When it comes to listing the most iconic names in golf, there’s a strong argument to be made for True Temper. This American company began making steel shafts almost 100 years ago, and Dynamic Gold, their flagship iron shaft line, has been around for over 40 years. How many golf products in regular play today can make a claim like that? It’s difficult to grasp the impact True Temper has had on the golf industry. It would be almost impossible to conceive a player that hasn’t had a set of their shafts in the bag at some point, and the list of Tour players and wins in their stable is almost impossible to tally up. How do you describe a brand like that best? Easy. True Temper is iconic.
Knowing all that, it just makes sense that True Temper’s first entry into the grip market is named ICON. Believe it or not, I didn’t even mean to get deep into wordplay when I wrote down those words. Nonetheless, it’s going to seem like I did anyway, so I’ll just lean into it a bit. Can True Temper really compete in a market dominated so heavily by a couple main players? It seems like if anybody can, it would be them. Let’s look at what they are bringing to the table with ICON.

Before we go too much further, it’s important to make clear that True Temper isn’t just outsourcing a grip and slapping their name on it. Rather, they’ve invested substantially into grips with a brand-new, 60,000 square foot facility in North America. ICON is the product of three years of R&D and prototyping rubber compounds and designs.
Knowing that, we’re going to address the elephant in the room. Yep, it looks like a grip. From a distance, there isn’t really anything about ICON that is going to elicit a bunch of chatter. However, when you 1) consider what types of grips get the most play, both on Tour and with amateurs, and 2) the deep ties that True Temper has both with Tour and the equipment manufacturers, it makes perfect sense that the company would work on perfecting the industry standard.

A close look at ICON reveals exactly how True Temper chose to reinvent the wheel. The iX Perforation pattern delivers aggressive traction in the hands and quickly channels away greater amounts of moisture than their competitors. It’s one thing to see the iX Perforation pattern in pictures, but it’s even more noticeable in hand. The ICON somehow feels incredibly familiar and comfortable while gripping firmly against the hands.
“The ICON grip features our new iX perforation, which provides superior moisture control and increased traction compared to traditional perforations,” said David Barker, Vice President of Grip R&D. “We’ve implemented the iX perforation in a higher density pattern than traditionally used, delivering a 20% increase in perforation surface area over leading grips on the market. In addition, we’ve focused on increasing the pattern density even further on the lower section of the grip to provide more control in the bottom hand.”

True Temper is using laser machined tooling in their new facility, enabling extremely high levels of quality and consistency from grip to grip. The rubber compounds are cross-linked, which may take a college class to truly understand, but in the simplest terms this process creates a very strong rubber that maintains the feel we expect while resisting deformities. Many players will find instant comfort with the mid-firm, slightly tacky feel of the ICON.

“We are extremely excited to expand our product portfolio into grips,” said David Walker, General Manager of True Temper’s golf division. “True Temper has a 100-plus-year heritage of developing the finest quality golf shafts, trusted by golfers at all levels, including many of the greatest players in the history of the game. The introduction of the ICON grip represents another important step in our commitment to providing top-tier equipment to golfers worldwide.”

The True Temper ICON grips will be available through online retailers, golf stores, and club fitters across True Temper’s extensive network of distributors. Stay tuned to THP to learn more as we continue to test them in the coming months.

In our case the demand for the standard far exceeded our expectations. Our lead grip engineer who came from another company said our sales in 6 months were multiples higher than a new grip from his old company would do in a couple years. Because of the demand we had to focus on building more standard tools and the tools for midsized were back burnered. But we have the first tools on their way now.

Excited to see midsize come to market…will be trying for sure

The regular is very, very good. It’s got me thinking of maybe going maybe to a simple midsize grip
Spent some time with one of these on a 5H today. They’ve got a lot of bite and you don’t feel the texture. Not too soft, not too firm.

sounds damn near perfect
You know, I’ve still not held any of these in hand yet.
Might need to change that too.

Hold on a minute here….just one damn minute.
I actually tried something new that you haven’t yet? That’s crazy talk in these parts! I mean, it’s on a 10 year old hybrid that I love, but still!

Very rarely do I miss things, but I’ve definitely missed these hahaha
If anyone is on the fence, here’s a pretty good deal. These grips are so good, $5.15 a pop is a steal.

