Weekend Tour Wrap up

March 8, 2009

It was a fantastic weekend for international golf. Headed into the final round on the PGA Tour, Y.E. Yang held the top spot on the leaderboard, shooting a strong 68-65-70. (65 was the lowest round, matched by six other golfers, including fellow Korean Charlie Wi and American Ben Crane.) Yang shot 68 in his final round -9 and the win over the 2nd time 2nd place John Rollins, and Ben Crane. (It is Yang’s first win and highest placement over 20 on the PGA Tour, although he is tied for 8th for Eagles on Tour.)

Another Korean topped the board on the LPGA HSBC Women’s Champions event. Ji Yai Shin rebounded nicely from shooting over par in her second round, to end with a -11 tournament score on top of the board. Aussie Katherine Hull shot +2 on the fourth day (shooting par would’ve tied for the lead) for second, while Angela Park, Angela Stanford and Paula Creamer all tied for third with -8. (Stanford and Park both shot rounds over par during the run of the course: +1 and +4, respectively. The lowest round was 66, shot by Hull, Stanford, Karrie Webb, and Shin twice.) This is Shin’s rookie year and first win as a Tour player, though she is a phenomenal talent. She is the first non-LPGA player to win three events: the British Open, ADT Championship and Mizuno Classic, where she was the youngest winner. She was also the first Korea LPGA Grand Slam winner.

Over on Newport Beach, on the Champions Tour, Argentinean Eduardo Romero took his first win, over Americans Joey Sindelar and Mark O’Meara. Joey came from behind with a remarkable day four -8 (along with Japan’s Joe Ozaki, the tourney low score) that ended him only one stroke behind Romero. On the Nationwide Tour stop in New Zealand, New Zealanders Steven Alker, Josh Geary and David Smail finished 1-2-3, for the first “Kiwi” (New Zealander) winner of the event.

See You Next Week
