We have some threads similar but not an all encompassing one. With so many passionate about it, I figured it was time.

Place to discuss the products, process and share tips and tricks.

I recently moved and the lawn at the new place is a mess. Tons of dandelions and chick weeds. Lots of bare, thin spots. It really needs aeration and re-seeding but it’s too late in the season to start that now. I realize how little I know about proper care and feeding so I hired a lawncare specialist who did a soil test and will be treating for weeds and fertilizing as needed on a regular basis over the summer and doing aeration in the fall.

Got a new edger that also uses our Greenworks batteries. No more line trimmer to do the edge. My goodness it’s 100x faster and easier.

I am very much interested in this. I love a green lawn but suck at keeping it that way and weed free. Part of that is just because of environment. But, the rest is very much lack of knowledge and I will admit effort.

Just finished dethatching and scarification. Just got the electric SunJoe AJ805E and it has both attachments. What a time saver and plenty of power. Bag is a pain as it's small but I prefer many dumps in a pile on driveway than to raking it all later. Can just run the mower over the yard and it gets the remnant's if thatch.

Scarifier is mainly for overseeding as it will create little trenches (try for 1/2" deep myself) for better dirt contact. It will pull up the heaviest thatch and even go through clay. Be careful not to run over big roots as it can damage the gears.

Picked up 5 55G bags of thatch a few weeks ago. Then scarified another 6 this last weekend.

Put a chemical brew together to prevent weeds while letting my overseeing take hold. 18 bags of soil, fertilizer, moister control on top. Perfect timing as we've had rain about every day since I out it down. Sprinklers will come on tomorrow to help.

They said to wear latex gloves and I forgot, had a different kind. Reason being you need to add a blue dye to it to see where you sprayed as to not put too much down. Will make the grass white for a while but won't kill it if you do my mistake.

Also have a sanctuary mix that golf courses use I guess and going to apply that in a week or two.

More later.

I use a nice weed spray hooked to a hose and nitrogen spray as we move into season. Along with sprinkler system twice a week.

Looks fantastic!

I also love all the brick houses... Just not something we see up here, unfortunately.

Just walked in from mowing and saw this. Love it
My grandfather worked for Scotts all his life so it's been ingrained in my brain since early on about maintaining a nice lawn. Ours was a train wreck when we moved in, but after a few years of care, it is really coming alive.

I do Triple Action Turf builder in early April, Weed and Feed around now, Summer mix mid July, Thick 'R Lawn in Sept, and Winterguard just before Halloween

Have aerated once, but it is probably due for another this year since we didn't do it last year.

My yard is lumpier that bad oatmeal. Not patchy, just severly uneven. My lawn mowers should have long-travel shocks:oops: For those in the know, what's my best attack plan? Aeration? Spread topsoil over everything and rake? Both? Something else?

With a drought being declared for NorCal I won't be able to participate in this thread. ;) :censored:

It's warmed up enough overnight that I would reseed the thin spots in the deeply shaded areas, as well as, use weed and feed on the rest of the lawn. Hypothetically speaking of course. :eek:k:

Early morning view of where I get to do my lawn care. Have 1 1/4 acre total, about an acre mowable.

I mow with a 52" Scag Patriot. A pro-sumer model fitting in between residential and commercial. I also have a Bluebird tow behind aerator and poly roller to help level the lawn. I use an EGO+ string trimmer and blower for clean up.

I typically do a Speing pre emergent apllocation for weed prevention, but I'm trying to slowly use less synthetic fertilizer so I skipped this year. I'm spot spraying weeds with a hand pump sprayer, so far keeping them under control.

Goals are to introduce some newer cultivars of grass that require less fertilizer and water. Tried to overseed entire lawn 2 years ago, with ok results. Rain didnt help, and it was too much to keep watered. Going to pick the areas that need it most, keeping it and overseed this fall, while keeping it manageable.

What models do you have?

I'm looking to swap to battery operated on my weed whacker, blower and need to get edger. Was thinking Milwaukee M18 because I have a couple of those tools already 🤷🏼‍♂️

If you have the tools with batteries, staying in the same brand makes sense. You can buy tools only, or just get more batteries.

60v Greenworks.

we use the mower, trimmer, blower and now edger. Also have the snow shovel, but have not used it.

I’ve been holding off on pre emergents for about a year to let overseeding take well. This weekend Im finally going to hit my lawn with it. I’m hoping I didn’t wait too long to get the crab grass. We had virtually zero last year.
it will be my first time spraying this.

perfect. Thank you !!

I have a Greenworks string trimmer.... great product, and must be on their mailing list... Just saw they manufacture a fully electric Zero Turn mower. Up to 12 acres a day on a single charge.... Now, they're "only" between $13-$16k each  I'm not in the market, so not sure how new this product is, but this is the first time I've seen a commercial grade electric ZT mower offered. I'd be curious to see one in action.

OH, best part of the electric string trimmers vs gas? You can actually run one for quite a while then go inside, pop a cold beverage and drink it without your hands shaking like mad from the gas trimmer vibration and feeling like you'll spill half of it before getting it up to your mouth!!

I killed a smurf today also.

The lawn is so thick! I edged, trimmed, and cleaned up the beds today.

My front acre is mostly zoysia it's beautiful and great to walk in but a pain to grow in certain spots and if cut thin it really shows. I fight a battle between too thin and thin enough to look like it's been mowed. We have trees lined on the sides and zoysia really struggles to grow in the shade. The middle and back 2 acres are mixed grass. 20210515_182228.jpg
The top light on my street lamp has a bad bulb connector, it's on my list for summer projects.

The yard is looking a lot better thanks to last year's effort. There are still a lot of weeds and spots where the grass seed didn't take, but it looks so much healthier than it ever has. There is still a long way to go but I'm hoping it'll get a little better every year.

I had the time in 2020 and used the stimulus money to have the soil tested and invest in what was needed. Went with organic fertilizer, invested in a quality spreader and a tow-behind de-thatcher and plug aerator.

Now all I need is a new walk behind mower for the areas that the rider can't reach. Looking at a Honda for the gas option or the Greenworks if I go electric.

The Greenworks people really love their electric mowers. I can vouch for the reliability and cut quality of the Honda.

I have the HRX 217 series with a 190 cc engine. It replaced an HRX 215 series mower with a 135 cc engine. The 215's plastic deck cracked at one of the wheels after about twelve years - a known issue. Given that, I decided to replace the mower for a little more than the cost of repairing the old one. The new one doesn;t have the deck problem, and it hasn't bogged down unless I'm doing something crazy like mulching a huge pile of leaves. The older one would choke on a tall lawn.
