Garmin Approach G6

The print doesn't really look any smaller than on the SGX, so not sure if you used one of those or not, but I don't think it will be an issue, but everyone's eyes are different. But again haven't used it in game as of yet

I wear progressives most of the time as well, but take them off on the golf course. I have no problem reading mine at all, and it stays on my push cart all the time.

If you can read that, you can read the real thing. (photo is smaller than real device)

I've been using my G6 for about two weeks now and like it a lot. It is easy to read even without my reading glasses (which I need for reading books, newspapers, small print). I want to make a suggestion to anyone contemplating buying one or those already carrying one: shortly after getting my G6, I had it on its included plastic locking clip on my belt. Then on the course after using on a couple of holes, I reached down and found it was missing!! Luckily, I was able to drive the cart back along my route and able to find it. Since then, I don't trust the belt clip locking mechanism to hold the G6 securely. Not wanting to carry it in my pocket for fear that I would scratch the face although I do have a protective screen installed and also to avoid its moving the display around to other info/holes in my pocket, I found a great belt clip on Amazon - the Milan Extra Small Universal Horizontal Cell Phone Case / Pouch / Holster with Belt Loop. It is the perfect size for the G6 and it's padded inside, has a magnetically secure flip top, and a convenient finger hole on the bottom to push up the G6 to remove it from the holster easily. Significantly to me, it has two belt loops (capable of up to a 1 1/2" belt) and a clip on the back. I highly recommend it for easy, secure carry and retrieval on the course! Best of all, it is only about $8 plus shipping. Cheers,

Screen Timeout

Screen Timeout

Hi,

Just played my first round with my G6 yesterday and loved it! My friend has an SG5 and probably put it on Ebay 10 mins after the round so he can get a G6!
Anyways, only issue; the screen doesn't seem to want to shut off after the preferred number of seconds I select in the setup. I've tried 15, 30, etc, I rebooted at some point during the round, but regardless, the screen always stays on.

Anyone?

Have you updated it? You want to go to Garmin and register, then grab Garmin Courseview Updater. That will update your firmware and apply all the current fixes.
If that doesn't get it you may want to call Garmin.

...and Welcome to THP Jop!!

Jop, that doesn't sound right. I have my screen set to dim after 15 seconds, and it works. If the screen stays bright all the time, your battery life will be severely affected. If Tedfroop's suggestion of updating the firmware doesn't work, I would contact customer support or return it as defective. Out-of-the-box, mine worked fine--it didn't even need a course download, as it was up-to-date.

One more thing I found yesterday. It always disturbed me that I had to connect/disconnect the device from my computer for it to connect via usb.

I found in my case a longer cable than the original footlong fixed that and it connects when plugged in the first time. I just used an old camera or phone cable whatever it was.

Hi Guys.
Has anybody the same scorecard issue? Play a course that has not IN Par 36 and not OUT Par 36 and look in the history at this scorecard. First it looks alright but the next day the course will be Par 36 + Par 36. The Par of each hole is correct, but the summing is wrong. Software is 2.60.

Odd stuff, if you look here at the change log it appears to have been fixed. If it isn't I would call or email Garmin support.

Seeing as how the unit gets used out in the sun for the most part I turned my screen brightness down to 50%. After a 4 hour round I had 89% battery remaining!!

Hi.
Unfortunately this bug is not fixed. Round played 07/07/2012 and screenshots from 07/08/2012 (1 day later without changing anything). The G6 has just been turned off, recharged and turned on the next day.

When i checked the details yesterday (day of play) it was correct :confused2:
I informed the support and i hope they can fix it with the new release of the firmware.

Too bad. I can not add scrennshots

Welcome to THP anyway Walden!! No need for screen shots, I have seen it happen.

Well the season is about over for most of the country. Now that you have used you G6 all summer, how do you like it? I have a Callaway UPRO MX+and fight with the touch screen. Looking for a good replacement that is easy to use and easy to see with my poor vision. Thanks.

