You didn’t think 2024 was going to kick off without the latest Small Batch release, did you? Introducing the Toulon Santa Monica Small Batch.
It is indeed that time once again, and it should come as no surprise that Toulon is paying homage to one of the great locations and historical events in golf. With unparalleled attention to details and the intricacies of creating the most refined designs possible, it is time to say hello to the Santa Monica.
Toulon Golf “Santa Monica” Small Batch Putter
As Toulon Golf themselves put it, this design has its roots in what “a young amateur” did when he made his debut at the Los Angeles Open at Riviera Country Club. That moment changed golf, and the putter design which was used serves as the inspiration of the Santa Monica becoming the latest Small Batch release.
Why Santa Monica? Simply put, the design is reminiscent of Toulon Golf’s San Diego, so with Santa Monica being geographically close to the actual city of San Diego, it made sense. While it may tip the cap to one of the most successful singular putters of all time, rest assured Toulon Golf has sought to modernize it both visually and in playability.
There was a defined intent to create a vintage look to the new Santa Monica and that started with the more squared off shaping which also has a defined shoulder and bumper design. While the basis is the same, that is where Toulon Golf went to work in creating a cleaner topline radius while doing painstaking detail work on the fine lines from address.
Another key design aspect is the inclusion of a tri-sole. Not only is it one of the most classic putter design traits out there, but it also brings playability to the table in ensuring the putter is both square and properly soled at address. The sole has been milled using Toulon Golf’s new micro milling which brings a fun level of detail and finish to the surface.
The Santa Monica is milled out of the same 904L Stainless Steel which the company has been using in their other Small Batch releases. Its higher nickel and copper content than traditional stainless means it has better durability and feel. This is the same material that one of the finest Swiss watchmakers in the world uses, and not only is it expensive, but it is also incredibly time consuming to mill.
That material is also the basis for the full offset L-Shaped H1 Toulon Golf neck which the Santa Monica uses. The putter has a single site dot on the topline and the putter has a “Super Fine Double Fly Cut” face milling. Everything is tied together into a 343 gram blade that is finished with Candy Red paint fill and Candy Red Toulon pistol grip.
The Details
The Santa Monica will release on 1/18/2024 and 75 putters will be available on the Toulon Golf website, www.ToulonGolf.com. As has been the case with the other Small Batch releases, the Santa Monica will be priced at a premium $1,800 for the super limited design.
Watch maker material is interesting. Look forward to see how well these do.
Nice write-up @Jman . I know you are a Toulon romantic such as I especially with your recent addition in late 2023 (drop dead gorgeous).
I as well am a Toulon fan and own 2 myself but for $1,800 US this putter just doesn’t do anything for me. Maybe in another finish it might have
jumped out at me but either way the small batch are collector price tag putters and something I am not the target market anyway. I am sure in person it probably looks stunning.
@Jman I am curious what shaft they are putting in this putter. I recall a recent Toulon was all steel which is shocking given at the time Strokelab was rolled out I recall that composite putter shafts were the future. If steel, is this what we will be seeing become the norm in future Toulon releases?
These will be sold out in minutes I bet. That price is a little too rich for my blood, but it looks so good!
I wish I could use that style of putter but I can’t.
I know that Toulon putters have that clean look, but to me this is too clean. I appreciate the attempts to refine and make such a classic shape look better. Price point is high for my liking, but know these won’t last long once they are available.
I’m not a blade guy but dang this thing looks gorgeous!
Little blah looking for $1800 as most of the Toulon are gorgeous.

Well if you think about it, these small batch releases have pretty much all of the tech removed from the last Odyssey Toulon retail release.
There’s no diamond milling, no stroke lab, no tungsten weights.
Pretty putter! Thanks for the write up James!
tri sole, fancy milling, top dot.
Yes yes yes!
I grew up in the Bourbon Country of Kentucky. The small batch thing kind of started with the brown liquor.

They are doing their version of Tiger’s flat stick and that thing was no frills either.
Very nice looking putter! The price tag is something else though?!
Tri-sole and some fancy materials are nice though not for me even though I obviously get what they are going for. As far as price nobody should be surprised, this has been the price of small batch…the materials and pain staking details are hard to ignore.
This could be one of my favorite releases they have had. Although I do not get along with blades, I love the simplicity and clean elegance that Toulon did with this putter.
It’s gorgeous.

It’s been the case with every Small Batch release thus far, it’s the same metal which a certain prominent and world renowned watchmaker uses.
And it feels impeccable.
It also takes 6 times as long to mill.

This is a nod to the “elder wand” if you will, so the finish made sense there…if you get my drift.
The shafts are steel, which since Toulon and Odyssey aren’t one entity anymore, makes sense. It also keeps the sophistication of the putters intact, clean and elegant, done to levels of detail no one else does, has been their story since re-establishing themselves as their own entity.

It’s not about the shape as much as the specific singular putter it’s modeled after…

This is the Small Batch. The price has been the same for every release, and will be going forward. There will be other options coming this year, but this line is purposefully aimed at premium (and they ARE premium)

It’s a gorgeous nod to the Big Cat.
Very pretty looking putter
I always forget until I see it done well, how much I adore a tri-sole.
Hey lookie there!! Kind of knew this was coming and @Jman doesn’t disappoint-
Absolutely gorgeous and love everything about it. Such an elegant looking putter!
I love the way this putter looks, one day I will have a small batch, just not today.

I know, right?
Sooo nice.
It is beautiful. I will be interested to see if they are selling. I am not sure when they went up on the web site but you can still buy one right now.

They have sold out each time, and this will too. There is only 75 putters. It isn’t instant, but they sell. This being modeled after the most legendary single putter head ever, won’t hurt it.

All sorts of goodness! I need a tri sole like this in my life.
I love a blade with almost no accoutrements. I prefer more of the 009 rounded bumper look. But this is a nice putter. Weston is probably annoyed. Lol
It’s really nice but like others, I prefer a more unique finish from the Toulon line. Something to make it stand out.

Why would he be? It’s not like he came up with the design in the first place. All these custom putter makers essentially survive on people who want a Spieth/Tiger/Cam Smith etc. putter without taking up a loan for a Circle T.

And he does….the same thing.
I can’t wait for his next temper tantrum.

I’m sure he will again try to pick a fight with one of the nicest and most successful minds in putters. I have little doubt.

Toulon wouldnt fall into that mix. Head of Industrial Design for the two biggest golf equipment companies over several decades.

Absolutely. My comment was more in reference to the small custom makers like Weston.
Tri-sole, simple alignment, nice materials… sounds like a winner! That said, I feel like it’s missing something – especially on the back, opposite the face. I’d also swap out red for blue, but that’s just my personal preference showing.
Way out of my budget.

Ha! Nope, not at all. Pretty sure even his ‘swoosh’ brand putter had red.
@Jaman, nice write up. Always appreciate the effort you put into your articles.
I’m sitting here thinking that spending $1800 for a putter would be a tough explanation by me to my wife. ?
