Gasman, they have a few programs out there that help, but you are right. None of them work all that well.

I had one of the old programs on my old laptop and they are just kind of cheesy. But thats the only problem I have really had with Mac, and its not really a problem at all.

Gasman,
I grew up on PC's, then switched to Macs, and am now back to PCs. Both do just about everything I would ask them to do. Some software is just not available for Macs, but not enough to keep me away. My issue has and always will be cost and the open network. The cost factor just does not add up between the two.

I just read an article (I will find it) about the IPhone (which I had and hated) compared to the Android OS program. They talk about the Open Source that Android is and how developers are flocking to it 40x the amount that flocked to the IPhone. In the end, that only benefits the consumer.

Blackberry is coming out with an official MAc app early this upcoming year.

I'm looking at it like this...Macs run cleaner, less to worry about, and are optimized for fun and easy phot/video/music editing.

you can run windows on a Mac now if you want to spend the extra money on a Windows OS license. (research "BootCamp").

I did that and I know tons of people had no issues, but my Mac ran SOOO SLOW.

you need a lot of memory(RAM) if you boot into Vista. it's a resource hog. even on a PC, Vista needs 2 gigs to just be "happy".

"MacBooks: The notebook for all platforms"

Here is an article reviewing the new macbook & macbook pro.

Here is a little teaser, "When it comes to a notebook computer with power that rivals a desktop and portable convenience that can do just about anything on any operating system platform, I have one suggestion that I truly believe fits everyone: Get a Mac."

No, the site isn't a Mac users site. It's freep.com

As a user of both in my life, and I am not one side or another. But a reader emailed this site in and said that it chose PC over Mac. I just had to check it out....

Please keep in mind that there is strong profanity on this site and it should not be seen by children under the age of 18

Thanks JB. Just had a look at it. Was that guy on angry pills or something?? Looks like a new unabomber in the making.

I'm a PC user (mainly because I code .NET applications 8 hours a day). I used to be a huge Mac fan and still think they are far superior Graphic Design/Layout machines. That said, you're paying a premium with just about every Mac model that I can't justify.

If you go PC, I still recommend XP Professional over Vista, but most companies preloading an OS only have Vista these days (Dell may still preload XP ... they did a few months back).

I have to admit, I am tired of hearing "it just works" (an Apple advertising line) when I ask someone to explain why they like Macs over PCs, but they can't explain WHY "it just works."

I've never used a Mac and I'm honestly looking for an explanation of why Apple people think it's superior to a PC because I'm going to need a new laptop in the next year.

And although I find the Mac vs. PC commercials humorous, they are pretty bitter, and not just a little hypocritical.

We are just talking about computers after all.

I think for me, and considering my minimal use of my macbook, is the fact that getting somewhere on the computer or doing something is inheritingly silly easy. I literally stumble around when I'm trying to fiugre something out, only to find out it is exactly how/where it should be. So used to in's and outs, paths with PC through the years sorta makes the Mac difficult at first, but when you think about "how" something should be, it is truly better.
I haven't messed with Vista yet (or Mojave!).

That website is rad, im a Mac guy, but everything on there is so true.

I don't know - I really can't stand Mac's...just too...i don't even know - annoying. I hate Vista though.

Harry, as always, I love your posts. I understand what you're asking but perhaps its a question that doesn't really need to be asked (no offence intended). After being with PCs a number of years, I moved over to a mac & I love it. It works & it does work well. I don't question why it works well, much like I don't question why my Miele front loading washing machine works better than the long forgotten brand of top loader I used to have, or why any other product I have chosen works better than its predecessor. I'm just happy that it has proved better. But that's just my opinion. Others may have an opposite view to mine and I respect and welcome those views.

I'd much prefer this thread to be "Mac and PC" rather than "Mac or PC" because perhaps some entrenched and polarised views are unnecessary. The point being that people are free to choose a Mac, a PC, or both; nobody should take offence at another's personal choice if one is chosen over the other. You were spot on when you said that "[w]e are just talking about computers after all".

