Toulon Small Batch La Jolla

For many, the PGA Tour season kicks off at Torrey Pines. The scenes that have unfolded here over the years are legendary and the list of greats that have claimed victory here is long. Torrey’s 36 holes sit on the Pacific Ocean, just north of San Diego, Calfornia in a neighborhood called La Jolla. Talk about prime real estate. La Jolla is characterized by its stunning cliffs that have spent eons being formed by the crashing waves of the Pacific. To mark the Tour’s return to Torrey and pay homage to its hometown, Toulon Golf is revealing its most recent Small Batch design today, simply called La Jolla.

Toulon La Jolla

With lineage tracing back to the Toulon San Diego and Small Batch Santa Monica, La Jolla is a classic plumber’s neck blade with a squared profile at address as well as sleek shoulders and bumpers. It’s the constant – the putter that always has been and always will be. However, it draws inspiration from the effects the Pacific Ocean has had on the cliffs of La Jolla. Over time, the constant crashing of the waves has eroded or softened the landscape.

Toulon invested great effort into softening every radius of La Jolla blade, from bumpers to shoulders and even on the hosel stem. The hosel itself is also slightly inset from the topline, reminiscent of a putter that has seen much success at Torrey Pines. In many ways, La Jolla has a throwback feel to it that should make many fans of the classics happy.

The back bumpers have been slimmed down as they wrap around and down to the sole. Void of almost all stamping, the sole features a small “La Jolla” in candy red paint fill. You’ll instantly notice one Toulon’s favorite sole designs in the Tri-Sole, but even that has been sculpted to soften its feel and look. Toulon is calling it a “melted” Tri-Sole. The three sections of the sole will be noticeable to the eye, but to the hand the transitions will feel more gradual and cohesive.

As we brought up, Torrey Pines has seen many champions over the years, but none have captured the hearts of golf fans quite like Tiger Woods. His 2008 US Open victory on the South Course is a thing of legends. An injury. A birdie on the 72nd hole to force a playoff. The release of emotion when he came out on top. It’s really the type of thing you read about in a novel, but it happened. It just seems fitting that the La Jolla also pays a nod to Torrey’s greatest champion. This design, while timeless, will forever be associated with Woods, and the La Jolla incorporates small features like a single sight dot and an engraved, pumping red fist on the cavity.
