A couple of weeks ago, we had Jason Finley on THP Live talking about a new THP Experience coming this year called the Grandmama. A spin off of the Grandaddy of em All and we are super excited for what some members of this forum will get to experience.
It is an all expenses paid trip of a lifetime.
What’s Included
Airfare
Hotels
Club Fitting at ECPC
Full bag of clubs
Tour Callaway
Meet R&D
Play Golf with members of the team there
And so much more
At the Grandaddy each year, 12 lucky THPers experience something special, but it comes with a job of reviewing their equipment to the masses through the THP Forum once it is released. This year, there are only 4, but they will be doing the job of 12, so we are looking for the committed. The person that loves to talk about this game, the equipment and share his honest assessment of everything they learn through content and reviews.
To up the stakes, Emmy Winning Producer, Jeff Neubarth, has informed us that you will have the Callaway Media Productions crew to assist in that creation. Be it audio recording or editing, all of the pictures taken you want done and even video production and editing. That’s right, if you have a vision, but lack the equipment or knowledge to make it come to life, no problem.
Your job, if you choose to accept it will be to follow the instructions in each contest that comes up and show you are ready to review. Remember there are 4 THPers heading to the Grandmama, and each contest will award someone the full trip.
Qualifying
You must be a 2020 Albatross Club Member to enter. The club is open to anybody and helps benefit a wonderful charity. All of the details and benefits are here.
The Contest
Golf balls are always a hot topic on the THP Forum and this year the Callaway Chrome Soft is ridiculously good based on the reviews of forum members. We know not everybody has tried it however, but they have played golf in the past and we hope they can discuss golf balls. This contest is all about you reviewing a golf ball.
How to Enter
Tell us in 100 words or less, about your golf ball, in a way that promotes engagement, thoughts and questions from other THPers.
Good luck everybody. This contest will remain open for about a week.
CSX TT:
Triple Track was a primary reason for trying these. I line up putts with a line on the ball, then putter to that line. TT helped me align better than any line, while also being useful on a tee. As a person that fights low spin with moderate speed with irons I sensed an uptick in distance and stopping power over its CS siblings. Off driver it was a little lower launching. Saw again increased distance but struggled slightly with control, probably due to my moderate swing speed. Short shots were precise. Feel was firm, but not unpleasant.
What can I say? My ball loves adventure! It especially loves spending time in the woods, at the beach, and in the water. That short grass stuff just won’t do for my ball. My ball has also been known to play hide and seek. And sometimes it wanders off never to return. But I take solace in the fact that it is never truly lost, it’s just on another adventure!
Here is my official entry:
Handicap: 10.7
Swing Speed: 110+
Typical Ball Flight: High Cut
The ball I play now works for me because I can compress it with ease and it generates fantastic distance. Off the tee, I notice it has no issues getting height and it helps eliminate unnecessary spin which otherwise could cost me a fairway or even a ball. Iron play the ball rises fantastically and lands softly helping me judge my distance control even better. Around the greens this ball shins as I can play many shots that help me get it close. You should try this ball too!
Lets get those entries in guys!!!!
2020 CSX TT – TT carried over from 2019 ERC and CSX…don’t tell USGA, they will want to outlaw…it’s cheating?
CSX does everything you want, which is all it NEEDS to do.
Long Driver-CHECK
Consistent Approach-CHECK
Greenside Spin-CHECK
Great Feel-CHECK
Am I’m wrong and why?
END Official Entry
Official Entry is only 50 words…saving the other 50 for some back forth about my ball. What you got?
1 piece of advise…don’t miss the bus!
Everyone’s got a chance man, but I do agree, you got to be in it to win it!!!
I agree 100. Only saying that because I was in GD last year and odds of lightning striking twice are slim!
I sure hope you are right! Both you and I know how special an event like this is!
But often that guy that gets hit by lightning gets struck more than once in his lifetime lol.
Is my gamer for you? In 2020 most balls are competitive with the driver and therefore, given players of similar swing speeds, will not help with the current social distancing requirements. Every ball offers high speed/low spin these days. My ball offers something the others can’t. Social distancing on the green! Maintaining separation between players is the new normal. While my opponents are playing safe aiming at the center of the green, I can fire at every pin because I know my ball offers consistent flight and spin performance which will help me maintain separation from my opponents where it counts! Closer to the hole!
I impart a lot of spin and am always looking for a low spinning ball. I think I’ve found one but there’s so many that fit that profile. That said, one constant regardless of what I use – a line. A solid putting line to help alignment. I’ve stopped doing this the last few rounds out of laziness (also with covid cups and flags, I just don’t care). But the absence of that routine has affected my putting for the worst. I have not tried triple track but really want to. If one line is good, 3 has to be great.
