I've always had three rules for remakes:

1. Don't redo your own song. (Elton John. Eric Clapton. You killed Layla, you jerk.)

2. Don't redo a song unless it's in a different genre. (Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You," Janis Joplin's "Me and Bobby McGee," both re-makes of old school country.)

3. Don't redo a song unless enough time has gone by. (Many examples of this, like Joss Stone's "Fell in Love with a Boy." Patience is a virtue.)
