Weekend Tour Wrap Up

This President’s Day weekend, a diverse group of ladies battled it out on Oahu’s North Shore in the SBS Open. SBS – the Seoul Broadcasting System, is a Korean company, so the format was different than what golf fans may be used to: three rounds, Thursday through Saturday, with the cut coming after play Friday. In this format, the tournament ended on Sunday for Korean viewers.

Angela Stanford (another 5’6”, fair haired Texan, I may be biased) took the lead in the first round, shooting a 65 (which would be the single lowest round of any player through the tournament). Michelle Wie would be nipping right at her heels, however, along with Yani Tseng. The weather on Friday, however, became a story in itself. Strong, steady winds and at times, piercing rain had players bracing. The born and raised Hawaiian Wie seemed to play with ease, and tied Stanford going into the final round. In the end, Stanford took the tournament, standing at -10. Wie was alone in second at -7, with Angela Park and Na Yeon Choi tied for third at -4. (Tseng ended tied for fifth, with Ai Miyazato, at -3.)

Over at Pebble Beach, Dustin Johnson and Robert Garrigus shot -7 for their first rounds, to tie for the lead. Retief Goosen looked like he may steal the show on day two, starting his day with an eagle on hole two (a three iron shot to eight feet of the pin) and holing a 70 foot chip on hole five (for an impressive birdie on a par three green). Like the ladies, Goosen’s second round would be the single lowest of the weekend, at 64.

Unlike the ladies, Goosen wouldn’t take the win…he would hit 74 for his third round. Johnson shot a third round of 67, giving him a four shot lead over the steady Mike Weir. But when inclement weather hit the California coast, enough to trigger measurable rain and topple forty foot trees on the course and, the final round was postponed until Monday. On Monday the decision was made to cancel the final round, and Johnson was declared winner for his second PGA Tour victory.

Champions Tour saw Mike Goodes get his first victory at the Allianz Championship. He shot -15, beating out Fulton Allem (-14) and Bernhard Langer (-12). Langer, who looks as if he never left the beach, is dominating the Tour with nearly twice the Schwab points of second place Mike Goodes. THP also looks forward to joining the Nationwide Tour and Duramed Futures Tour as they play in the coming weeks.
