Big Break X - Michigan: The good, the bad and the ugly

That makes me 2 years older than him. That must mean I'm really really bad.

I only caught a couple of episodes so I can't comment too much about how good or bad it was. I'll have to tune in next season for BBXI.

honestly, you didn't miss much... last night was pretty nice, although skipping holes was annoying, in the sense that they went out and played golf. TGC spent WAY to much time during the season setting up obstacles and what not. Many of the contestants are "professional golfers" yet they consistently had to hit shots around skyscrapers, over flying planes, out of water haha

I was wondering what everyone thinks about Haymes and Bernie getting the PGA/LPGA exemptions.

Don't get me wrong, I really like Haymes and Bernie and I was rooting for them. Especially since Haymes missed the birth of his son, and because Bernie had to give up professional golf a few years ago because of money. But Haymes is a judge/lawyer with no aspirations of being a professional golfer, and Bernie has been competing for years.

In contrast, Hugo and Camila are actively competing. They are also probably more broke than Haymes and Bernie.

I think this may be an issue with the show. Did anyone else notice last night that when TGC did the promo for Big Break: Prince Edward Island (May '09), the prize was just money ($100k)? There was no mention of an exemption. Which begs the question, is it still a "Big Break", or just a competition?

honestly, a mistake... because Haymes (without a doubt) is going to get obliterated out there on tour. has he ever seen a 7300 yard course in a PGA style layout?

I could see a chance to particpate in a futures or mini tour event, or perhaps an year exemption, but the PGA Tour... not entirely sure about the talent pool they had on this season especially when compared to past seasons (two gloves is a perfect example).

What I would lie to see is truly a "Big Break" opportunity.

Pull in the same candidates: Nationwide, DFT, and mini-tour players. Make sure they are smart, attractive, charismatic, articulate, and truly have potential. None of these "bad guy" characters, or anyone brought in for "spice."

Here is what the winner gets:

  • A simple apartment in Orlando for a year.
  • One year paid access to a recognized instructor academy like Ledbetter, Harmon, Gilchrist, etc. with regular instruction and unlimited access to the facilities.
  • One year paid access to a recognized sports psychologist like Rotella or Winters.
  • One year paid access to a fitness trainer.
  • One year paid entry fees and travel expenses for Nationwide/DFT events.
  • One year car lease, or still give 'em the Beemer.
  • Sponsorship deal with Adams or whomever.
  • Dicks Sporting Goods prize package to keep the winner in balls and tees.
  • A little cash.
  • Paid entry fees to Q-School for the following year.
Basically, groom a candidate for Q-School. Then let's see how they do.

And hey, guess what? You follow them around with a camera for the next year and you have a whole 'nother show for TGC, you give the instructors and trainers invaluable advertising in exchange for their participation, and you generate interest in Q-School for the casual golf fan.

Seriously, why hasn't The Golf Channel contacted me about a job yet?

That all sounds so great but then what would they do with all the writers they currently have. Plus your idea sounds like it would actually work and that just can't happen.

A+++

I'd watch that for sure... man, that is a great idea

Harry, you just might have something there ;)
Can I help pick the players???

Finished up the interviews today and sad it's over. Haymes was particularly enjoyable. Sounds like they had quite a party last night. I wonder if he'll take time off to really prepare. It would be hard when you are a judge. But whatever he does out there, I'll be rooting for him. As for Bernie, I think maybe this really was a good Big Break example. She was there before. She's now re-energized to give it another try. I wish her all the best. Kim's there now; Tommy 2 Gloves made it; James N just got his card. Some of these BB'ers do have what it takes. They just need a little help.

Very good suggestion Harry. You've put a lot of thought into it. Well done. :good:

Big Break Withdrawal

Big Break Withdrawal

Although this was not one of my favorite seasons of The Big Break, I nonetheless get withdrawal after every season ends. Big Break: Prince Edward Island doesn't begin until May 2009.

After Big Break: Ka'anapali (one of my favorite seasons, even though Sam didn't win ), we had Highway 18 to keep us entertained :act-up:.

But I haven't seen any indication of another H18, or any other program, to bridge the gap until May. Anyone seen something that I haven't?

Well they do have to wait until it stops snowing on the east coast.....lol

Hwy 18, wasn't a fan, so if there isn't another one, fine by me.

Personally, I think Big Break: Whistler would have been hella-cool.
(that's right, I said hella!)

Ha Ha...I knew exactly what you meant:wink:

Exactly.

But seriously, how great would it have been? There are a bunch of courses, phenomenal scenery, and the competitors and crew could have stayed in the Village. And Whistler, known primarily for it's winter sports, could have gotten some serious publicity for its great (from what I've heard) golf. I can't imagine that Prince Edward Island is nearly as fun or scenic.

Really, Golf Channel, why haven't you called me yet?

Maybe they'll have the famous "red sand" in their bunkers......haha. Or maybe they're big spud eaters. Then again, they can always visit the home of Anne of Green Cables. Beats me why they chose PEI, guess we'll just have to wait til May to find out.

All kidding aside PEI has some beautiful courses. Check it out...

Click on the "what's new" tab........PEI and Golf Channel just signed 2 year agreement....interesting!!

Well, a series of events conspired to cut off the finale when I tried to record it last week, meaning I had to avoid this thread, Gayle's blog, Charlotte's blog, the TGC website, Facebook, and all the other assorted sources of spoilers until TGC finally decided to replay the finale this afternoon. But now I know! So congratulations to Haymes and Bernie. Great couple of people, and I'm happy for them. That said, I went on record early with my belief that Hugo and Camila were the most talented team. I agree that Haymes is going to have his lunch handed to him. That's no insult, mind you -- we're talking about the PGA Tour, and he's been nothing but up-front since day one that he was playing for Bernie's dream of a return to the LPGA, not any long-term goal of his own (and Bernie may actually have a shot at making the cut assuming she can get her game on before next year). I also agree that the decision to cut up the match play, including some holes where the lead changed, was highly irritating. The narrator's voice, a necessary fiction imposed by the decision to broadcast an incomplete match, was way overdone and somewhat cheesy; on that note, I felt the same way about the heavy-handed character-typing of the teams this season, but I admit to having a bit of a thin skin for being patronized. I really think the problem this season was in the concept itself: finding 5 or 6 actual "couples" -- however you define it -- who are suitable for television and both able to play at the highest level of golf was simply an insuperable challenge. As such, I look forward to the return of regular BB set-up, where the casting is not artificially constrained beyond the standard requirements for American television. (Let's face it, if they were selecting talent based on golf skill alone, the casts would look nothing like they have, especially the ladies -- for better or worse.)

Harry, I like your idea a lot, too -- it's Coyne's Paper Tiger turned into reality TV, and we all know how well the book sold. Only in this instance TGC wouldn't be limited to using an out-of-shape writer with an above-par handicap as its lab rat. One might argue, however, that the $60K after-tax value of the cash prize in BB XI-PEI serves basically the same purpose, assuming the winner opts to use the money to advance his or her golf career. Indeed, if one of the women wins, she need not even rent an apartment herself; she could just move in with Charlotte and Bri and make it the official Florida home of golf-reality-show winners past!

I do hope something fun is put up before next Spring. Even if it's just another marketing program for Hank Haney.

Take me to the Dress Barn and point the way to the make-up, wigs, and skorts!

Harry, you make me laugh!

Sadly, I would still get my arse handed to me . . . and I would love every minute of it!

If there was a legs contest though, I think I could take 'em once I shaved. My stems are fabulous!
