At THP, we believe that testing should be done not only by us, but also by golfers just like you. One of the cool features about being an active member of the THP Forum is that we look to you, the consumer, to give feedback on equipment to golfers all around the world. Each month we send out iron sets, drivers, hybrids, putters, trainings aids and golf balls to our active members to be a part of the THP Forum Member testing.
In May, five of our forum members, in addition to one of our staff writers, were given sets of the Wilson DynaPower Forged irons. If you haven’t had a chance to read our original review of these irons, it’s worth the time to get a sense of the technology and materials Wilson put into them. It’s our belief that, all things considered, the DynaPower Forged irons are among the top choices in player’s distance irons for 2024.
The DynaPower Forged offer a tempting combination of compact size, forged construction, top end distance, and forgiveness. What’s not to love? Well, we take that back. People will always find something to complain about, but still – at just under $1000 for a full set, these irons bring an incredible value/performance ratio. However, you don’t have to take our word for it. We invite you to read the thoughts of our forum members on the THP Forum.
Thoughts from our Testers
In the event you are unfamiliar with internet forums, please keep in mind that posters generally don’t use their “real” names, but rather use a unique username.
blugold – 40, 9 hcp from Wisconsin:
When discussing feel, blugold said, “To me, the iron head feels like it wraps around the ball and throws it. Especially the clubs with the Power Holes, they feel extra smooshy. I like it.”
He has found solid forgiveness and turf interaction, commenting, “I then hit an 8i a little heavy on the next hole. It landed on the front and ran off the back. I was really surprised how well the 8i retained ball speed on that bad of a shot,” and “I’m hitting some of the best shots from the rough as I have ever. It’s amazing how well these clubs are working their way through thick grass.”
tequila4kapp – 58, 16 hcp from Oregon:
tequila4kapp has enjoyed the forgiveness, distance, and feel of the Dynapower Forged irons.
On feel, he notes that, “pured shots gave a deep, dense sound / feedback. Loved them. Kind of almost reminded me of my Hogan PTx irons, which are the pinnacle of feel for irons I’ve played. High praise.”
When it comes to forgiveness, he commented, “The top line story for us hackers – guys who aren’t living in the middle of the face – remains the same. The irons are super playable and keep the ball in front of you, regardless of poor strikes.”
JW Smoove – 64, 16 hcp from South Carolina:
JW Smoove has played more rounds than perhaps any tester at this point and shared a very telling comment, saying, “These clubs have me continuing to be very excited about the game – the state of my own game, and eager to get out and play more.”
Specifically, he has enjoyed the distance and forgiveness, observing the DynaPower Forged were, “as much as a club longer closer to my old distances – and that is potentially game changing and a very pleasant surprise.”
As a player that suffers from the occasional heavy miss, he says, “Suffice it to say, these clubs DO NOT DIG – and I love that too. I tend to have a fat shot or two when I first start out and if I get over tired” … “they don’t go 50 yards, they go maybe 3/4’s of the way to the target – remarkable.”
tahoebum – 59, 3 hcp from Minnesota:
As a low handicap, tahoebum values a compact look and forged feel from his irons. He’s found a great deal to like about the DynaPower Forged in those categories. He shares that, “The sound is better(softer) than expected. These have a great, understated clubhead shape from all angles, and I like the old-school chrome finish.”
He has experienced ball flight that is not only long, but able to hold greens. He says, “The distance is easy with these, and the trajectory is high and soft. Spin is a bit lower than my Srixons, but the descent angle makes for perfect hold on the greens I play in Minnesota. My 8 and 9 iron approaches have been normally releasing 3-5 feet from their ball mark.”
PiratePenguin – 44, 14 hcp from Florida:
PiratePenguin has been impressed with how the DynaPower Forged irons look and feel. He notes that, “They are big enough at address to inspire confidence, but small enough to not feel big – really well shaped to minimize the footprint while maximizing playability and forgiveness. Nothing but praise for the look and feel all around.”
As a lower spin player, he has been trying to find the right ball to maximize his performance, but still has managed to put together some solid rounds of golf. He says, “I like the feel and forgiveness. Still not sure I can generate enough spin on my own to control them on less than perfect swings, but I’ll work on it with my coach this week and see what we come up with. It is nice to have a “bad” day and still shoot under par net.”
Jman – 40, 5 hcp from Oklahoma:
Jman, better known on our home page as THP Staff Writer, James Miles, is a lower handicap player that typically plays smaller cavity back irons.
He had some reservations about how the Power Holes would impact how the DynaPower Forged sounded at impact. Fortunately, those concerns were quickly set aside. He said (referencing the slotted irons), “I expected to really be able to sense the difference in sound/feel in a not great way…. but I didn’t get any of that.”
In fact, he found the feel something he enjoyed quite a bit over time, saying, “The sound at impact is pure crispy power. Not clicky or clacky, just really fun. Like, hit one solid and it makes you chuckle level of solid.”
If you know Jman, you know he carries a bit of speed. Time spent with the DynaPower Forged revealed an expected, but impressive, amount of distance. He noted, “234 carry out of the 4i. Good grief. Insanely long, and effortless feeling. It felt like I was just swinging smooth.”
Enjoyed the comments. Each of the reviewers did a great job of describing their experience with the irons.
