Overrated Equipment

or in a thread I did a little while ago about people having a certain totally irrational dislike of certain companies and in a lot cases without having even tried their products.

As a reminder mine were Srixon (the name bugs me) and Adams (reminds me of crap clothes company in the UK and I hate the logo)

Exactly. The thing is, I understand everyone is going to have some loyalty to whatever company is in their bag, especially if they are playing well. Also certain brands turn certain people off for whatever reason. I guess my question is how can you "correctly" rate a certain company without bias and without a category? For instance, if I stated I thought Taylor Made was overrated, but I had only demoed their Burner 2.0 Irons and I am a 6 handicap or lower, well yeah obviously I might not like those clubs - as they aren't fit to me or where I am at with my game right now. Now if I stated I didn't like TM and had hit all of their better player line up, then that is validated somewhat.

I think these threads just end up being "what brand or club don't you like" more than anything else.

And honestly - I realize I'm somewhat of a contradiction - at least in my bag as I currently game a max game improvement driver and 3 wood - better player hybrid and better player irons. I guess it is whatever works best.

I think PING have the best drivers in the business by miles over everyone.

I always thought that better meant what made someone score better?
I mean onset is no different as an assistance tool as offset.

Srixon is bad but Ping is OK??

I mean c'mon......Ping??

Sounds like a noise a bad small engine makes or a waiter at a chinese restaurant.....(no offense to Chinese, waiters, or Chinese restaurants..)

Very true. And as you have stated before JB - all of the major OEM's put out products they believe in. They put the money and the research into them and wouldn't mass produce something they didn't believe in. Does that mean some things will work better than others for certain people? Of course. But does that mean something is "Overrated"?

Only two clubs/oems stand out above the rest; what you have now, and what you're going to get later. jmho

As far as being overrated, why all the focus on Ping? I am not defending them as I dont have a lot of experience with their product, I am just curious. There seems to be a lot of comments about them being overrated but not a lot of reasons. I think it would be great to understand more why you guys feel that way.

I have hit their irons and their putters. I liked neither. It is that simple.

I have no problem with Ping equipment whatsoever or any other brand for that matter.

I was just using them as an example for not liking because of a "bad name"...

Sounds like the noise off my club face :D
To be honest I did a blind test when trying out for irons. The pro taped the faces and randomly handed me the clubs and from Ping G15, TM Burner 2.0, Mizuno JPX-800 and Callaway Razr X I had to rate each club. The Pings came out much better for me....I wanted the TM 2.0 or Callaways originally

PING catches heat for their prices quite often.

I could be completely wrong here, but For me I just feel like they change the name but not too much else when the release clubs. The shaft offerings are below average as well

Tap tap taparoo

Completely agree. I was really hoping with their new line that they would add aftermarket shafts as stock options and they only did it with the anser wedge and the spinner. It seems like every other company right now has gone that direction - pretty sure JB mentioned this as well as some others in the G20 thread. If there is one thing that bugs me about them that would be it. Having to pay a $100 up charge for a shaft that most other OEM's offer as stock pretty much sucks.

Scotty Cameron putters. I dont think there is anything more overrated out there. I try one each time I go into Golf Galaxy if they have a used one thats not locked up and have never ever thought "Wow that putter feels good". I just dont see it with these putters.

My thoughts exactly.

+1,000,000!

Its ALL marketing with scooter crameron. Not to mention that, I cannot stand them for all of the things he has "borrowed" form other companies (T.P. Mills trademarked site oval anyone? SeeMore like 3 dots behing the hosel? The list goes ON and ON).

Scooter is a FANTASTIC marketer, there is no doubt about that, but the "Cameron Army" treats him as if a demi-god and don't you DARE say anything critical of one of his sticks anywhere other than THP. Its a shame so many have missed out on such amazing putters all because they want to play what the pro's are PAID to play.

Good point.
Cough RAPTURE cough

In defense of the Rapture line " ................ (crickets chirp in the background)" Well maybe ".................(wolf howls in the distance)"

Let us not forget the Casanova putter.
