I'm sick to bloddy death of American yobs at golf tournaments yelling out ridiculous **** ! Watching the final round of the crowne plaza and I heard things like "MEATLOAF", "LASAGNE" etc etc yelled out almost at the same time as a player hit the ball. What's the point, I know Americans are all desperate for their 15seconds of fame, or may e its the love affair with food but this is ridiculous and brings the game down to a low level.
I know it may seem like an attack on Americans but I'm pointing out what a lot of people think/know.

It's just too bad Americans can't show the class and restraint of European soccer fans.

I'm not European and have no time for football/soccer thanks to the unsportsmanlike conduct of players these days, as well as the yobs that go hand in hand with the game. Unlike golf, football is known and almost expected to have idiot fans. Golf is a civilized game, these idiots yelling out this **** is just juvenile and annoying. Compare the behaviour of American fans to that of European fans at events like the Open Championship and you'll see what I mean. I'm at the point where I'd rather not watch golf on tv anymore.

Yeah we all hate it, it's annoying. But to say its Americans is a bit much. I have no idea of the race, creed or nation of origin these voices generate. It's not destroying the game it's annoying you during the telecast. We like to say there is one in every crowd.

I watched the back nine yesterday and didn't hear it one time.

To generalize that it only Americans I a bit much and unfair to a nationality. Yes, it's stupid, but American I not the only place it happens.

Are you talking about the long and proud history of European fans running across the golf course naked while people are trying to play during the Open Championship?

You do realize you can mute the TV and still watch, right?

Is there an event anywhere with a better behaved crowd than the masters?

I seem to remember that bubba Watson had a similar feeling towards European Tour fans.

It's just too bad Americans can't show the class and restraint of European soccer fans.

And in America, like Wake pointed out, we are trying to quell the scourge of golf hooliganism.

But then you'd miss Johnny Miller's grace and knowledge :bananadance:

These made me chuckle, good posts guys. :thumb:

Don't think it's an American thing, I think it's an idiot thing. I don't think it's AS common in European events, but I think it does to some extent.
Leave out the streakers / once a decade boozehounds, and it does seem it happens every tournament, nearly every hole. Isn't always drunks, either.

Young dopes with a bit of money who think they're funny. Unless it gets squelched and the behaviour punished, it'll only get worse...on both tours.

It does happen on the European Tour, its just the American fans are that much louder.

I just wish those pesky Americans would take up streaking.

Nobody disagrees with you. It is stupid and annoying. People are being defensive because you carelessly characterize all Americans in the same boat. In other threads at other times you would have seen this discussed, with common suggestions including escorting these people from the grounds.

Americans, the worst spectators ?

Or Lakers basketball fans.

That original statement is never gonna go down too well in a forum that is predominantly American. I would say that it's definitely the case you get a more boisterous gallery in the States. The get in the hole shouts have never bothered me to be honest. The U S A chants at a ryder cup drive me mad, but I suspect the olé olé olé chants from the Europeans fans are just as annoying for any passionate US fan.
Having moved from the UK to the US a couple of months back, I can see golf is a totally different game over here to how it is in the UK, which may go some way to explaining the different galleries.
In the US, it's far more relaxed. I see far many more people with a beer in the US than in the UK where I hardly saw anyone drinking on the course. There is none of the stuffiness on US courses that you get on a lot of UK courses. Again, in the US, if a group somewhere on the course hits a good shot somewhere, you are far more likely to hear the celebrations in the US. And whereas many courses in the UK won't let you play if you have the wrong coloured socks on, the US has no such daft rules.
I'm not playing municipal courses over here either, but private, albeit open to the public courses. I'm sure there are country clubs here equally as stuffy, but the golf I've experienced here is far more relaxed and inclusive than in the UK. It's way better and what golf should be like. And if that means the fans are more vocal when the PGA tour rolls into town, so be it.

When I saw the first post I didn't think this thread would stay around for long, especially with the sweeping statement about it being Americans.

I agree about the shouting but I disagree with it being any particular nationality. I suspect it might seem that way due to the different amount of coverage golf gets in the countries across the world, but there are people in every country and every sport that will act the same way thinking it is clever. Any shouting is probably more noticeable in golf due to the quieter nature of the sport, but you will always see idiots at football matches making gestures or even players provoking the opposition supporters, it is just a fact of life unfortunately

The issue I see with this thread is the appearance the OP has categorized all Americans together as the worst spectators, and on a National Holiday in the USA. It's simply an unfair statement and I would hope the OP would correct himself and apologize to those who have been offended. As far as the idiots who yell stupid things at various events, they are from all over the world and I would guess the majority of people don't care for it.

A long as the OP admits that European Soccer fans are 100x worse. I have never heard galleries make monkey sounds to Tiger. But seem to hear it weekly from Italian and Spanish crowds.

On that note, let's all have a pint :D

I agree, a nice cold drink (non-alcohlic for me) and forget about the generalisations in here sounds good to me

I'm actually going to make a snakebite with an apple ale and a Guinness

If only it were as simple as classifying stupidity by nationality. Sadly its very much a generalization and has little to do with where some one is from. No fans are quieter or more "well behaved" as Augusta National. Yet its in the US. Then you have the tournament in AZ where loud and crazy is not only allowed, but encouraged.

Many examples have been well laid out already, and some posts like Mark on the previous page have been through both and show differences and preferences.
