Few topics get golfers fired up quite like loft jacking. Iron lofts have become stronger over the years, leading to plenty of comments about a modern 7-iron really being a 6-iron. But is looking at the number on the bottom of the club really that simple?
In Episode 9 of Splitting Fairways, Hawk and Jeremy tackle the loft-jacking debate and why stronger lofts aren’t necessarily good or bad.
Why Have Iron Lofts Become Stronger?
Modern iron construction has changed dramatically. Hollow-body designs, thinner faces, lower centers of gravity, and improved materials have allowed manufacturers to create irons that produce more ball speed while still launching the ball high enough to be playable.

For Hawk, that combination of added distance and forgiveness can be a major benefit. If a stronger-lofted 7-iron launches high, carries farther, and still has enough stopping power to hold a green, does it really matter what loft is stamped on the spec sheet?
Jeremy looks at things a little differently. As a golfer who already generates plenty of speed, chasing additional distance with an iron can create more problems than it solves. Spin, peak height, distance control, descent angle, and proper gapping throughout the set may be far more important than simply hitting a 7-iron farther.
Does Loft Jacking Really Matter?
Of course, stronger lofts can create other issues. The race to build the longest 7-iron can lead to larger gaps at the bottom of the bag and the need for additional wedges. At the same time, many of these distance-focused irons also provide forgiveness that can make the game easier for a wide range of golfers.
Maybe the loft-jacking debate doesn’t need a winner. Instead of worrying about whether your 7-iron has the loft of an old 6-iron, the better question might be whether it produces the launch, spin, height, forgiveness, consistency, and distance your game actually needs.
The loft-jacking debate is officially over. Well, at least until the comments open.

I love this topic. I really don’t care what club I hit 150, I don’t want my 150 club to come in low and hot. I need a club that goes 140, I need a club that goes 130, etc. I want all those clubs to fly high and check up. I don’t want an iron that doesn’t check at all. I have a 26* hybrid to hit the ball 175ish so I’m not looking for big distance out of irons. I want them to be dependable and consistent.
Loft jacking was done to sell clubs not help performance though. Whatever loft that old 7 iron used to be, the loft jacked club still has that loft in the set, it just has an 8 or even a 9 on it. It’s not like we improved launch so much we don’t need 40* and up irons anymore. That part of the marketing has always been bullshit to me.
My god @Hawk bringing up the Burner 2.0 irons was a serious THP flashback.

Great set!!!! I owned those. In my head i didn’t associate them with the start of loft jacking, but they were definitely at the party
T350s in my hands are different than with @Hawk and different than with @Lord Tox and are different with an AVX vs X, vs V1.
i’m bringing out my jacked loft King cobras from 1993 next round.

Just as long as the elbow stays healthy-ish
I listened to this and it’s a great episode. I agree the 7i (or whatever club it is) need to hit the yardage you need and that’s it.
People who get caught up with lofts are the same that still want to wear metal spikes

You know you bring those up a lot when this convo comes up but the 7 iron in that set was 32* while the 7 iron on Cobra’s King Irons this year is 27.5*. If those were jacked, we’re still jacking. Links provided of course.

So long as you are getting the right descent angle and enough spin, it doesn’t really matter.
The main argument I make is that you reach a certain point where (especially in the mid to long irons) you aren’t getting the height and spin you need. But I suppose that could be a different topic wherein more players could see the benefit in switching to 9 and 7 woods.
Actually depends on the model, mine is 30 degrees. not sure why that’s relevant, still jacked and still just marketing because nothing’s changed in irons…
Finally sitting down for this one, can’t wait to see who makes me shake my fist at the sky more, @Lord Tox or @Hawk 😂
another fun discussion. The numbers on clubs are just symbols representing a distance you hit them. The numbers could be replaced with colors or shapes. 🤷♂️
Loft jacking is a low club speeder argument. I’ve never seen someone who can actually move a ball care what loft other golfers irons are.

