The gel shot regimen that went through was a series of three, one week apart. This ended in late June. I was told no follow up needed until Dec. then a reassessment. There is also a 5 shot protocol. Other than 2 shots, no idea what the difference is. Were you getting pain shots or gel shots? Thanks for the link!!
My first TKR was in March 2014, so my shots started years before that. They were "gel" shots, hyaluronic acid, but I was given only one shot at a time and told I could not have shots any closer than 6 months apart. I don't recall any kind of "series" of shots being offered or available at the time. Like @AndyL0711 said, it is major surgery but still considered elective. As a result, I had to go through just about every test imaginable to make sure that I would survive an elective surgery. I'm not sure if that is still the protocol.

Recovery was initially tough at times, but I have no regrets having had both knees replaced. Even though X-rays showed my left knee in worse condition from the arthritis, it was the pain in my right knee that drove me to it. I could not complete my follow through when swinging a golf club due to the pain. There was no way I was giving up playing golf! I was back to swinging a golf club on the range, starting with chipping and putting, I would say about 6 weeks after each surgery, but was not cleared to actually go out on the course until just about 10 weeks after. My surgeon's concern was me falling, maybe getting into or out of a trap, or slipping on wet grass. A fall onto the knee early on could prove to be problematic.

i am having knee replacement surgery next tuesday. i am nervous but very excited. i have not picked up a golf club in nearly 1.5 years, just can't swing through anymore, hoping this will help that. must importantly is being able to run around with my daughter, which i can not do right now.

just looking for some helpful tips on do's and don'ts from those that have had it or know someone who has. things you did that helped and things you wish you would have done or should not have done.

weird to think that i only have 5 more days of work then i am done for the year. lots of THP'ing coming up

Good luck to ya. After your surgery, stay on top ( be committed) of your PT during and after. It really helps.

You have probably heard this a ton but dont do the surgery unless you are going to attack PT. It is that important.
Agree, 100%. My old orthopedist would not do a surgery if you were not committed to PT. The one reason I’m delaying is knee PT is terrible compared to hip PT.

I am actually going to try some PT now, see if there is anything that can ease this pain, mostly on stairs.

The PT is tough and satisfying at the same time. I dreaded going but felt great after....and very very sore.

It's crazy, the day after surgery I felt great, knee was bending well and I was walking around. I thought, man I got this. Then I went home the next day and the block wore off.....now that is pain I have never experienced before and I have had 7 other surgeries. It made me question my decision. I'm still questioning it a little.

You can forget sleep....you can forget going to the bathroom since pain meds stop that. Oh the joy.....

Had a setback this week. Not sure what I did or what happen but I'm having a tough time putting weight on my leg/knee. All of the sudden sunday night I started to get a bad ache right above my knee cap. Figured maybe I over did some PT but I really didn't do much that week. It's 5 days later and I'm still having pain and weakness. Actually fell in my hallway Tuesday night when the knee gave out. Sucks to fall in front of your child and see them cry.

Anyone else ever have this happen to them?

Hey fellow knee replacers.....do you have to do anything special with tsa? Flying soon and don't feel like getting a full cavity search with then thinking I'm smuggling something ;)
I just let the TSA agent know that I'm requesting the full body scanner due to TKRs. Never had an issue with it.

The only knee pain I've had since TKR is patella tendonitis (minor ache), which sadly enough isn't going away any time soon. You might want to visit your ortho doc to make sure there's no major issue.

JW Smoove, sorry to hear about your setback and the unfortunate fall. While I experienced daily knee pain while walking , stairs etc. It go to the point where every step hurt and my legs had actually started to bow ever so slightly. My specialist told me it due to compensating with one knee over the other. It would have worsened over time. To your question, yes I was a double knee replacement on same surgery. My choice but it turned out to be a life changer for me. I was 60 at the time and now 8 years later at 68 I no longer have pain. I walk uphill downhill and sideways lol. Squatting is still not easy but I try to do so several times each day. I do wish you well my friend and look forward to hearing your plans. Good luck. Keep me posted.

