So, I need some car advice.

My car is leaking transmission fluid. I took it to a local mechanic who I trust and he said that the speed sensor is where the leak is coming from.

Some people have said that I should only get the transmission worked on by a "specialist" or the dealership and not my local mechanic. Is that true, is the transmission really a specialty? Can anyone give me a round about price that they think this would cost?

I totally need to find a guy in my life who knows about cars so I don't have to deal with this! Thanks for any help you can give me!

It depends what kind of car it is but I would trust your local guy to do this. On most cars it almost like changing a spark plug.

I concur.

Transmission shops are like medical specialists, your neighborhood mechanic is like a family doctor. If your mechanic cannot do the job he should have sense enough to refer you to the transmission shop. It is not a decision you should have to make. If he thinks he can do it then he probably can.

I would agree with the guys above. Pjcedog's analogy is pretty spot-on. No idea what the cost would be for the repair though.

I cant see any way he could screw something up by changing out the sensor and seeing if thats the fix. It doesnt take a transmission specialist to trace down a fluid leak though, thats for sure. As far as I am concerned you only need a transmissions specialist if something goes wrong on the inside.

My one experience with a transmission shop was very expensive. I guess specialists can charge more. Doesn't mean they are worth more. I always defer to my local repair shop if it is something I can't do myself.

I'll agree with everyone else and say your local guy can probably take care of the problem.

Please send additional information and pictures to me and we might be able to make arrangements.

Soxy- what's the year and make of your car? I'll ask a mechanic friend of mine what he thinks the est. cost will be. also, I'd almost always rather go to a local guy rather than the dealership or specialist IMO

My car is 10 years old so I no longer go to the dealer - the cost is too high, but I go to a mechanic that only works on BMW's and Mercedes with a Porsche thrown in every so often. Cars have become so specialized that I'm not comfortable with the local mechanic who works on all makes and models. How can they possibly know the intricacies of all of them.

I agree with the others - changing a speed sensor (either input or output) would be easy. They're externally mounted on the transmission so it doesn't require a transmission specialist to replace.

If you recall, she's already posted a photo of the back bumper. Remember? The trunk was slightly ajar.

Oh yeah I forgot about that. I'll have to go back and review that picture. Maybe I can be of some assistance.

If its a mechanic whom you know you can trust and he thinks he can do the job, I say let him handle it.
There are some transmission issues where you would want a specialist, but if its just leaking from a sensor; thats something that anyone could fix.

Thanks, that would be great. I have a Nissan Pathfinder, 2004.

I was waiting for that! Hahaha!

Changing the VSS shouldn't require a specialist, it's a simple part, and a simple fix.
