Back in late 2016, Wilson released their Tour V6 irons and they have been the mainstay for their players on the PGA Tour since that time. While the company has come out with numerous options since then, their stable of players including Paddy Harrington and Kevin Streelman have opted to continue to use this set. Today, they are announcing the Wilson Staff Model CB irons, which is inspired by the Tour V6.
Nearly 4 years in golf equipment release time is an eternity. Wilson is hopeful that the Staff Model lineage becomes more defined with the extension of a cavity back player’s iron to match the muscle back that has been out for a couple of years and used by Gary Woodland. That brings us to the new Wilson Staff Model CB irons and the evolution of the Tour V6.
“Wilson continues to strive to the make the best, most respected irons in the world,” said Jon Pergande Manager of Golf Club Innovation. “The Staff Model CB Irons are aesthetically pleasing to the elite player and with the new Tri-Brace stabilizer providing a structural connection between the topline and the central impact mass we have stabilized the topline enhancing the energy transfer to the ball while also providing improved sound and feel .”
The club head is 8620 carbon steel and the face is backed by what Wilson calls Impact Mass Area. Sound familiar? It was featured in the Tour V6 as well. This provides muscle back like feel with the cavity back design to give you a little added forgiveness and consistency without the loss of impact feel that is cherished in an iron this size.
The Tour V6 featured 20 grams of tungsten split heel in and toe in the long irons and centered in the mid irons to lower the center of gravity. The Staff Model CB changes that up a bit. Moving all 20 grams of tungsten to the toe of the long and mid irons to enhance stability.
Mentioned above from Jon Pergande, the Staff Model CB has something that immediately catches the eye in the cavity. It is what they call Tri-Brace stabilizer and we have seen that in a few different irons as of late in various forms. Having a more structurally sound club head is a good thing in an iron this size. The connection from ideal impact location to the top line will definitely alter sound and feel in a positive way.
For the loft peepers traditionalists out there, you will be happy to note that Wilson has kept the lofts that you are seeking. One interesting point is that the set is 7 pieces, meaning 4-PW only, but a 2, 3 and GW are available in custom orders.
This is a pretty early look however, with the Wilson Staff Model CB irons not slated to hit stores until January 15th of 2021. When they do, you will be able to pick them up at Budget Golf and use the THP Coupon on the right hand side of the screen for 15% off your order.

I’m in!!
i am in this thread…and on wilson’s page…i am not sure what’s gonna happen.
Duuude. You just bought a club to complete a set that’s not even built yet!
I know they’re pretty, but
and yet, here we are
Also, I highly encourage people to hit the D7 forged for fun. I’m on the hunt for a 4i to match the cb’s. What a fun club to hit!

Did customer service give you that ETA? I talked to them yesterday (ordered my set on March 4th) and they are telling me by the end of next week.

Very true…. except maybe for my Wilson Staff V6’s.