I am fairly new to the G6. I replaced a Sky Caddie SG5 with the G6. One issue that I'm having is with a local 9 hole course that I love to play. The course is designed with two sets of tees. You can play the front tees on the first 9 and then play the back tees on the second 9 for a total of 18. My SG5 would automatically consider the #1 tee on the second 9 as hole #10. But the Garmin say the round is over at 9 and I have to start a new round. This also seems to cause a problem with the scoring as well. I can read the score card on the direct file when attached to the computer, but after the day of the round, I can see the scores on the actual G6. Very weird.

In either case, how do you all handle 9 hole courses? I have sent Garmin an email and no response so far. But I'm thinking they just need to edit the map. For example there is another course that has 27 holes, (you play one of two front 9s and then a common back 9. They have this listed as three different 27 hole courses). So I'm think the 9 hole needs a similar treatment.

Really like the everything about the G6, and don't miss the fees of the SG5, but hope there is a fix for this 9 hole thing.

dbdors, Garmin releases periodic updates to their courses. With a little luck, they'll take your input for their next update. I've never submitted anything to them, so I don't know how responsive they are. I believe they do their maps based on satellite imagery, so they would likely have no way of knowing how your 9-hole course is arranged (until you informed them).

I've been quite happy with my G6 so far, but I've never used it on a 9-hole course. I hope Garmin is able to clear up your problem.

Well, unfortunately this is the sad response I received from Garmin this evening:

"I will be happy to assist you. If the 9 holes are separated on the device unfortunately there is no way to combine them as one round. I do apologize for the inconvenience."

That really doesn't make sense and it sucks. There have to be hundreds of 9 hole courses in the U.S. I know of at least 3 with in 20 miles of where I live.

There should be a way to decide whether you want to play a 9-hole course as a 9-hole round or an 18-hole round. That would be a great addition to their software. The way they worded the answer, "if the 9 holes are separated", almost makes it sound like that option is there. I don't have the latest software downloaded, but I couldn't find any such option.

However, it shouldn't really make that much difference--the stats tracking capabilities of the G6 are not that great because they don't span rounds and aren't very comprehensive. I recommend software or a website for stats purposes. You can then just enter two 9's as one 18 hole round (although make sure the stats software supports that). If you played each 9 from different tees, you might be hard-pressed to find software that allows different tees for the same hole during the same round, though. Garmin might not be alone in coming up short there.

Issues with a stats app is what's really driving my issue.

I purchased a copy of Approach Stats 2.0. But the 9 hole course gave it fits and it wouldn't download the round. The developer was great and refunded my money. But I still only have the XML viewer that Garmin provides on the unit.

Do you know of other stats apps or websites that I can download scores too?

I had researched apps and websites, but I didn't end up going that route (yet). I got a membership at a course last year, which gave me an account on the RCGA website (I'm in Canada, so I guess it's the equivalent to the USGA). It had a bit of stats tracking, so I just used that. I don't recall what my research showed, but there were a couple that kept coming up as well recommended. If you do some searches you might get a feel for what ones people prefer. Maybe start with a forum search on this site. I think oobgolf was one that kept coming up. Good luck finding something that works for you.

If ya got a android, oobgolf (free version ), that what I recommen. Also along with the website to tie all in.
Ps. They're is a THP group on there

Does anyone know the purpose of the port next to the USB mini-port?

I have not been able to figure out what it is used for. I know it is a micro SD card slot. I have an extra 8 Gb card that I installed in my G6, but it does nothing. At one time I thought you could load background pictures but that doesn't seem to work either. The manual says nothing as you likely know.

Hi!
Hope this thread is still open for questions... if not: SorrY!

Anyway, just was wandering what your local club / R&A says about the G6 (and the latest G5 firmware update): are they officially allowed for tournament or not?
Any idea...?
As far as I understand the rule 14-3 at least the G6 is disqualified because it is able to suggest your next club, based on earlier "shotlength averages".

Thanks in advance for any feedback!

I contacted Garmin about this and this is their response. Hope it clears things up.

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

Garmin's Approach series for golfing is compliant with the United States Golf Association's (USGA) rules and regulations.
The Approach G5 and G6 offer the ability to record club averages, but will not be displayed on the device while in play. The Approach will display the club averages only when the round is completed round and 24 hours have passed. This is in compliance with USGA Local Rule 14-3.
Please reply if you need anything more.
