The Extra 20 Yards Training Aid & Exercise Machine

Who doesn’t want to hit the ball further? Every year we see new equipment produced by the various OEM’s and each one claims to give the golfer more distance. With all this new technology it’s like the clubs just hit themselves. However, we all know this isn’t 100% true, and while new technology has certainly helped us golfers gain a few yards on the course, the final outcome will always be determined by our own abilities. That is where The Extra 20 Yards comes into play.

From the Company:
The Extra Twenty Yards® is a patented product specifically designed to aid golfers to hit the golf ball further. The product is a weight machine which should be used as part of a training exercise programme to develop strength in the golf swing. Strengthened muscles and fitness will result in faster movement and golf club speed. The increased inertia of the club head results in hitting the ball further. This is an innovative golf training product.

Setup:
The company states that the setup of The Extra 20 Yards machine should take about twenty minutes. I believe with the right knowledge and DIY ability this would be the case, however, for me it took quite a bit longer. The steps were by no means complicated, but for someone who is still a little afraid of a drill, it was a small challenge. What frustrated me the most was that I had to go to the store and purchase an anchor because it is not included in the box. With different types of walls and options for placing this device, I understand why the company didn’t include it, but I wish they would just include an anchor for the different options in order to avoid a trip to the local hardware store. This is not a huge issue by any means, but something I felt was worth mentioning. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to install this machine.

Once The Extra 20 Yards machine is set up it’s very secure and takes up little to no space. I was able to secure this to a wall in my guest bedroom and it fit nicely in the corner. This is a smaller room, maybe 12’x12’ and it has a queen size bed with headboard footboard, a full size dresser and mirror, plus two night stands and The Extra 20 Yards fit right in without making the room looked cramped at all.

How It Works:
Once set up, using this machine is rather simple. You set your weights to your desired number, grab a hold of the handle that looks and feels just like a golf club, including having a standard golf grip on it, you step forward slightly and start the swing motion. Here are some videos to better demonstrate exactly how it works.

Info from the company:
Use The Extra 20 Yards® for 5 minutes, 3 days a week, and within a couple of weeks you will be hitting the ball an extra 20 yards!

Product information
• We all know that weight machines are ideal for developing strength – strength increases club head speed – club head speed means you can hit the ball further.
• The Extra 20 Yards® has been designed specifically for developing strength and flexibility during the golf swing.

It has 3 key features:
• The pivoted pulley – ensures you stay on the correct swing plane as you develop your golfing muscles. The swivel pulley at the top allows both left and right handed golfers to use the product. Those who are using the product a lot may want to alternate between right and left handed use in order to aid symmetrical muscle development.
• The correct weights – which are calibrated to ensure optimum strength development for the golf swing. Too light, and they are of no use. Too heavy, and the right muscle response will not be developed. Each weight increment is approximately 2Kg or 4.4lbs.
• The golf grip – ensures you are replicating the golf swing, right down to your fingers! This is unlike any normal gym apparatus.

Product Dimensions
• Height: 7ft 8in or 235cm

Performance:
It is truly amazing how different it feels to make a golf swing motion with added weight. I really appreciate the different weight options making this a machine that can be used both by men and women of any age. I wouldn’t go so far as to say it could replace your regular fitness routine, but it is definitely a workout. If someone was looking to make this more than just a golf training aid/fitness machine there are ways to incorporate other exercises. Try adding squats or lunges during the downward motion. Just remember, this is here to help you hit the ball further, not get trim sleek legs. What this does is help you strengthen the muscles used to perform the golf swing. When I first started to take up golf all I ever heard was muscle memory, you have to gain muscle memory. That is exactly what will happen when using The Extra 20 Yards.

I have been using this device for a few weeks now and I can confidently say I am hitting the ball further. However, I am also going through a pretty drastic swing change so my game is a bit erratic, but it seems no matter how poorly I am hitting the ball, when I hit it, it’s going further than it ever has before.

Overall:
The question is often asked, “What’s a great fitness routine that is golf specific?” Well, The Extra 20 Yards system has answered that question. Not only does it help with executing a proper golf swing, but it helps gain that all important muscle memory and by having the handle be just a like a golf club it’s as close as one can get to actually holding the club in their hands and swinging away at the range.
The price tag for this machine is a little steep at $365 plus $30 for shipping, but it will become a permanent fixture in your home or office and it takes up very little space. My biggest complaint at this price point is not including the anchors. It’s an quick and inexpensive trip to the hardware store, but I would still like to see it included in the box.

For someone looking to gain extra yardage, increase muscle memory, get a more fluid swing and also improve their exercise and fitness routine, this is definitely a product worth taking a look at. Make sure to check out their website here and view all the videos which offer great demonstrations on how The Extra 20 Yards works. As avid golfers we are always looking for ways to improve our game and now we have that chance while helping our physical fitness as well.

Here’s to hitting the ball further,
