Perry to play British Open despite mother's cancer - Golf - Yahoo! Sports

Kenny Perry has decided to play in the British Open next week after meeting with doctors for his mother, who is dying of blood cancer.

Perry was criticized last year when he did not go to golf’s oldest championship, sticking to his commitment to play in Milwaukee and to his goal of making the Ryder Cup team for the competition held in his native Kentucky.

He had planned all along to play this British Open, which starts next week at Turnberry in Scotland. Perry had second thoughts, however, when doctors put his mother in hospice. She has been suffering from multiple myeloma.

“Kenny had to wait to see what that meant,” his agent, Alan Bullington, said Monday. “He didn’t know if that meant she had a month, a week, a year. He met with doctors, and she was stable enough that he felt comfortable leaving for a week.”

Perry has been dealing with several family health issues during his amazing run late in his career. Along with his mother’s cancer, his father had two stents put in his heart during the offseason last year and lost 20 pounds, although he is doing better.

His wife’s mother broke her knee and two vertebrae during a fall, and Perry chose to remodel his home in Franklin, Ky., with wheelchair ramps so they could look after her.

Perry turns 49 next month, yet he already has two victories this year and was runner-up at the Masters, where he lost a two-shot lead with two holes to play and Angel Cabrera won in a playoff.

He won three times last year, qualified for the Ryder Cup team and won his singles match before a home crowd.

Perry is the defending champion at the John Deere Classic this week, then will fly to Scotland with his 23-year-old son and Bullington. His son, Justin, played college golf at Western Kentucky.

im glad he has chosen to play...he is definitely one of my favorite players to watch on tv

That had to be a tough decision for him to make, but I'm sure he consulted with his mother before making his decision. Unfortunately, if she dies while he's away, someone in the media will criticize him.

I am a huge Kenny Perry fan and am glad he is playing. If Kenny’s character is as strong as I believe it is this is not a decision he would have taken lightly.

Im sure he wouldnt have play in The Open unless the doctor was pretty confident that his mother is going to hang until after this weekend.
I respect KP for putting family before golf.

I respect him too, however I must ask this question. Why did Phil get blasted for doing the same thing yet Kenny gets praised for it?

I think that is a good point JB. I disagree with some of the comments that were made about Phil. All I can say is that prayers are in order for both Phil’s and Kenny’s families.

Agreed AHH.

I think there were a couple of reasons for that, but to put it bluntly - Kenny Perry's mother is old, has terminal cancer and is expected to die anyway.

LOL. Good point. There are those who will blast Phil for anything though. He has his family out there too much one minute, then he's not being attentive enough the next. He can't win. I'm sure they're fairly confident that she'll be around for awhile or KP wouldn't go.

The public always feels that these people have to be out there. People who criticize Phil are spineless, he doesn't owe the public anything right now, he has put himself out there for better or worse many times! I hope everything goes well for him so he can get back out there soon, and he can take all the time he needs to get there!!

i think sometimes the players want to play in these situations, because it helps take their mind off things because they have been stressed for so long...also they can use it as inspiration

Im not saying I agree, but it has to be because Phil released a statement saying he was out of golf indefinitely and came back a few weeks later. I dont think these guys owe us any explanation for their personal lives.