That just isn’t correct based on this thread and every other thread on the subject.
I’m not saying there’s no tech but the loft of the 7 iron is marketing. It’s to beat the other 7 irons on distance. That’s all. It’s presumed better ballflight and all that stuff is the tech, but we didn’t eliminate the 32* iron because of tech, it’s still in that new set of King Cobras. Check the link, it’s there, but it’s called an 8 iron.

So if various lofts have been around for decades, in both irons, woods, wedges, etc. Who gets to determine which is the “right” way for everybody?
Why is a 12 degree driver still a driver, and so is a 7 degree? Why isnt one of them just jacked? Could it be because golfers need or want different lofts? Nobody just assumes the 7 degree will go further for every player.
Oh right, the 7 degree is just marketing. The 12 degree is really a 2 wood, disguised as a driver.
I was repeatedly called a skyfister and told loft jacking wasn't real, it was necessary due to new club design. So the real result was that my buddy who plays Callaway has 5 "wedges" and I have 4 "wedges" with my Titleist set because they mislabeled the clubs………… My old Yonex PW would be the middle wedge in my buddies 5 wedge setup. LOL

There’s not a right way. I’m just saying the choice is due to marketing because their is no objective way to determine so they use a subjective way. I’m not diminishing anybody by saying this. I think you think I’m poo-pooing manufacturers. I’m really not, I’m just saying the ever lowering loft of the club with a 7 on the bottom is largely a result of marketing and nothing else. The ever increasing performance of the club with a 32* loft, that’s technology and innovation. That’s what I want, a better 32* iron, I don’t want the longest 7 iron.

Like Muira Color Theory irons? I thought that was such a cool idea. I have 153 yards in, I’ll use the blue iron.

Do they cover gaps? If they do then who cares what is printed/stamped on the sole of the club?
I am with @Lord Tox in that sometimes irons can go too far for your bag and it creates gap issues.

So many people think a lower lofted driver will go farther. I had a customer dead set on a 9 degree. It took a while to convert him. I planted the seed early though. I probably spent close to 2 hours in total with him. I let him hit the 9 degree stock and then asked to try something and lofted it up.
Instant gains. Moved to a 10.5 after he started coming along. Lofted that up 2 degrees. Best numbers of the day. He was kind of open to hearing an argument for a higher lofted driver but he thought the 9 would go farther. I see a lot of folks like that. If they’re open to hearing me talk I’ll try to get them in the right driver. If not, I’ll sell them whatever they want. Usually in 9 degrees.
Good episode. I always enjoy listening on my morning commute.

…and that’s a shame that so many players basically talk themselves out of getting the best fit for their game.
Where does shaft length fit into this debate? Is it even a thing?

They have been playing some fantastic shows & venues last 12 months. Plus Charlie moonlighting with the Toy Factory Project. Absolutely on fire.
Back to trajectory optimization shenanigans.
Listened to this while driving yesterday morning. Then I played golf in the afternoon with some of the better players in our Men’s Golf Association so I payed closer attention to what irons everyone was playing. We all played from the blue tees and our handicap range is all low to mid single digits. Ages of the foursome range from mid 50’s to low 60’s.
The irons they played are Srixon Z 785, Titleist T200, Srixon ZX5.
On hole #8, a par 3 with a long carry over the marsh, we had 193 yards to a middle pin with a hurting breeze off the right. The clubs they hit were 5 iron, 7 wood, 7 iron, and I hit 5 hybrid. None of us hit the green but we all carried the hazard and were all about pin high left in the rough.
On hole #15, a par 3, we had 192 yards to a back pin over a pond to an elevated green with wind helping. On that hole my buddy playing the T200s hit an 8 iron that went over the green. I hit a 5 hybrid pin high left. My friend playing the 785s hit a smooth 5 iron short left. The other guy with the ZX5s hit a 5 iron pin high right.
We all play premium urethane covered balls. The greens are pretty firm right now with hot dry weather yet we generally all had a one hop and stop action on our approach shots. About the only the thing I noticed was that the guy with the Z 785 irons and myself both generally draw the ball. The other two usually fade it. The friend that plays the T200s has to hit a lot of partial wedge shots.