Yes, Macs seem to be more expensive than PCs as a general rule but there's always good deals to be had. Retail is hurting at the moment in my neck of the woods. Someone close to me just bought a new Macbook and accessories yesterday at below cost.

If you're after some info on a new PC laptop, the article I posted above had the author's recommendations about new laptops, which I have pasted immediately below. The author gave a Lenovo model the most favourable mention. Hope you find it a helpful. Peace to all, Mac & PC users alike!!

By the way, it's my birthday today. "Happy Birthday to me ...."

Brad,
OVer here, Macs do not go on sale. And PC notebooks can be had for about $300-$500 with the same specs as a Mac that costs $1200

Was talking to the Mac person in Best Buy today.I like the fact Mac's are immune to viruses and crap.Seems like a great feature.
Wanted to buy one for the wife, but she stated she didn't care for them. She didn't care for their icon layout and thought it was harder to use.

Oh well,Guess I get to continue to hear her biatch about how crappy her PC is working.

One thing to note BL. Do not fool yourself, Mac's are NOT immune to viruses. I have had one on my Mac that was a real doozie. Just less viruses are written for a computer that less than 10% of the population uses.

What do you mean by Icon Layout? My Mac has no icons other than the bottom of the screen in the dock. However my Windows machine has icons all over it. Curious.

I know nothing about mac's and viruses, only what the person said.

She didn't go into details about the icons.I'll guess how all the icons are on the bottom and you have to scroll through them vs just having them sit in your order of choice on the PC's desktop

Its weird getting used to them but once you do they are great.

I really don't run other software that much, so that shouldn't be a concern. MY concern of a total switch to Mac and not having a personal PC is...I love Microsoft office, but for nothing more than Word and Powerpoint for grad work. Will running those on a Mac be good enough you think?

Per personal use: music, plan on home video simple editing, and internet.

Sounds like I just typed myself into an iMac.

I've been with Mac since 85 for personal use. System 7. I now have an older G4 733 with 500 mb of ram. Tiger OS. I have been on the net for all these years and have never gotten one virus. The graphics and video and audio software have always been a friend to Mac. Adobe being the best thing that ever happened. I use it now to record music. I put an M Audio Delta 44 sound card in it for $149 and got Cuebase Le for the software. I have run as many as 16 tracks of drums and guitars and piano through the card and software with zero latency. The productions are first rate and this machine is old and obsolete. It runs Office with no problem but I have an older version installed. I only use Excel and Word. If you like games and cheap software forget about it. PC rules in software choices. Macs cost way more than they should but if you are looking for a DAW you can't beat the Mac. Graphic artist, musicians and 3D developers love them. Most people don't need that and the PC works fine for the regular Joe and the business world at waaaay less money. PC's will work for music production but one thing I can't overlook is that the same PC specs to my old Mac would never do the job. But I paid for it through the nose. My Mac has everything I need. Everything I have works great for music production so I have officially climbed off that computer upgrade treadmill.:thumb:

But they are WAY overpriced. I can get a comparable PC for 50% less (maybe more than that) than the price of the MacBook Pro.

And I keep hearing how much better Mac OS is, but no one can really articulate why.

QFT! Admitedly I don't need/know much about computing, but IMO they tack on an awful lot more for a color change and 1gb more ram etc........

Also PC's still offer more actual "customization" (i.e.-more drive options, hd's, screens etc) with custom, tailored for me ground up laptop builds, rather than just cosmetic color changes and screen sizes.

Plus if I was still into PC gaming then it would be obvious, more so that I do not play WoW but stuff like Crysis etc.........

I run both a Mac and a PC at home was well as various flavours of Linux when I'm bored. I've never gotten a virus on the PC in the last bunch of years but that's because I practice safe surfing:angel:.

I do like both and honestly don't care which I use. I'm kind choked that Snow Leopard does not support my Konica Minolta printer which meant I had to downgrade back to Leopard.