Fit into ProV1x years ago, I routinely order their 4 for 3 deal with free customization. I stretch that inventory about 1.5 seasons.
My latest order is not scheduled to ship (?COVID), so I will need to buy a few sleeves soon.
I am inclined to stick with the “play 1 ball exclusively” mantra, and with 4dz on order, I am pretty much pot committed for the season.
If you had to buy just a sleeve or 2 in this circumstance, what would you do? Mix it up with CS Triple Track? Dabble with some REACTIV cover technology?
WWFD?
I don’t know Jimmy. Event’s in December. Go for it!
Copout answer- Both? If you have the opportunity, I’d grab a sleeve of each and see what your likes/dislikes are for each.
I played a ton of balls from discounts to freebies to trial sleeves and decided on Q-Star Tour. I appreciate the firm ball off the tee that provides feedback on the sound and thwack placed on it yielding agressive distance and optimized performance. The cover is durable but also possesses modern technology to be able to produce tour level spin. On approaches, this ball provides a little hop while maintaining spin for accuracy. My ball provides the right touch around the green. Off the putter, you get a nice sound with perfect compromise between a rock and marshmallow.
How would you compare it to the ProV1x? If I recall correctly you were fit into those, right?
I thought this was every bit as long across the bag. Imho this was lower launching, particularly off driver. For me that increased distance with the csx. Triple track was a big plus for me. For whatever reason, and could have been my swing throughout, I hit more fairways with the V1X. I would need to do additional testing to figure out the why of it though.
Pro V1x. For my game? Until last December, I immediately dismissed them: how can a high-end, "spinny" ball suit my erratic, thin-hitting swing? Well, I did a ball fitting, and although the numbers said it was the right ball for me, I had to take them to the course for validation. Firm and far off the tee (with a slight draw), stops where I want it to, and a nice feel off the putter face…lo and behold, my perceived notions were wrong! Pro V1x really DOES suit my game!

Now if I could just find some 2020 Chrome Soft X balls to test against Pro V1x…
I have played a different ball seems like every year. Remember the Top Flite XL, the Maxfli, TaylorMade TP Black, Callaway Diablo, Callaway Hex. I played them all, some good, others well…. Ok
My current gamer Srixon Q Star Tour. What I like is that it does give that strong feel off the tee. My swing speed is perfect for the ball compression and I can immediately feel how well it was struck. Off my irons it gives me wonderful feedback almost instantaneously with what I call the crispness of the hit. I have tried several different putters with this ball and I have found a non insert putter works best, I can feel the ball explode from the face. Combination of crisp, feel, and explosive power. Srixon Q Star Tour, a ball for the good amateur player.
Is it OSCAR…oh wait a minute, that’s bologna.
ERC Soft would be perfect for you dude.
It flies straight and far from time to time,
which direction it will head is sure to surprise.
It is not too spinny but can stop on a dime,
a perfectly executed shot provides great joy I surmise.
But do not get too comfortable during the climb,
before long I will send you to your demise.
It wasn’t your fault, my swing caused the crime,
the time we spent together I wouldn’t revise.
How exciting! First ever Grandmama participant announced this week! Get your entries in and get ya popcorn ready!
The idea of having CMP help you share your thoughts and experiences, how cool is that? A crash course on media production? Sign me up!
I’m a low handicap golfer yet have a moderate driver SS. Because the USGA defines how far a golf ball can go any golf ball ad stating that I will gain 20 yards-well I’m not so sure. So what am I looking for in a golf ball? Consistency, dependability and durability. Distance, yes, but spin when I need it, performance in all types of conditions and great feel throughout the bag is why the Chrome Soft is my ball. It checks off all the boxes and gives me a 15th club in my bag every time I tee it up-confidence.
I had been a Pro V One guy, mainly due to getting free sleeves from my home course every weekend. They ended that freebie last Summer and when I got into the 2019 THP/Budget Golf Championship, I turned in some of my Callaway points for the ERC’s with Triple Track. Ever since I got those balls I have been a Triple Track guy. I really prefer the Chrome Soft, as I love its feel around the greens. Chrome Soft golf balls and Triple Track lines have helped make me dangerous with a putter in my hand and a better golfer.
Entry:
top flight xl
yesterday i played 9 holes and 2 balls. My normal ball and a top flight xl. I wanted to compare. So here goes.
drives: xl felt like i was hitting rocks. But, same flight, a little higher and only 5 yds or so shorter
Approach: Xl felt like a rock. hard landing and no spin. Difficult to contol
Chip: If you need to stop it forget it.
Putting: feel is an issue. like a rock and doesn’t roll as true as other ball.
results: Pay more. Not worth it
Other ball? Callaway chrome soft is worth it!
I really hope no one is discounting this event.
