Back in late 2016, Wilson released their Tour V6 irons and they have been the mainstay for their players on the PGA Tour since that time. While the company has come out with numerous options since then, their stable of players including Paddy Harrington and Kevin Streelman have opted to continue to use this set. Today, they are announcing the Wilson Staff Model CB irons, which is inspired by the Tour V6.
Nearly 4 years in golf equipment release time is an eternity. Wilson is hopeful that the Staff Model lineage becomes more defined with the extension of a cavity back player’s iron to match the muscle back that has been out for a couple of years and used by Gary Woodland. That brings us to the new Wilson Staff Model CB irons and the evolution of the Tour V6.
“Wilson continues to strive to the make the best, most respected irons in the world,” said Jon Pergande Manager of Golf Club Innovation. “The Staff Model CB Irons are aesthetically pleasing to the elite player and with the new Tri-Brace stabilizer providing a structural connection between the topline and the central impact mass we have stabilized the topline enhancing the energy transfer to the ball while also providing improved sound and feel .”
The club head is 8620 carbon steel and the face is backed by what Wilson calls Impact Mass Area. Sound familiar? It was featured in the Tour V6 as well. This provides muscle back like feel with the cavity back design to give you a little added forgiveness and consistency without the loss of impact feel that is cherished in an iron this size.
The Tour V6 featured 20 grams of tungsten split heel in and toe in the long irons and centered in the mid irons to lower the center of gravity. The Staff Model CB changes that up a bit. Moving all 20 grams of tungsten to the toe of the long and mid irons to enhance stability.
Mentioned above from Jon Pergande, the Staff Model CB has something that immediately catches the eye in the cavity. It is what they call Tri-Brace stabilizer and we have seen that in a few different irons as of late in various forms. Having a more structurally sound club head is a good thing in an iron this size. The connection from ideal impact location to the top line will definitely alter sound and feel in a positive way.
For the loft peepers traditionalists out there, you will be happy to note that Wilson has kept the lofts that you are seeking. One interesting point is that the set is 7 pieces, meaning 4-PW only, but a 2, 3 and GW are available in custom orders.
This is a pretty early look however, with the Wilson Staff Model CB irons not slated to hit stores until January 15th of 2021. When they do, you will be able to pick them up at Budget Golf and use the THP Coupon on the right hand side of the screen for 15% off your order.
The Details
In Stores: January 15th, 2021
Cost: $999 for 7 pieces
Shafts: True Temper Dynamic Gold
Grips: Golf Pride Tour Velvet
The smart move if it were several hundred would be to cancel orders and send them a small gift card for their troubles of charging the card. When it hit every social media outlet there is and thousands of orders came in, it would be hard to do that. Especially considering how fast they would be devalued in the pre-owned market the minute people got them and were selling them or trading them in.
Then again, they have made some really bizarre decisions, and this is an honest mistake, that they let go way too long to allow this many to come in. It’s certainly "on brand" it seems as of late though, which is a shame.
then their social media posted “number 1 selling iron over labor day “! Haha
That’s what’s the most mind blowing about it to me, not that a mistake was made, that happens, but that it was up SO long.
They’ve already said there will be refunds, and can’t blame them considering it’s thousands of orders
Yes of course. That is honestly the only decision that makes sense. I am just thinking about the funny alternatives.
Hope it doesn’t unscrew and fall off. I take these types of mistakes as them accepting returns plus a 20% restocking fee.
first, I bet well over half the sets would be for sale as soon as they got them.
second, what a ridiculous expectation to get a full set of irons for the price of one club.
finally, I doubt these people have/would give Wilson a shot anyways.
It’s a great idea, but how tell mr opportunity that these irons are available for 500 and the guy who actually wants them and/or isn’t about to flip them that they need to pay full price…
not to mention they are flooding the secondary market with the same number of irons sets that could be sold lifetime ?

