This shaft choice thing is driving me mad...

I'm heading down south and might be able to talk the wife into stopping at a shop. i was at a huge superstore in LA last weekend, but just couldn't get my shoulder working and so couldn't hit at all. Total bummer

As a side note, instructor just had a set of mizuno mp54 and m4 combos given to him by Mizuno. He let me hit those and, wow, when you catch one right, they are amazing. Alas, I don't possess that swing just yet :)

Hey Guys..

Went back and hit more shafts under instructor supervision. Complicating this is that my shoulder is really bugging me and takes forever to get warmed up. It's impacting my consistency...

However, I hit the Dynalite XP, Project X 5.5 and 6.0, and the s300. The PX 5.5 was the winner. The 6.0 actually wasn't that bad either, but he liked the ball flight of the 5.5 the best. It also gave me good feel: I'm coming from a POS light R shaft that is whippy, so the s300 just felt a bit too heavy. The XP too light and high ball flight. The 6.0 and s300 were slightly too low in flight. The 5.5 was a good compromise of all factors.

Now, on to committing to a head and picking a grip. I hit the ez forged today and nobody around here has the 714 ap1's. I've only hit them 1x and it was cold and miserable outside. It may just come down to looks and more reading. I'll probably do a +1/64 over standard for grip. any opinions on those 2 heads are welcome.

Thanks again for the help. Maybe for the next set I'll look into the Nippons..

That's great. The 6.0s beat my hands up pretty bad. The 5.5s are a great choice though. Good kuck with the shoulder.

Tapping away on my Galaxy 2 Note

Ok, first time hitting these clubs and shaft combos on a monitor. Unfortunately, the Roger Dunn shop went to didn't have the PX 5.5 for the AP1. So, we're getting apples and oranges going here. I didn't pay / do an official fitting with them, as I knew what shaft / heads I wanted to hit. Took about 20min. The tech also took out some of my fat mishits from the numbers (was he supposed to do that?).

Some background for those who don't want to read the whole thing: Currently 15 handicap. Fitted at local muni club with Mizuno cart. SS 90mph on optimizer with 4's and 5's. Optimizer said PX 6.0 / s300 / KBS Tour Stiff. With swing coach watching, PX 5.5 ended up looking the best and feeling like I was getting some kick.

So, this session:

AP1 with s300 Dynalite
AP2 with PX 5.5
EZ Forged in PX 5.5

I don't know how to read launch monitor results properly, but my thoughts: Disperson was best with AP1. Spin numbers were best with the ap2, but not good enough with the EZ, right? Feel was, of course, best with AP2, but worst dispersion, as expected. I like the looks of the AP1 color scheme better, but not significantly more. I realized today that I really like more feel. When I hit the AP2 well, man, that felt great. I felt like the AP1 was more 'dead' or just didn't provide enough feedback, at least compared to the EZ forged. I've had a left pull going in my swing for a bit lately, so not sure how much of the #'s is my swing flaw(s) or the clubhead/shaft combo. How meaningful is it that the "offline" numbers are so much better with the ap1 w/ a s300 dynalite shaft vs. the px 5.5 in the other 2? We he deleted the big mishits of each club - should he not have done that? Should I have hit a bunch more of each combo?

So, at this point, I'm beginning to wonder if I should just shell out the $125 and get iron fit at a speciality shop in the Bay Area. Out of loyalty, I won't buy the clubs from them (buy local), but I'm thinking I might be missing something just going with the EZ's and px 5.5, no?

I see you're in Chico... Instead of going all the way to the bay there's Haggin Oaks out in Sac...here's their link with fitting options: http://www.hagginoaks.com/player-performance-studio-2/

Also, I went through a fitting not too long ago and the fitter removed the biggest mishits too. At the end of it all those mishits just screw up the averages.

funny you would say that...just booked a fitting with them for 1/2/14. Was going to do irons / woods, but may just do irons / putter. We'll see.

In the meantime, I found this place:

http://www.bayonetblackhorse.com/club/scripts/section/section.asp?NS=DEMO

apparently, they do a free demo day on weekends. However, when I called the shop, it sounds like they do full club fittings at the event and the fitting is complementary if you make a purchase. I really wanted to buy from my local club, so that screws that up a bit. I'm on vacation with the fam and got wife clearance to drive the 3hrs on Sunday for a fitting, if I want, but I'm not sure how I'll proceed. If I go over there, it would be silly to leave $100+ on the table by not ordering with them, but I've been talking with the people I know really well at my local course about clubs for weeks. Argh.

Maybe just buy woods from them and see if they'll still waive the fitting...

why can't my local club have a launch monitor...

Where are you vacationing? If Seaside is 3hrs away, sounds like you're close to the Bay Area... is Walnut Creek near you? If so, here's another option for you:

http://www.keplersgolf.com/fitting/

I did a driver fitting with them... they do fittings on a LM for $50 for 1hr hitting indoors into a net.

When I went through Haggin Oaks for my irons, I just went for a basic fitting. It's done on the range so you can see ball flight... pretty awesome. Their other fittings with the Launch Monitors are done indoors, in a hitting bay, out onto the range... so you get to see ball flight and compare numbers. I went back a second time before pulling the trigger and they let me hit the Super S irons and hybrids there briefly to compare numbers against my old set.

Just some suggestions from places I've been to... maybe one of them can help save a 3hr trip for you and even a little cash.

currently at the in-laws in Bakersfield. Thanks for the recommendations. I've had the "basic fitting" outdoors w/ the mizuno cart, but was looking to see some numbers on a monitor as well.

I just talked to a guy at Bayonet / Black Horse in Seaside and I think I'm going to make the trek tomorrow. It's pretty far, but it's a day away from the in-laws, so there's that motivation. :)

Their deal is that the fitting (which sounds like the Haggin Oaks level of club fitting) is complementary if you make a purchase (Haggin Oaks just takes a portion off). If you don't, they will give you the specs to take with you for about what the Haggin Oaks fitting costs.

I need a bunch of stuff, so I'm going to go for it and see how it works out. Maybe I'll offer to the pro to write a review here in exchange for my iron specs :)

I'll report back. Thanks again for the references..

I used to play Bayonet and Black Horse when they were Army courses on Fort Ord. Think Monterey.