I am becoming a fan. In the short time I have had them they fit that profile of "not too soft and not too firm". The texture and overall pattern is perfect and has enough "tack" to handle the humidity I often play in.
I also agree for the price point, if anyone is a Tour Velvet player, try one of these and you will be surprised on how much better they are all around.

This sums it up really well for me. Slightly better than Tour Velvet and that is a really good thing.
I haven’t done anything but change grips and my hand fatigue is virtually nonexistent. Coming from the ZCords I am sure any grip with moderate comfort or vibration dampening might have offered similar results, but the Icons are on my clubs, so they get the praise. The one thing I like about these is that they are not overly soft, have some serious tack to them, but not harsh or rough. I am about 6 hours post round, and previously I would be 3 advil in and dealing with pain in my hands.
The relief is welcomed, and I can’t recommend these enough if you are looking for a grip that is a touch softer than a cord, but not too soft like some comfort lines offer. I will also sing the praises of the texture pattern, and the ability keep the club secure in your hands. I had some serious humidity going on this morning, and I never once felt like the club would slip. Tour Velvets for me are a little too slick and never felt like they offered all that I need. These are everything you think Tour Velvets are and taken up several notches all across the board.

Yep. You don’t feel the “cuts” at all like you do with the RP’s. Which I never payed attention to until I tried these. Now I can’t “un-feel” it.
I am a little shocked how much a grip change helped my hand fatigue. Since switching to these grips the pain and overall discomfort I had previously felt is all gone. I wanted to wait until this weekend to really test this out because I played 2 rounds back to back. Usually with my old grips that would leave my hands throbbing and in some serious pain. Last night at dinner it dawned on my that my hands didn’t hurt and I didn’t need to take an Advil.
The performance that these grips offer is pretty amazing also. Soft but firm, and the texture pattern handles moisture perfectly without sacrificing comfort. I am sure other grips might have offered similar relief, but as someone who was seriously considering talking to a hand specialist, having that pain 100% gone says it all.
I’m really intrigued by these. Unfortunately, I just re-gripped all my clubs with Tour Velvet 360’s a couple months ago. ??

Oooo….that would be perfect timing to add one on a wedge or something and let the best man win!
I had hoped to be able to pick up one grip and try it but I only see larger packs on Amazon. Don’t want to spend $15+ for one grip. Maybe PGATSS sells singles at a decent price.

They do. It should be $8.99 per grip. That is where I got the extras I needed
These were a no upcharge option for Elyte Fairways so I figured this would be a great time to test it out.

The 5W I ordered with this grip on it arrived today, of course, after I got back from the course. But just gripping it in the house, I am very impressed with the initial feel. Firmer than a TV but no where near too firm and pleasantly tacky. It’s what I imagine a TV wants to be when it grows up. Excited to get some real swings on it soon.

I never thought I would find a grip that would make me not miss the Z-Cords, but these did it. Firm but soft with enough tack to feel connected and not slip. I wasn’t sure I would like them as much as I do and I love the price point.
I replaced my Lamkin +2 hybrid with Calibrate to these True Icons. I add the thin grip rib strip to all of these because I cannot live without an underhand alignment. After 1 round and a range session in this set up I have 2 big positives and 1 big negative. The 2 positives are these might be the best non-slip grips ever made without the harshness of texture. And secondly, the butt end is so steep in taper for me, it actually fills my top palm better then ever without needing to go to midsize diameter.. Now the negative and it’s close to a deal breaker whether these stay or not…. These leave my hands very, very black after playing with them on. I wish I could post pics of my glove hand and bottom ungloved hand. It’s embarrassing that I have to go wash my hands after 9 holes now. It reminds me of when I tested the Karma brand grips on Amazon. They were like I had been playing in a black soil garden all day and so those Karma’s were a 1 and done. I’ll see if these Icons change after rounds 2 and 3 this weekend.
Besides the need for comfort I need my grips to be tacky and not slip. Today I played in a steady humidity of 87%+ and my clubs never slipped once. Even if I felt them slick a quick run down with my towel and they were back to being tacky and offering a solid connection to the club.
im glad I got a chance to try these because im not sure I would have otherwise