Yes got it a few days after the email
What a **** show this has turned into for Wilson
That is not a good resolution.
The concerning part to me is lack of response, but hopefully that changes with the message we put out. I would like to think it is an oversight, but when money is involved, that is a tough one. I was super hopeful that this would have been resolved quickly, easily and they might have even made some fans out of it.
It continues to go back to the take about messaging and communications.
When I purchased these irons, I whole-heartedly knew that chances were I wouldn’t get the clubs for that insane price! But, I just wanted to "test the water" and see what happened. When Wilson Golf cancelled the orders, I was 100% ok with that. Not a big deal really. I figured it would probably take 7-10 business days for my credit card to be reimbursed. Wilson was flooded with orders and I understand that it was Labor Day weekend, so I’m ok with the delay. But, now we are going on 2 weeks and radio silence! I am a big fan of Wilson. Friends of mine are the biggest Wilson fitters in NC. But, it’s hard to promote their products when the administrative side is just so incompetent!
Anyone who actually had money debited from their accounts should be receiving a Wilson gift pack of some kind. The cost of that would pale in comparison to the positive reflection for the brand.
Hi JC, thank you for reaching out. We are processing your guaranteed refund as quickly as possible. Reimbursement times vary depending on the form of payment selected at checkout. Regardless of payment type, we are working to ensure all affected customers receive refunds by the end of the week.
But with all of Wilson’s competitors, TGW can take custom requests to the manufacturer and the manufacture will ship the clubs with the request length and lie angle adjustments, the requested shafts, and the requested grips directly to the customer.
That goes for Callaway, TaylorMade, Titleist, Ping, Mizuno…just about everybody
Not Wilson. NO OPTIONS OFFERED.
If I WANTED to choose the Staff CB more than any of the others, this would possibly push me to Titleists or Mizunos.
I don’t want steel shafts. They make my hands swell by the back nine.
I only play wrap style grips.
I need 1º flat except for Mizunos.
See my point?
Wilson has made excellent golf clubs since the Dead Sea was perfectly healthy.
What’s their excuse for this?
This is just not acceptable.
It’s just what they’ve always done in their players CB releases, usually steel with two flexes. Nothing new for them.
Are they missing out? Maybe a little bit, but reality is they only sell a handful of sets compared to their GI options anyway, so offering a ton of options don’t make sense.
Still, this is just SUCH a bad look…on top of an already bad look. They’re just knocking it out of the park right now
Apparently they need a conference call with @GolferGal on how to manage payments.
I think this is the only thread connected to W/S this year. (Can’t remember how far back the ball subscription fiasco goes.) So many great brands are fighting for our business. This is mess of a company with no sense of responsibility.
I would think that Mizuno and possibly Cleveland would have to be up near there as well.
Halfway through the previous century, the BIG THREE were MacGregor, Spalding, and Wilson, with Wilson being acknowledges as the biggest. MacGregor and Spalding are no more, and Wilson is only the tiniest shadow of the powerhouse that it once was.
There has to be a reason for that. Or even several.
The Staff CB is a hell of a good golf club. from all reports, but there still have to be reasons for Wilson’s fall from grandeur.
They really had a prime opportunity to turn a negative into a positive customer experience. Instead, they just took the hammer and drove home the final nail in the coffin. Several folks at Wilson are asleep at the wheel.
I paid through Paypal as well and was refunded more than 2 weeks ago, so the excuse of having the delay be due to working through different forms of payment doesn’t hold up
Still waiting on my refund!!!

I read that and was like “he won 4 majors with CB irons”? That can’t be right.
That isn’t what it says.
Thanks? Obviously it’s not what it says. He won most of his majors before these irons were created
Obviously. He won most of his majors before these irons were created by a friend of mine.
At first, I was trying to figure out who the other 3 were to win with them.
Nice little play on words
Under? Or never on?

Don’t get me wrong, I think they’re fantastic looking clubs and I agree, I wish Wilson did a better job marketing these.
I’m ? certain they are nice. I also forgot about them. That’s the sad part.
Love the look and if they are anything like the D9 forged I get that they perform. The marketing is poor as is distribution but in my mind knowledge is king. I feel I get new irons that compete or beat irons getting 50 page threads on this board for about 1/2 to 3/4 the cost. The only real hurt I feel when buying is that I’m buying stock models then deciding if I need to have the altered or changed.
I have a friend in the market now who needs custom specs. I shared with him several popular models right now he can order for $1700 or a set from Wilson that I think will serve him as well or better for $900. He is choking at both costs as clubs have gone up so much since 2018 but I think he is alsw struggling with the wilson brand
That is such a good looking iron!
and there’s the rub…wilson does themselves no favors with how they’ve pushed their product.
wow a bit busy with words but a great looking club
