Not a picture, but I was looking through my Google drive and came across this video I shot earlier this year whilst working in an elevator machine room. I'm guessing most people have never seen the equipment that actually moves the cab up and down, and it's actually surprisingly simple. From what I could tell by watching it, the DC motor is actually what starts and stops the movement of the cab; the braking mechanism that cycles on and off is merely there to keep the cab from moving once it has come to a stop, as people and objects are moved in and out. I found it quite interesting that in today's world of electronics and microprocessors they still use four simple lever micro-switches to tell the controller if the brake is on or off.