My miss is thin and they handle it very well. Very compact look at address. With so much tungsten in the mid irons, they have a pretty strong ball flight for being traditionally lofted. Impressive irons from Wilson.
I get mine next week (hopefully) and am glad to hear about them handling the thin misses pretty decently, as that is my miss as well.
I just got an update today than mine won’t ship until April 10th now, was really hoping to have them this week, you hearing anything new on yours?
Curious – Have you had your lofts checked? I finally found a dreaded review on youtube of these and they were coming in a bit strong from advertised.
Yeah, I had them checked when they were built. All set to Wilson standards. 7i came in at 34*.
Good to know! Now if only these clubs would show up in Calgary. To find a set of Wilson Staff irons anywhere is like finding a blue lobster.
are your courses open yet? I remember going to that artificial turf driving range out by Harvest Hills around Easter a few years ago, ground was still frozen so the balls were bouncing as high as I’ve ever seen and running forever
I believe one or two are, but the grass is still mustard powder coloured and do not look like anything I would want to hit off of!
What shafts did you go with for these?
I hit them this morning, and the 1/2" shorter just isn’t feeling right. I am going to contact them to let them know of the error, if I had the time I would have them fix it, but I have a golf trip next week, so I took them to a club fitter already, he is pulling 5-iron shaft and putting it in the 6-iron and on down the line.
What I love about these staff model cb’s is the transition from hosel to leading edge. They look so good at address. Little to no offset and nice straight leading edge. Just a fantastic looking iron.
Played my first round with them yesterday, first time off grass as well. Great feel through the turf, nothing amazing, but rips through it very nicely. These have a completely different feel at impact than my previous Fly Z Pro’s and MMC’s. It is soft as hell, but a heavy hit feeling to it is the way I can describe it. It feels substantial and stable at impact compared to those two and I really like it. Hit a few shots a groove or two down on the face and they did ok for me, some obvious distance loss, but not as much as I would have expected.
Easy to flight and work the ball. They just feel so damn good! Still need to dial in my distance gaps, but that will come with more rounds.
I hit some thin approach shots yesterday and they performed great. The tungsten on the toe really makes a difference. They feel really stable on mishits. Very impressed!
The salesman I spoke with on Saturday said that Wilson doesn’t have much market penetration because they have maintained their traditional lofts and spins, which is counter to what the rest of the market has done and therefore is not popular. I thought – what a contrived mix of fact and reasoning to try and explain why people don’t buy these beautiful irons.
Haha that sales person must not know many of their lines.
Not only is it not true, they have had stronger lofted irons as long as anybody on the market.
Buddy was FILLED with dubious claims, inaccuracies, and sweeping assumptions. I’m not sure I’ve ever been so put off as a customer.
Tell him to go look up the specs on the new D9 irons!
They felt good when I tested them. For my first round with them using a premium ball they felt very soft! Way softer feeling than when I hit them indoors. Very similar feeling to my old apex pro double dots.
That’s just a me thing. Heavier or more toe side weighting kind of works against me in ways sometimes. Took me a while to understand. They seem really nice though. I’ve kind of had my eye out trying to find them in someone’s bag here. Where I hit them they say they’ve only sold one set. Figure there has to be more out here than that.
Last time, just to lock in the feel memory…
You might be looking at the end of May or possibly June with Wilson if you ordered direct. So many companies are back ordered due to parts, especially certain shafts.
Took me a month to get mine. Saw on their site they are saying 2-3 weeks for custom orders, so that is pretty good compared to mine.
For me, the sound is great, flushed shots have that ripped sound to them, but maybe a touch quieter than the Mizuno MMC’s I came from. I especially notice the slightly quieter sound when standing and watching others hit my irons, but when over the ball it is not as noticeable, if that makes sense.
Still love the look of these over the ball. Size and shape work for me, good through the turf here, feel like a traditional CB that’s pretty solid… Just fall in with a lot of what I like. He said his were 1 strong, so ..33 in the 7, but man, side by side with my TCB’s was a pretty different flight. He had C-Taper 120’s in his, which I hadn’t hit in a bit either, so no direct shaft comparison with my IO’s. And that was a little crazy too. My IO 6.5’s, that everyone thinks seem pretty harsh, especially for something in that weight (115g), had WAY less wiggle than those C-Taper 120’s. I checked the label on his about 3 times and asked if they were soft stepped. Whole different kind of floppy to me and it was blowing my mind, because I used to play C-Taper. Anyway, I only mention it because there was an obvious difference on that and it might explain some of the ball flight differences. Which were – absolute ROCKETS with the Wilsons. I hit one, and asked him the lofts. I hit another and checked the shaft again, and basically on repeat from there. Wasn’t having any issues putting what I felt were fairly similar swings on them as with mine, despite the different shaft feels, but they were lower and boring as hell compared to my TCB’s. And noticeably longer. I would have loved to know what they were spinning.
Anyway, it was kind a smokeshow because of all that and a lot of joking around and good fun. They feel and look really good. I don’t see many of them out there, which seems a shame, but they do fall into a pretty select player category so it makes sense. For the price though they still seem like a pretty good deal to me.
