The 60 and over Thread

Played 9 this morning, a good day to start out. Hit some good drives and hybrids, playing boogie golf. After 6 my back was starting to ache and I was standing up topping the ball. I think the hybrids are working well for me, hit them solid until 6. Greens were sanded and aeriated, so putting was not good.
The shorter Shafts will definitely help with Back troubles. When I feel mine Barking I put away the big "Dog" and hit the UW. Only Lose about 15-20

Monday is muni day. It was mid high 70s today, so a nice day to play. Started par, par, birdie, then a 3 putt bogey. A bogey on 7 and 9, turned in 38. Birdies on 11, 13, 15 & 16. For 32 on the back. 10 fairways, 14 GIR, 31 putts 38-32 70, shot my age for the first time this season. Thursday it gets one shot easier to shoot my age. 😎😎

Hard to play well two days in a row sometimes. Maybe I’m just wiped out from playing 18 yesterday and flying 6 hours to Northern Virginia and back, then not getting enough sleep last night. My Apple Watch kept setting off the high heart rate alarm. Really felt like crap at the end.

Well I went to the driving range Sunday instead of watching the Masters. It was pretty busy and i kind of lucked out because I set my clubs down and sat in line for a bay, and just as I did the guy hitting there got called to tee off. 3/4 of a large bucket "free". Nice. Well, he paid for it and just couldn't hit them because it was time to play. I guess he should've just bought a small bucket. Anyway...

This was my first time since early Mar and injury recovery. I hit some wedges. Alright. Then graduated to the 8i. These are premium range balls, maybe 10% less distance than a real ball, but they haven't changed the type or brand in years, so I know how far I hit them. Well, I think I lost about 12 yds carry distance across the bag. Then I hit a few drivers... yeah, it's shorter. Don't know if it'll come back. Hmmm, wondering if losing the weight I needed to lose was the distance culprit.

Why don't you give yourself a break already?! You haven't played in a month and a half and you're coming back from an injury.

Its your injury, Yardage will come back after your Brain realizes you're better. I've been dealing with 2 Herniated Disc with one torn since late 22'. Took a 6 month break and started playing a few Holes. Unable to practice, found the long Clubs were drastically short. Between pain and Brain telling me to stand up to save Back sucked. I'm up to 13-15 Holes now and am hitting Driver a little further now at 230-240.
Keep at it, your distance will come back... Promise.

I would also avoid re-injuring yourself trying to get your driver distance back.

Due to lingering issues from my stroke I couldn't feel the bottom of my right foot. That makes it hard to get good distance!
I worked on ball striking and then wedges, so I didn't do much with driver last year.

I've been working on driver over the past month at the end of winter and found I can effectively use a long backswing to generate a lot of speed with good lateral dispersion!

Good advice. For example, I haven't played in five months, so I need to take that into account when I finally do play.

Looks like I may have found the right thread. Thanks @Carolina Golfer for giving the directions. I’m nursing a shoulder injury from skiing. Can’t swing a club right now. I had the surgery on the same shoulder (biceps, labrum and rotator cuff tears) in ‘21 and was just starting to get my distance back last year. I’m finding that recovery time is getting longer and longer, which is incredibly frustrating. My doc says to slow down, but I worked my whole life so that I can play now. Who wants to slow down when you have all this free time?

Exactly! I hope you feel better soon, however in the interim maybe you can do some chipping and putting? That's what I do when I am unable to play due to injury.
Thanks. I putt quite a bit. I have one of those Perfect Practice putting matts in a spare bedroom that I’m wearing out. I enjoy my setup in the backyard - a Spornia SPG8 net, but the weather hasn’t been very cooperative. And I have to get past the mental hurdle that I can only chip. I probably pushed things too hard a couple of days ago, trying to get to where I couldn’t swing. Did some light lifting to try to stretch out the tightness and now I’m back to an ice pack. The whole 1 step forward, 2 steps back kinda thing.

Yes, it sucks when you realize that you can't hit it as far. It is so easy to push yourself to swing harder, even when you know that won't help!
But, in early January I had a low score that was just one off my personal best! Even without the distance I had before!
Fairways and greens. Boring golf by pitching it back onto the fairway. Accuracy instead of distance.

Hopefully, my golf season will start this weekend. Although the temperature has been in the 60s the past couple of days, I'm busy at work this week. Starting tomorrow it's going to be cloudy, colder and probably wet for a few days. That's been Spring around here the past few years. In any event, the range at my club is open. I'm planning on hitting some balls this weekend and maybe get out on the course if it's open and not too wet.

I forget that the northeast has had quite a bit more precipitation than the Mitten. Our late winter and spring have been wonderful. I tend to assume whatever we get moves east. The reality is you guys also get a lot of weather moving up the Atlantic coast that we miss. Let's hope you dry out soon.

Once we get through tomorrow it looks ok. But it should be much warmer than this at this time of year. Those highs in the low 50s late next week are definitely unseasonable.

The course I play is close to a lake and already wet to begin with. 8 inches of rain in March and another three inches already in April!
I'm busy working on the yard and my golf swing instead of heading out to the course as I know it will be really wet!
Did the first mow, dug the broadcast spreader out of the garage, and fertilized the lawn yesterday!

I got back home to Myrtle Beach this morning. I‘ve only played 3x in the last 6 weeks due to family and back issues, but I’m hoping that’s all behind me now. I’m going to head to the range tomorrow and Friday, then play Saturday.
Next week I’ll be in full golf mode again, playing every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday with two or three Monday tournaments mixed in each month through September.
It’s been a rough stretch (actually since November) but knock on wood, I’m ready to get this party started.

Hi All,

New to this thread, but good to be with other 60 plus golfers. I’m in the UK, play to single figures, and try to get out twice a week with friends. We’ve had a really wet spring here; I reckon we’ve lost 6 to 8 weeks proper golf because of wet and waterlogged holes. At last it’s starting to dry out. I’ve been trying a Ping G425 max I’ve recently bought, replacing an old Ping i15. Very different clubs, as you’d expect. Could do with some dry fairways to make some comparisons between the two!

Welcome to the 60 and over thread, good people here and in THP.

League match #3 tonight, post knee outage. Wish me luck!

Played 9 this morning, not too good until I realized if I just get up there and hit the ball it goes straight and good distance for me. Finally hit my new 4 hybrid, I love it. Got 160 out of it, which is what I was looking for in distance. Boogie first hole and then a snowman on 2, on three a double and then on 4 I got up and just hit the ball. Par on the next two holes and then back to boogie golf. I'm really happy with my game right now.
