fairway woods were so easy to get airborne why did they manufacture the Hy-wood?????

All I know is I’m a fan.
Has anyone tried the 3, 4 or 5 hybrid? Does it have the same feel as a hy-wood or a different club?

I have the 3 and 4 hybrids. The 4 hybrid might be the easiest club I’ve ever used. It’s a genuine cheat code
The hy-wood is so easy to launch. Fought a high wind today but pulled this on a downwind hole. Shotscope had it sent 281 yards ? For reference, my longest drive last year was 290.
It went high and the wind did the rest!
Hit a tiny ass green (talking 10 paces across maybe) from 210 today. ?
I’ve been using thee HyWood more and more past 2-3 weeks and it has become my goto club. There is definitely a break in period but I’ve been hitting it well both off the tee and fairway/rough.

It’s a totally different club.
The Hybrids and Fairways don’t have nearly the same COG characteristics and the Hy-Wood has a much heavier head giving it the added distance.
So heavier head weight and lower COG is what makes the Hy-Wood miles apart from their current fairways and hybrids.
Last time out I had one of those drives that you just don’t want to talk about, the one I call my Driving Wedge (playing partners actually offered for me to hit another one), but I walked over to my ball, pulled the Hy-Wood, and crushed one down the middle, with a little draw that I rarely get with the long clubs, leaving me a nice little wedge shot to the green. As bad as the drive was, that Hy-Wood shot put a smile on my face that lasted a while. 😎
Any word out on the next generation of Hy-wood and when it’ll be released? Cleveland blowing out the Halo line makes it seem like something is imminent.
I love my Hy-wood and 4H… but always curious about the new hotness.
What’s the ball position for this club and would hands be neutral or slightly forward?
The hywood and me are falling on tough times the last few weeks. I can’t figure out why. Still love my Halo 4H. But just can’t get the magic. I can’t figure it out. Low pulls are the order of the day.

I hope there is a new version. If not, I’ll be buying a backup!
I’m still on the fence whether to make this my tinker club this summer…. It is great as is but could a new shaft make it better ?

If you’re hitting low shots with a hywood its your swing, that thing is almost impossible to flight low.
The Hy-Wood is getting a break from my bag, as part of TEEm Tour Edge I’m testing the C723 5-Wood, which is also 18*. With just one outing so far, I’m hitting the 5-Wood pretty much as well as the Hy-Wood, and definitely longer. Time will tell how this works out, and it might come down to how the gapping works out with the rest of my bag if I end up hitting both clubs really well. ????

To me, as a Hy-Wood user, I feel like that club might work better with someone who wants to look down at a smaller head, vs someone who likes seeing more real estate in a 5w head.

I’m similarly situated. I just removed the Hy-Wood from my bag and replaced it with the Cobra Aerojet 5W as part of my Morgan Cup bag. I also have only one round in with the 5W but I’m seeing similar results, hitting the ball just as well. The only difference for me is trajectory. The Hy-Wood launches higher for me. We’ll see how that plays out as I get more time with the 5W.

That was one of the reasons I bought the HY-Wood in the first place, I’ve had a hybrid in that spot for ages, haven’t carried a 5-Wood in I can’t remember how long. Getting the opportunity to test and review the new TEE Fairways provided an opportunity I couldn’t resist to try a 5-Wood again, and so far I’m glad I did. There is always the possibility that both could end up in the bag, the 5-wood is already looking like it will be longer, and being adjustable it could be turned down to 16.5* and kick the 15* Fairway out of the bag.
I might be losing my Hy-Wood this summer as my son is graduating to adult sized clubs. He loves my 4H in the same family which is a legit cheat club. He’ll be better than me in short order so I’ll just game other clubs I have until he gives it back lol
I hate this club, anyone want it? ?
The Hy-wood sounds like dating a stripper. A phenomenal ride while it lasts but destined to be short lived…..

That’s hilarious lol. I think it’s important to not over swing this and the entire line of clubs. The shaft is so light and counterbalanced you need to let it do the work
My clubfitter told me the Hy-wood replacement would be in by Tuesday. So in it’s swan song today, it got pulled three times.
First it drilled a perfect tee shot on a par 4 with trouble in driver distance.
On a 212 yard uphill par 3, it landed pin high left of the green for an easy chip.
On the par 5 18th I hit a terrible tee shot. Had to punch out and was 220 out. Stuck it pin high just off the green and got up and down for par.
Because, of course.
Hmm, Tuessday and I’m antsy for new info! Wonder what’s coming out.
I may be pouring one out for the Hy-wood. My PING G430 5-wood came in this week. It was everything I wanted in the initial shakedown session. I hit 80% of the shots off the deck and it was as good as the vintage days with the Hywood. I don’t know if it’ll be as good out of the rough.
It’s more of a testament to the how good the G430 line is than an indictment of the Hy-wood.

True, but a big price difference though?
Still love my Hy-Wood. We shall never get divorced.