Just called and made appointment. Was hoping maybe someone had experienced this before.
Hi Andy. Sorry to hear about your fall. I had reached a point 8 years ago where my balance was suspect and on occasion my knee would give way. Fortunately I never fell. At age 60 I had both knees replaced at the same time. It was tough for a few weeks but it was the right decision. and life changing. Now 8 years later this past June and I continue on a good path. One thing and most important, follow the PT and trust it. It is the key for total recovery. Keep me posted and good luck.

update:

I'm still in pain which sucks, pain walking up and down stairs. and I'm barely over 90 degrees of flexibility. I still can't jog or walk long distances. so I figured let me get a 2nd opinion since my doctor said, "It takes time."... I'm tired of hearing that after 1 year. so I went to some big ortho in Pittsburgh and boy, I really did not like what he said.

he tells me that he didn't like the way my doctor did the surgery and that the only way I could get back to a decent spot was by redoing the whole thing all over again. That almost had me in tears thinking about going through all of this again. the pain, the sleepless nights, the PT....THE PAIN!!!! he's telling me that he has to cut and replace some of the tendons, so I can't get more flexibility....he started to say other stuff, but my brain zoned out thinking about doing this all over again.

I'm not sure what I am going to do. I think I'm going to let this summer play out and see if I can do some things. If not, I might have to do this again.

Andy, I'm so sorry. That really stinks.

Holy crap, that's awful to hear. I'm not sure how I would react if an ortho doc told me the first TKR was bad. I hope everything works out for you.

the only reason I would ever consider doing it again is because I am only 50 and I have a 9-year-old daughter.

OMG that’s awful. Sorry to hear.

Sorry to hear that! It sucks when you trust a doc, and then find out they didn't do exactly what you needed.

Not that you need it, but in my opinion you do whatever it is that you need to do so that you can enjoy the next 20+ years with your kid and your future grand kids.

That is terrible Andy. After 1 year you should be back to a normal active life. I had double knee replacement at 60 and never looked back after three months. My experience was exceptional but regardless you should be further along. Since you're 50 and have a 9 year old daughter you really don't have much choice. I'm speechless. Just awful. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I would be lying if I didn't say I was jealous of some of you. It's crazy for me to read how you are out golfing weeks after surgery. but I am very happy to hear it as well.

When I had my left knee replaced in 2011, the surgeon kept my natural knee cap in place. Six months later I was in more pain than before the replacement. The doctor retired right after my surgery. So, I had to have a "revision" done which is basically just another replacement. They got it right the second time.

Did you follow the medication plan to stay ahead of the pain? I was a little hesitant about the narcotics but decided the doctor knew better than me, so I took the medicine as prescribed. Glad I did. The replacement I had in January has gone really well. I am back on the golf course and my last therapy session is April 4th.

Of all the people I know who have had replacement surgery the only ones who have had serious difficulty were the ones who did not finish therapy. They also did little or no work at home.

You're young and you have your daughter. I can't imagine how much I would be missing out with my grandsons had I not the knee done. For me, I'd do it all over agin. Might have the other one done one day, ya never now. I wouldn't hesitate for it or having one redone.

Call me whenever you need to.

The at sucks man! I have had rheumatoid arthritis for 10+ years and I’m sure down road I’ll need my knees replaced too. Not looking forward to that as heard it’s a nightmare and sounds like it based on your statements too

Hang in there!

I was telling the doctor that I had done more squats in the last year than I have in my whole life....lol. i am still doing daily PT on my own

I'm glad you are doing so well.

Find a good surgeon who has loads of experience with fixing ones that have gone wrong. I've only a new hip but the two consultants where my wife and I had surgery specialise in repairing ones that didn't work first time around.

It sucks but one of the patients we met in recovery was on her 5th hip and hopefully they have sorted it out.

Good luck and at 50 I'm sure a good surgeon will sort you out

Fingers crossed for you
